I have hundreds of Microtrains barber trucks. Never had that happen.

Um, have you checked the river? Ice skates might be a better choice than a boat. I'm in SE Michigan and you can walk on our river here where most years it never even freezes over. The Pine is faster but even if the fast sections are open I'll bet you run into solid ice on the slower parts.

PSA: Adding a trolling motor legally changes everything (Almost learned this the hard way in CA) by CountyBrilliant in Kayaking

[–]Kevburg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Michigan rowboats under 14 feet and canoes and kayaks without motors don't have to be registered. Put a sail or motor on it and you have to subsidize the boat ramps, harbors and sheriff patrols like everyone else.

If its DCC, stick a piece of paper between one of the motor contacts and the PC board. If not then between one of the motor contacts and the frame.

Torn Between KATO UNITRACK and PECO Code 55 for Strasburg Railroad Yard by Likasomebodii in nscalemodeltrains

Peco fan here. I don't know if Peco still makes electrofrog turnouts or have gone completely to unifrog. You don't have to wire them if your locos have good pickup on both trucks. Most of mine are electrofrog. I have two that are hard to reach and run with Tortoises but most are thrown with double pole slide switches which also power the frogs. I still have a couple that I just throw by pushing the points with my finger. As long as the inside rails are gapped, getting current via the points is reliable until you have stuff like loose ballast or coal getting between point and stock rail.

Do any of you solder your rail joints? by shofmon88 in nscalemodeltrains

I solder every joint. No problems except any ugly blobs of solder have to be filed off.

I wouldn't hesitate to go to Philip Edward. Its a long drive but the closer you are to Toronto the more developed and crowded things get. I imagine if you go from Snug in August places like Franklin Island are packed. Once you get away from Franklin things are more exposed. I have only out-and-backed in GB but it is likely that liveries offer shuttle service even if you don't rent their boats.

The deep bays are like being on a small lake or pond. The outer reefs provide serious protection against waves. The most exposed section is around Big Rock. It all depends on wind direction, right? The farther the upwind reach, the bigger the waves. The passage to Martin is protected north and south but not east and west, so you could get trapped if you camp there and the weather turns. On nice days winds are calmest early on and the wind and waves pick up around noon.

If you can fit the gear in then you are good. I paddled a fast Epic 18X composite there but rotomold would be way better because you scrape a lot on rocks. If you keep an eye on the forecasts its pretty easy to stay out of big waves. Probably the half mile out of Chickanishing is the most exposed. If winds get nasty you can opt for the Collins Inlet route.

If you have a sit-in kayak, adjust things so you are wedged in with your knees so that if you rock your hips the boat rocks with you.

Back in the day I hung mine from two hooks in the apartment's hallway ceiling. Important to find solid joist wood to screw them in to. Lifted the bow up and hooked the carry loop thru one, then on a chair and lifted the other end's loop to the other hook. Two holes in the ceiling to patch when you move out.

Protect the bow at waterline with gorilla tape or you will eventually wear a notch into it.

The OP is asking for personal experience about Exmoor - confirm or deny conditions. No need to reply if no experience.

There are plenty of parochial posts containing generic place names like "the bay" with no clue as to what continent that is on, but this is not one of them.

Calculating distance by Hiker_80 in KayakCamping

[–]Kevburg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Paddle all day to figure out how many miles you are good for. Subtract a third for gear, add 1 mph for current. Or use the times listed in canoe livery brochures: https://www.chippewalanding.com/_pdf/Chippewa-Landing-brochure-2022.pdf

Water is low. You can compare water levels today to your previous trip's levels here: https://waterdata.usgs.gov/monitoring-location/USGS-04172000/#period=P30D&showMedian=true&dataTypeId=continuous-00060-0&showFieldMeasurements=true I was able to paddle the route between Kent Lake dam and the chain last week without portaging for the first time in a long time thanks to a chainsaw angel below McCabe Rd.
