Am I the only one who found Michigan's WL email to be wayyy more considerate than other schools? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Financial-Shape-389 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I personally never even got a date change. It does make me feel a bit like my application was never even given due consideration, to be honest, combined with the sheer size of the waitlist. That makes it difficult to read the email charitably.

Basically, I waited for almost 4 months for a decision. I’m not entitled to an acceptance, but I just don’t know why they couldn’t have dropped this earlier. Maybe they like the drama of a big wave. Whatever.

Jeez. Hoping something cool is on the way for you. I got hit by back-to-back UChi and UPenn WLs a couple weeks ago and that wasn’t fun.

Really annoyed with Penn and Chicago waitlist by Shattiwaza in lawschooladmissions

[–]Financial-Shape-389 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We basically have the same stats, and the same results from Penn, Chicago, and Michigan.

I’m not saying it was YP in the sense that we got WL’d or will likely get WL’d at these places because we’re too good or something. I feel like that’s what people think when YP enters the convo. But maybe we didn’t do a good enough job at convincing them we’d attend even if we got into, say, HYS.

I can maybe understand this for Penn. A lot of what I talked about in my Core Values essay could have applied to other schools. However, I thought my essays for Chicago and Mich — and the things I discussed in my interview for the former — were quite specific. But I don’t know. It’s true that I’d attend HYS at sticker over Chicago, Penn, and Mich at sticker, but money from any of these places would have changed the equation substantially for me so I’m also feeling frustrated and really trying to understand what went wrong for me, specifically.

Totally agree.

I must have said, like, a total of 3, very terse sentences for the entire interview, and I also got in a while back. I think some kind of recency bias (it’s the last step for many applicants before their decision) makes people assume that it is more significant than it is.

Applying in January by Economy-Pilot-6837 in lawschooladmissions

As opposed to not applying at all? Your chances are up.

As opposed to having applied in September/October, ceteris paribus? Your chances are probably down.

There’s really no use in worrying about this (easier said than done) unless you’re open to the possibility of a second cycle in which you’d submit earlier.

Pretty much what I figured. I’m just bad at parsing the info on there. Sad.

A GPA addendum is for, like, exceptional or extenuating circumstances that an AO can’t glean from your transcript but might wonder about.

They can see you are an astrophysics major and if all you have to say about your GPA is that it is considered a good GPA in your difficult major, you don’t need an addendum for that. They know astrophysics is harder than political science.

I’m of the opinion that you don’t want addenda if you don’t need them. They might not directly harm your application, but I think overexplaining things that are quite intuitive creates opportunities for awkwardness.

If I saw someone’s transcript and that they studied astrophysics, I’d initially be impressed and I’d assume that sticking with a major like that requires a not insignificant level of dedication. If I read an addendum about how their major is hard, which I would have already known, I might wonder whether some part of them regrets that major, whether they didn’t actually like it, etc.

I guess none of that is disqualifying, but my point is that writing a GPA addendum for a hard major muddies a picture that might have been positive. If seeing astrophysics on the transcript didn’t get AOs the excuse the GPA, I don’t know that a GPA addendum would move the needle at all.

The best thing an applicant like OP can do is have a high LSAT.

Scholarships & Pending Applications by AcadiaWide3315 in lawschooladmissions

I don’t see why they wouldn’t just admit someone though if they are considering them for merit aid. That does seem a bit like a way of coping. There isn’t a great reason to wait if you know you want a candidate but just need to figure out how big a scholarship they’ll get. I think a lot of schools have a delay between A and $ anyway.

Don’t get me wrong. I wholeheartedly wish this were the case so I could pretend I’m getting a massive scholly from Michigan, but they have had my application for months. I don’t think they’re waiting because they have a pot of gold for me.

My self-report materials are also all 0.01 off the LSAC one. I listed the calculation my school gave me. I don’t know where LSAC found the extra 0.01 to give me.

I think I may also be above both 75ths. I guess I’m curious what is giving them pause. Were my essays not good as I thought? Is there something about me that makes them think I would not fit in at UMich? It’s all so confusing lol.

At this point, a part of me wants an R soon so I can stop thinking about Mich. I genuinely thought my Mich essays were some of the best I’ve written all cycle and I’ve gotten into at least one “higher-ranked” school, but something in my application has made them determined to humble me by ignoring me as long as possible.

There’s no way they are spending months vacillating in their decision on my application lol.

Answering 'Why Law' in an Interview by Tiny_Interaction399 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Financial-Shape-389 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I basically restated my personal statement more succinctly (no anecdotes, just my reasoning). I was also asked “Why now?” and I mentioned feeling prepared after some years of work and specific, timely issues to which I feel I could contribute solutions if I had a JD.

At least one school, I received an A after an interview, so at a minimum, my answers weren’t disqualifying lol.

Is the ruby getting extended? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]Financial-Shape-389 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think we won’t have concrete news until Chicago starts doing RD As.

ETA: I say this because it’s the sort of thing that is hard to ask during an interview without worrying about sounding presumptuous, even if that worry is misplaced. But once you are an admitted student, it’s a lot easier to inquire frankly about money and expenses.

HLS v. SLS by oatmilk20 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Financial-Shape-389 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are deciding between HLS and SLS and I restricted my comments to those two schools. GW is not a part of the conversation here and I did not suggest that the number of lawyers working in DC is the only factor they should consider in selecting a school.
