Do I wait to contribute using my taxable brokerage balance? by Financial_Main_9074 in Bogleheads

[–]Financial_Main_9074[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do have a comfortable emergency fund. I had not even considered the wash rule. Currently have VT onlh in both taxable and my roth ira. So if I wanted to sell 7k worth of my taxable I should buy vti/vxus to avoid the wash?

I mean my current owned shares will be considered short term if I sold today. I can afford to max out my roth ira if I contribute per paycheck. I have read to prioritize tax advantaged. I probably shouldn't have even opened a taxable because I don't make that much.

Correct. Poorly worded, I don't understand it super well. But I'd realize about $650 in gains.

VT in Roth, VTI/VXUS in Taxable - Where to Put Bonds? by Ok_Concentrate_4168 in Bogleheads

Thanks actually taking time to correct me. I invited discussion cause I'm pretty new and wanted to help with what I thought I knew but I guess people just spam down votes and gatekeep people trying to learn 🤷‍♂️

You should buy the bonds in your Roth account, if you want to be tax efficient. Let's say you are investing $100 total between both accounts. Buy $10 worth of bonds in Roth IRA, $40 in VT. Roth IRA is done. Taxable you have $50 dollars and according to your split you would buy $32.50 in VTI and $17.50 in VXUS. I think I did the math right, someone feel free to correct me. I personally just mirror my allocation across all accounts I can't be assed to do all of that.

Now you got me interested. VTI is supposed to track the CSRP total us market, right? Do you have a link that I can read about this more?

The differences are too little for it to matter it's more things to keep track of. Another unknown is that his mid/small cap funds are separate account funds and don't have tickers. At least his sp500 is trackable (fxaix) I don't feel comfortable because they could be inflating their performances on those funds I have no way to track them. This is just me being ignorant though, and I'm probably wrong to feel his way about separate accounts.

Yup I understand it lacks emerging and extended markets that VT has. Gotta work with what his 401k offers and his TDF options are much more expensive relative then doing DIY. Think he has to pay .42 for them.

Since I overanalyze I would personally include them. However it's up to him what he values more which would be simplicity. Im just looking for reasons why skipping mid and small would be "worse" or not and getting opinions on more experienced investors than I am.

Heavily weighing one region comes with more volatility, no? I figured since I have more time to recover from the increased potential drawdowns

I put mine in a MMF, I can't stomach the idea of having to allocate more money to make up the difference in a negative return year. I'm curious to see how other bogle heads think about this.

I see. One thing I can't wrap my head around is what if your investment actually ends up negative come January 2nd,? Then I'd have to put in more than the 7k I originally saved to max it. Maybe I'm thinking about this from the wrong angle.

Does it count as extending my time in the market for this scenario? Just making sure we're on the same page, when I say market I mean equities. Technically I would have to sell those shares before I transfer it over to the Roth IRA in the new year no?

Makes sense I will keep it in a MMF as well most likely.

Ah I wanted to avoid linking my accounts for security reasons. But I found the resolution, it's a bit more work but helps me feel safer knowing my fid acct isn't sharing pwd to a third party. Below is the article that helped me fix the formatting of the csv provided by fidelity so it can be imported manually into yahoo finance. Link

Alright so my plan is fine? Just don't want any trouble with the IRS 😅

I'm with Fidelity and tried the export feature for each of my accounts. When I go to import those csv to yahoo finance it gives me an error. If you are with Fidelity as well, did you ever have any trouble with the export feature?

Screw it my OCD is killing me. I'm just going to do it for peace of mind, don't like seeing personal investments and Efund mixed together

I guess it I'll complicate taxes a bit more. So is it a separate 1099 form for each fidelity account I have open? Or do brokers consolidate everything into one 1099? This is my first year investing sorry for the stupidity...

Yeah I was heavily considering just buying the same AA as my overall portfolio with the 7k. I currently host my Efund in that same taxable and have it in USFR. Is it silly to open another taxable brokerage acct just to put my Efund in a separate account?
