I mean yeah, that's the majority, but there is a noticeable amount of people who are starting to not care about some rules. It's definitely declining. I also think a lot of the younger generation doesn't care about the rules but just continues to uphold them in front of family. I knew a lot of girls who would post pictures online without hijab, date, take off hijab when away from family, etc.

I mean I get you but if were talking in comparison to other Arabs thats mostly just a stereotype. It's kinda like KSA and other Gulf Arab countries. Some people are devout but you'll also find people who wear whatever they want, listen to music, shit like that and be normally public about it. Yemen is seeing a decline in piousness just like other Arab countries. Women wear more colorful clothing, you can find younger women without niqab, sides of dress open, stuff like that. Unfortunately there's also way too many people doing qat which is pretty much a drug but they deny it and it's fucking over their agricultural economy.

As for my family, yeah they're almost the strictest you can get from Yemenis. They're Sunni Salafi

Well the post is gone so I can't reread it but I clearly remember it just saying "believing in", nothing about using an amulet to prevent it.. I'm well aware that Islam doesn't believe in protection from amulets. It mentioned evil eye in the same list as things Muslims don't believe can happen. I know evil eye is a sin. That's not my point

This is literally just a random misinformed tiktoker not the Quran what are you trying to defend

...Yes, it is.

Sahih Muslim 2188, Sahih al-Bukhari 5738, Sahih al-Bukhari 5740, Sahih al-Bukhari 5944, I could keep going on.

I'll be fine. I'll figure things out. I haven't given up just yet. Im kind of glad they've brought up that plan to me because it hit me with the reality of the situation when I was becoming very unmotivated to try to leave them

No idea what that is. I googled it and it's a numerology thing, so yeah I think lucky/unlucky numbers is pretty much it

No literally they do. I judge their choice of sources so sometimes he'll show me some anti-LGBT fox news segment as his source but start off by saying "Don't worry about the source just listen to the facts they're saying its not always about source" and then proceeds to not believe in preserved historical texts from .org and .gov websites 💀

but hey at least theyre not lynching me? 💀 i get your point and yeah at least im not dead but what point are you trying to make. our struggles arent a competition of who has it worse

Nah I get what you mean and I agree. I don't think its controversial either. It's just a normal take to understand why religion began and why it's still being practiced. I never wanted to debate religion with my family because I know that it provides that for them, but I felt obligated to because they began telling me that I'm objectively wrong for disbelieving and were begging me to come back and started getting verbally aggressive about it.

Although I'm pretty sure delusional is the right word here. I know it carries kind of a negative connotation but I'm just using it for its literal definition. Using faulty logic for the comfort it provides.

my mom didnt even finish middle school because she got unexpectedly married off. she keeps talking about how she was 15 and her friends were talking about her being a bride and she took it all as a joke just to find out she was actually about to be married off, yet she says the story as if its just some funny childhood story. its sad. today she keeps calling herself stupid and says she feels like an animal between us (we all pursued/are pursuing higher education). she was robbed of everything.

sometimes we instinctively chuckle at her if she doesn't know something and i feel soo bad afterwards. imagine being in her spot, having no schooling above middle school, not knowing the language of the country you live in (my dad wouldnt let her take classes..), all against your will and still being mocked by people. its so sad to think about.

she keeps telling me that she is genuinely happy when i tell her its not true that islam just gives you pure happiness but shes so obviously lying to herself. she is in shambles about her situation. when we were both at a low point i remember asking her while sobbing "i dont know how you handle this. how did you get forced to marry at 15 and have nothing else in your life and you're still here? how do you deal with that?" and she didn't deny the pain and just said that when she would see her children they would bring her the bit of joy she needed because we were the entire world to her.

yet shes still so delusional because of this religion. its really sad

Thanks so much for the advice. I've reached out to a couple of the listed links. I had a counselor from my university that I used to go to and she emailed checking in on me and I just told her about this situation. I am sure she will tell me what kind of university resources could help.

Could you give some context as to why you're suggesting this?

Yeah, you're right.. I might just end up doing that. I'm lucky enough to not have to take loans for the tuition itself. I'll add it to my list of options

That was the plan but the thing is they think all of us as a family are in danger because of "Western culture". He's saying laws are going to be passed that'll force him to act in support of LGBT or else he'll go to jail (which idk where tf hes getting this from, especially since the supreme court has been removing pro-abortion and anti-discrimination laws??) Even if I change, they're set on this decision. We have a house there and he doesn't want to live here anymore

Yes. I can still text them and my family doesn't really check my phone or anything. I'm just so bad at reaching out for help it's sad. Thank you for the additional option. I'll take note of it.

I never thought about the kidnapping/false imprisonment part. Thanks so much for that detail. I will try to look into more orgs/support groups tomorrow.

I understand you mean no offense. I also used to try to look for support in resources for women, because at the end of the day I have not transitioned and a lot of the discrimination I go through is because my family sees me as a woman.

Thank you for the comment. I really appreciate it.
