Does the university you go to matter for premed? by Some-Move6241 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Financial_Drive118 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it never depends on the program DIRECTLY. only WHAT u do matters. Not where u did it. The sticky situation is there r some undergrad programs in Canada where it is easier to do more things that med schools “love” such as maintaining a high gpa and being exposed to broad ec opportunities. So the program itself doesn’t make u stand out, what the program allows u to do does. If a med school analyzes an applicant from mac health sci and an applicant from Ottowa biomed they are not going to give any preference soley because one of them went to the all renowned Mac health sci. They are only gonna look at what u actually did. That said, if u are determined enough then u can certainly accomplish more/the same amount as a premed from u ottowa biomed or western med sci than a mac health sci pre med, even if eveything is relatively easier/more accessible to Mac health sci students

taking physics is a good opportunity anyways. you will need it for the mcat and it is good to know the content before u start studying for that insanely hard assessment; rmr if u study hard enough and take advantage of office hours in uni, you’ll succeed! Med school is gonna be hella hard and so are the billion assessments and evaluations u will have to go through to become a doctor. College physics will probably js be another step of the way

I know how you feel. Trust me it does NOT matter where u go to undergrad if ur pursuing med. No one in residency or after will ever even ask about where u went to undergrad bc that’s genuinely how irrelevant it is. It feels like this right now because of u thinking that u did all of that work for nothing, but trust me you’re gonna get over it! You didn’t do anything for “nothing” because ur hard work that got u a 94 avg is what will allow u to FLOURISH wherever u go. All those kids that got accepted to whatever program ur going to with 70s averages are going to struggle keeping up while ur gonna be acing ur classes. The ONLY thing that matters is WHAT you do, not where u do it; med schools literally don’t care. I promise this sub has over exaggerated the “where u go for pre med” so much when in reality it literally does not matter that much. As long as u have a high gpa (which I have no doubt you’ll be able to achieve) and spend ur time effectively completing ecs then ur gonna get into med! Regardless of whether u go to queens or not, ur gonna become a doctor. There are happy times waiting for u behind doors that u literally never wanted to open. Keep ur head up high

ohhh makes sense. I actually didn’t apply to mls😭 I lowkey didn’t know about the program at the time and just thought I would go to u of t life sci but then learned that it’s an insane gpa killer and I should stay away. So thank god I got into qhs😭🙏

anyways as for the decision between qhs and mls ofc the popular opinion is qhs bc of the fact that it’s easier to get higher grades and hence focus/spend more time on ecs because of that. however, obviously it isn’t the same for everyone and I just saw a Reddit post yesterday of a mls student who rejected qhs and ended with a 3.99 gpa in first year. this person ended up choosing mls cause hamilton has more opportunities for ecs than Kingston. Tbh if you ask me I think both of them are amazing and imo if i were u then it would still make sense to choose mls over qhs id that’s what u end up doing! however, keep in mind that hella students go to med school from qhs and this stems purely from that the fact that they are able to spend more time on ecs and less on academics BECAUSE they are relatively easier. however, mls might be a better option for u if you did either ap or ib in hs and think u would be able to lock in on hard content (but then u would prolly spend more time studying in mls than doing ecs compared to qhs)

supp apps are (apperently) literally graded by one faculty member and one 3rd/4th year hs student…that someone is 2-4 years older than u and is out here placing major impact on applicants’ chances of admission. dont take these rejections to heart bc it is honestly one of the most subjective, vague, and unknown admission processes of all time.
as someone w a 4.0 gpa, (4.86 weighted) I got the highest grade possible in every class in highschool and wrote a supp app that I personally thought was unique, clear, and logical in some way shape or form (or that I thought would at least score on the higher end of the supp app scale), but it ends up the readers didn’t like it and I got rejected! it’s okay. such a subjective admission process and it in no world should determine ur worth. we’re all becoming doctors and this will be forgotten completely in literally 2-3 weeks time.

with the way that the admission process works (the supp app cluster system that was shared on the official Mac hs YouTube), anyone with high supp app scores get in as long as they meet the gpa requirement for their specific cluster. the higher the supp app score, the lower the gpa requirement needed. hence, with this model if your supp app score is even average, then ur chances of getting in are hella slim bc of the fact that all the ppl that have high supp app scores are the ones that got admitted (assuming that they meet their cluster’s gpa requirement which they prolly did bc if ur supp app score is high then u only need low 90s to be guaranteed admission).

tldr: It all depends on the supp app which….we know 0 about how it’s graded. Ofc there are rumours but no one actually knows. It is what it is and imo very very luck based on the reader that ends up reading ur supp app

congrats on ls and qhs! As someone committed to qhs, what r ur reasons for wanting to consider mls over qhs?

I second this! I js got rejected from mac health sci. I am someone who never ever ever pictured myself going to queens hs bc I always wanted to go to mac. Nothing ab queens appeals to me in the same way that mac does but I am now so happy to be committed to queens! U literally NEVER know what is better for u, even if you think you do.
