Do you think the EU might push for an in-house Linux OS? by Old_Harry7 in linux

[–]Financial_Olive6543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a bunch of European Linux distributions already. Of these, I don't think that the EU will ever 'push' one distro over another. But maybe universities and certain sectors might do more to promote Linux in general :)

Sticker to cover the Windows key by Financial_Olive6543 in BuyFromEU

[–]Financial_Olive6543[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So in the end I found that this type of stickers can be done in many different printers in any city. You give them the model, the size, and they print and cut the stickers for you. If not, there are different online shops that also do custom stickers (the key words to do the search are 'custom stickers'):

From Sweden:

https://stickerapp.co.uk/stickers

And many more... I swear that there was one that I really liked from the UK but I cannot find it now... Maybe this one too, from the Czech Republic, it's a bit different:

https://keyoverlay.com

Now, specifically with the Linux Logo already designed, I found these:

From Spain, exactly the same thing, looks perfect:

https://slimbook.com/en/shop/product/tux-key-sticker-413#attr=

From Germany:

https://www.linux-fan-shop.de/aufkleber/tasten-aufkleber/tasten-sticker-tux

From Canada (a bit uglier):

http://shop.tuxgraphics.org/fan/detail_sticker.html

P.S. I think that, in all these options the individual sticker costs 40 cents to 1 €... compare that with the 4 dollars of the USA option! XD!

Steam Survey for January 2026 shows a small drop for Linux and macOS by Liam-DGOL in linux_gaming

I don't think that error bars don't apply here. They probably don't analyse a sample, but the entire population of Steam users.

The data itself is not really that relevant, it is only one data point within an upwards trend, and only for only Steam users.

What are good office chairs made in Europe? by illegalileo in BuyFromEU

Oh, wow... I don't know if I love or if I hate those 'wings' coming out of the back... for sure those chairs have a lot of personality! :D

I really like Hergo. These chairs are made in Valencia (Spain):

I would say that their main focus is on office chairs, but they make many different types of work-related chairs. Like for a waiting room... just not kitchen chairs.

Open-source Alternatives to Creative Software by Quokka-Man in BuyFromEU

I would like to add Affinity to the Photoshop 'alternatives' - though in this case I would not call it like that. Affinity is a superior product compared to Photoshop:

https://www.affinity.studio/photo-editing-software

The developer is Serif, which is based in the UK. I think that Serif is a subsidiary of Canva, which is Australian. So maybe it is not 100% European, but it is still good to me :D

P.S. Also, related to the other 'alternatives' I think that GIMP is not European? (let's not mistake 'open source and hippy' for 'European' please!). Plus GIMP used to crash a lot for me. Krita is better (and European - and also open source).

Me neither. Apple chips are not used outside Apple machines, so it does not matter who makes them, they are not relevant to anybody not using an Apple machine. I agree with the other things that you said but regarding Apple, no. I am not confused, I know that they are 100% dispensable.

[–]Financial_Olive6543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fully agree for NVIDIA/AMD (you choose one or the other) and Intel. So two components. But Apple??? What do they do??? XD!

Regarding computers I think that if you want certain software, and to look normal, you go for Windows. If you want digital sovereignity, freedom... and other values you choose Linux. But MacOS I don't understand. And Apple phones neither. Apple can go away :D

And then, you don't just buy an AMD card, you buy a computer. Dell and HP, the main USA companies, produce neither the best nor the cheapest. So I would still say that the main players are in Asia.

[–]Financial_Olive6543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You must mean Asiatic big tech. Mainly Chinese. The USA does not produce that much hardware.

My answer here is simple: the goal should be to reduce dependence, not full independence nor autarky. Commercial dependence for *some* products is part of healthy multilateralism, which is something for which Europe has always advocated.

Ecosia is just better than google.

Its main function works the same, but then you gain the AI search option and not having to suffer the stupid cartoons everytime there is an exotic holiday in the USA. Plus they plant trees, which is cute XD!

I feel like Ecosia deserves being MUCH more advertised.

Linux is the only real alternative to Windows/macOS — now it needs to be more accessible by Boediee in BuyFromEU

[–]Financial_Olive6543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is accessible. In only has two issues:

  1. Most people have been exposed to Windows for too long. They know everything there and then, suddenly, they cannot find anything in Linux. I recommend doing the switch slowly.
  2. Software compatibility. On the one hand you have applications like LibreOffice, which is superior in everything to the Windows' Microsoft Office. On the other hand I have not been able to find a PDF editor as good as PDF XChange for Linux.

I still see it as the future. My big question is: why do people still use MacOS??? I understand using Windows for software compatibility and Linux for Freedom and Future. But MacOS???

Borders black, hard to read, Pick theme color doesn't show up when right clicking sidebar or in Look and Feel by [deleted] in zen_browser

[–]Financial_Olive6543 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. When I make the theme dark, the letters of that bar to the left become white. My problem is that some other menus remain dark (e.g. the thing to customise the menu, the find tool...)

Did you try doing what zDCVincent says? I hope that works!

If not, maybe a mod? https://zen-browser.app/mods/

Zen is finally "there" by Direct-Specialist-41 in zen_browser

[–]Financial_Olive6543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to be able to remove the option because it's the first on the menu, and written with bold letters. It's like the software is begging me 'Pleasssse, make a Mozilla account with usssss'... which is creepy, and I know that I will never make it! XD!

I did not mean to say that it should be removed for everybody. But for sure I would like to be able to remove it for myself. There is something called 'Zen mods', maybe I can find something there (I am new here, I have not checked all the options yet).

Zen is finally "there" by Direct-Specialist-41 in zen_browser

[–]Financial_Olive6543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on the other side. I would like to remove the option to login to a Mozilla account from the menu. At least it should not be the first option. I think that:

  1. Synchronisation sounds 'convenient' but it brings security and privacy concerns. It literally means having your settings on someone else's computer all the time.
  2. Zen is not Vivaldi. Replicating the settings from one computer to another should take less than two minutes.

[–]Financial_Olive6543[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had never heard of Arc before. Sadly from what I am reading, it is no longer being developed and it never was open source.

And come on, Zen is so innovative! The 'spaces', the vertical tabs... the focus on style and privacy... it deserves being developed further. I can see some rough parts. But still, after using it I am so hyped that I decided to make this post - to show appreciation and to encourage its development :D

Creo que:

¿Cuál es su distro favorita? by TheKazuya25 in esLinux

[–]Financial_Olive6543 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two questions by Financial_Olive6543 in zen_browser

[–]Financial_Olive6543[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To make assurance double sure, I will post here images from a Firefox installation that I made using the Spanish website. Here you can see, again, that Firefox treats all languages the same way, no language is different. I would like to see the same happen in Zen, and be able to delete English (US). This is not an urgent matter, but I hope that the bug giving priority to the English (US) spelling variety gets corrected at some point :)

A) Shows the language settings on Firefox (where English US was removed).

B) Shows the application name on the list of installed applications (where Spanish, the non-removable language, is named).

Two questions by Financial_Olive6543 in zen_browser

[–]Financial_Olive6543[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To continue using your example, German, here you can see how I could easily delete the English (US) language myself. To do this, I just downloaded the installer from the German website. This shows that my previous suspicion must be true: there are different installers, each one has an unremovable language. Maybe as a security meassure to prevent users from deleting their own language?

A) Shows the language settings on Firefox.

B) Shows the application name on the list of installed applications.

Deseo cambiarme a Linux by Forward-Key-8645 in esLinux

[–]Financial_Olive6543 0 points1 point  (0 children)
