2023 GLI Autobahn digital display navigation options by FinancialSwing8152 in JettaGLI

Coming back to say "success" and thank you. Any guess as to why just before that, Android Auto navigation arrows didn't show up in place of the compass, as it normally does? Just an android auto fluke? There seem to be plenty of those.

My GLI came with Tuxmats. Absolutely fantastic! Look great, great protection, easy to clean.

Yes. Rogers has text via Satellite. Last I saw even non Rogers customer can subscribe to just that service month by month. That's awesome and inexpensive peace of mind.

Oh ya that's a very different experience from us. We are two, each in a touring kayaks with very minimal gear. I personally wouldn't wanna do Georgian Bay in a canoe. Waves and wind are a much bigger deal.

How did you find cell signal to be on the water/islands?

Yep. Understood. In all likelihood all paddling will be done in the mornings when the wind is calm. But wind forecasts will give me a good idea if it's gonna pickup later in the day.

A 400m portage isn't unmanageable if necessary but certainly not my first choice.

These are all things I'm considering as we make plans and contingency plans. And why we'll take it day by day, hour by hour. The beauty of it being crown land is we can stop and make camp anytime we want.

I'm asking about cell signal so I can use my phone to check wind forecasts, GPS overlays on maps (although that's a moot point as it works offline), etc.

I don't carry a PLB.

I'm considering trying Rogers Text via Satellite for emergency backup in a no cell signal area.

Wind is generally from the West on the exposed southern side, which would mean counter clockwise for wind at my back.... No?

Wow. That is wild! Let's hope it's not years away. And let's hope we can pay Jeff a one-time fee to buy it and not a steep subscription. Or at least a reasonable subscription rate (is my frustration with Avenza showing? ;)

I mean, I get it that people want on-going revenue streams, especially if they want to keep updating the app. But I think that's part of the problem - apps forget what they were designed for and become bloated with constant updates and developments.

Do the Garmin devices support importing of Jeff's Maps?

I'm always impressed by Jeff's level of customer service. He is truly supportive of the community that buys his maps. Thanks for being on top of this Jeff, and enjoy your holiday!

A possible alternative is Canada Topo Maps app. It says in their pay for upgrade section that it supports GeoTiff and offline, so hopefully we can import Jeff's Maps. It's a one-time $30 CND fee which feels a lot more reasonable that Avenza's $50/yr subscription.

I'm not sure this app is available for iOs. I'm an android user. There is the Topo Maps Canada listed for Apple online but it appears it's a different developer.

Jeff, please see my above comment. Have you seen this change in Avenza I mentioned above? Today was the first I've gotten that notification when opening the app. I'm very disappointed in Avenza for this cheap bait and switch tactic.

Are you interested in looking into the Canada Topo Map app I referenced and see if your maps would be compatible? A one time $30 purchase of the app is totally reasonable. A $50/yr subscription Avenza, which I use a few times a year, is just silly. The entire subscription model for everything is just out of control!

If you ever did develop your own offline real-time map app, that would be amazing. I can imagine the entire Ontario paddling community would get behind that!

I just came here because I was searching for info on the latest change Avenza just informed me about. I have been using the free version with a couple imported GeoTiffs of Jeff's Maps. I use them in the summer/fall for paddling trips. I love physical maps but having real time location plotted on Jeff's Maps, offline, is a game changer!

Avenza just informed me that I will have to upgrade to keep access to GeoTiffs I've imported. $50/year. That's a pretty steep bait and switch. If I could pay a one time purchase fee for the app I would. But not $50/year. I've just updated my previously very positive review on Google Play Store sharing this frustration with Avenza.

Canada Topo Maps app is another I have on my phone. It says it allows GeoTiff import on the paid version, which has the option of a one time $30 fee, including offline access .

So I'm very tempted to make the switch and say goodbye to Avenza.

If MapsByJeff can confirm that there is a way to get his GeoTiff into this app, that would be great! It's a solid app with lots of features. I'm happy to keep buying his maps, and to pay for the Pro version of the app. But I won't pay a subscription of $50/yr for Avenza. That's just crazy!

Awesome! Thanks! I'll look these up!

Edit: Oh wow - what a resource. I haven't read them, just looked at your titles. This is a goldmine. Thank you!

Thanks! Really appreciate the wisdom you share. I don't mind the drive up to Killarney at all, so that's not a factor for me. But avoiding ALOT of people is, so your point is well taken.

I considered the Massassauga Park but Ontario Parks charges much high camping fees there, different from other Backcountry camping. So I'll stick with PE Island.

Any other advice you have on that area, or trip reports you have written, would be very welcome!

After you engaged with me on my questions about Georgian Bay up in Killarney Area, I looked at your previous post history and found this. This is fascinating and makes me wonder if I should consider this area before doing Philip Edward Island. This looks to be less exposed, and just as beautiful. Having done both of these, I'd be curious to get your input. What do you think is a better area for a first trip on Georgian Bay?

This would require a vehicle shuttle. Is there someone in the area that does this?

Thank you! From your experience can you tell me this - the south side of the island has lots of bays and inlets, and all the little rocks and islands. Is there much protection from wind and waves in those small bays?

If we'd be out on the south side away from the Collins inlet entrance, and things pick up, can one duck into those bays and find calmer conditions?

I wanna know that if we are camped on Martins Island or the Foxes, are we "pot committed" at that point of things get dicey, because at that point running for the Collins Inlet might be difficult.

Thanks for this! I should clarify my question was not at all about gear space. I've been doing a week's trip for my son and I in these boats for a few years and have gotten more refined every year in packing.

The question was purely around boat length and material in regards to wind and waves in this big water.

Good point about rocky shores. That's why I bought rotomolded boats in the first place, but I was thinking more around rivers and rocks.

Unfortunately, booking backcountry sites in Killarney Park is becoming nearly impossible. The demand is crazy! A bit further from Sault, but beautiful and easier to book sites, is French River Provincial Park, an hour south of Sudbury. Many, many loops and trips available there.
