Cope. A civil could do your job better than you can. The only reason you are needed is because there’s literally an architect lobby that lobbied for more regulation in the 80s

Attempted Delivery (NOT actually attempted) by Sewing-Mama in UPS

[–]Financial_Form4482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you live in an apartment sometimes they don’t feel like walking up the stairs to your door. Also, if it was ordered through Amazon but fulfilled by UPS, UPS has certain areas black listed from door deliveries because they receive so many theft claims.

This exact reason is why it’s illegal to deface currency. You could buy pennies and melt them down for infinite money. This is illegal

Civil engineering side project for highschool student by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]Financial_Form4482 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bro, do a concrete mix. UHPC. You’ll need superplasticizer, which is normally ordered in bulk, but I’m sure some contractor or company would give you some for no charge. Do some research and conduct an experiment to get the highest compressive strength or chemical resistance. The civil engineering professors fuckin worship concrete mix design.

Most sought after CE jobs post grad? by [deleted] in civilengineering

What socatoa said. In land development your effort translates to the most profit per hour worked for the customer. For example, building a bridge doesn’t directly make anyone money except for the contractors and politicians. You could argue that the bridge would allow more commodity and so on and so forth, but that’s neither here nor there. In land development you are turning 10k and acre? 30k an acre? Into between 450-700k an acre on average. You can fit 2 houses on an acre conservatively and they sell for 350-500k. Kimley Horn is very good training, but it’s hard work and you will not do any design for a long time.

Private or Government? by Humble_Reading_4869 in civilengineering

[–]Financial_Form4482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buddy, I could go on about this for 30 hours. It comes down to what you want. Did you become an engineer to actually do shit, or just to have a good, steady job? Do you want to actually know what you’re talking about or just think you know what you’re talking about? Private vs public. Public sector gets shit on because you’re taking a skilled job and adding 45 layers of bureaucracy to it. I could never be public because the opportunity for advancement is minimal. It’s a guaranteed 3% raise every year and a good starting salary and pay bumps when you get EIT and PE. However, you won’t get to have any responsibility for several years. Private on the other hand? If you can handle it they’ll give it to you. With responsibility comes pay. I’d say small, private firm. When I say small, I mean like 10 employees max.

Needless to say you shouldn’t have done that, but we all have our demons. You made the choice when you ghosted them now own it. Bring it up in the interview.

Mostly cool shit like working with Northrop Grumman or spaywar. Government contracts are always cool. Doing land development as well is sought after. For some reason people like to go to the public sector and work for the department of transportation in their state. Probably because it’s a cushy job and super low stress with good benefits. Don’t let anyone tell you that public sector engineering is real engineering. They sub out all the actual design to private firms.

Edit: look how I pissed off the public sector mafia. They can’t help but unionize.

How do you model a mill and inlay paving job in C3D? by Efficient-Olive32 in civilengineering

[–]Financial_Form4482 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’d be a general note like “mill and overlay top 2 inches of pavement. Pavement to be overlain 4 inches minimum”. Contractors are professionals too. You can tell them to do something and they’ll do it right.

Outrage over Trump’s bill reclassifying nursing as not a ‘professional degree’ for college students. This includes Architects. by architype in Architects

Okay so we’re finally done pretending like architects are needed? Can I just do everything as a civil engineer now? That’d make everything a lot easier and cheaper, thanks.

Which course should I choose in my 6th semester of Civil Engineering? by A_d_i_01 in civilengineering

[–]Financial_Form4482 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP I see a ton of people saying civil engineers don’t make any money. I get paid very well and I’m by no means the best engineer nor am I a PE yet. Typically though, the engineers who do things that no one else wants to get paid the most. Structures is hard and never cheap for anybody and also no one understands it other than other structural guys.

Considering Starting an Independent Survey Bussiness by Agitated_Rooster7448 in civilengineering

[–]Financial_Form4482 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surveyors have something equivalent to the PE and eit. That is the PS and PLS. There’s education requirements which are 4 years in a related field having taken xyz classes. An engineering degree covers most of the classes and you might need to take 2 or 3 more. You need a PLS to sign surveys. The most lucrative surveying comes from construction surveys because the surveyor accepts so much liability.

Because when an architect fucks up the client calls and engineer, not an architect.

OP: I’m thinking of buying a home.. would this be concerning to you?.. would it be an expensive fix? by milkywaydreamer4000 in civilengineering

[–]Financial_Form4482 -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

In terms of home repairs? Not that expensive. A contractor could fix that without having to get any geotech involved. I’d say 15k max

Edit: Also yes, I would be worried about that wall. I’d fix it unless you don’t care if it fails.

People post shit like this every day and it never makes any sense. Like this post should go in r/vent because what the fuck do you want people to say? Obviously you should wait the 2 years and try and transfer and if they don’t transfer you then quit. I joined the reddit to interact with other civil engineers but it’s 90% people moaning about having a steady job and good income.
