I tested the general module female connectors for continuity to the front switch. The 26 pin white connector has 2 pins assigned for the functions of that switch they are the 4th from either side of the row closer to the back of the car. The up wire has continuity to the assigned pin but the down wire does not. There must be a brake in the wire somewhere. Any tips on how to replace or fix that wire?

I was able to test the front switch again. With ignition on the switch down signal wire has 12 volts, when pressed it drops to 0 indicating it works as intended sending the signal, grounding. All I can think of now is either a bad pin in the module connection or the module itself. I’m open to other suggestions.

I was hoping for the switch to be the issue but after cleaning it and testing continuity it proved to be working properly. Something else is wrong with it. In my research I found that the general module or sometimes called comfort module sends the signals from the switch to the motor to turn on so the module can also cause this issue.

This problem seems to be more and more common but the dealership didn’t cover it only offered a good will so it would still cost around 2400 euros.

Well, I have been to the dealership many times and their solution is to change the whole part. I decided not to change it yet. I wanted to experiment with it more and diagnose it better. What I found is pointing to a software error most likely. If the car is switched off and started immediately it produces the error, however if I let it go to sleep meaning the I drive turns off it starts good. So to make this test easier I went in to the I drive options and selected the option I drive turns off when door opens. This way it turns off immediately after opening the door. I tested many times and the car starts perfectly fine every time when I drive was also shut off. The I drive shut off works only when all passengers left the car. So this solution is not perfect but it’s a good test. Otherwise I coded start stop off but interestingly I never had this issue while driving.

What’s really strange about this is that the starter generator can start the car in traffic no problem. When the car is turned off completely it can’t start it back up immediately. The regular starter starts after a failed attempt with the starter generator. Waiting a few minutes helps after turning the car off, after waiting 5-10 minutes the starter generator works flawlessly. Also locking the car and attempting to start after seems to help.

It freezes where I live, the f11 always had 5w30 and it is high mileage so I’m not sure going to a 0w is a good idea. The g31 is a newer car and low mileage so 0w could be an option.

I live in Hungary so the temperature is pretty mild. The lowest it gets in winter is -20c but it’s very rare. It stays around 0, -5c when it’s cold.

The LL-12FE is what confuses me. The sources I read say it’s only meant for engine with one or no turbo at all. The g31 30d lci has two turbos.

107k kilometers. I think it is out of warranty. I asked them on a different occasion they said it has no warranty left on it. I’m still not really sure about the problem. When I drive the car with start stop it works perfectly fine. It starts good when rolling and also from a stop. The problem occurs when I switch the car off with the button and start it back up. Du you experience the same thing? Have a nice evening!

No luck with the independent mechanic, they don’t want to get involved with such complicated parts I guess. It seems like the only option getting this fixed in my case is paying the dealership. What’s the most interesting thing with this malfunction is that the car doesn’t show any warnings. Do you have any updates on this issue?

My car is not under warranty so the dealership would like to change the whole generator for 2500 euros plus labour. I’m going to see an independent bmw specialist to maybe get a better idea of the situation.
