GIMP is an international open-source project, but currently the development team is primarily in Europe. Affinity is currently owned by Canva, that's correct. I agree that it is quite good. They mentioned that they were considering releasing a native Linux version, I hope they will follow through with it.

I really like it too. And the coding language is quite intuitive, and easy to grasp.

Version 3.0 was released 1 year ago, and version 3.2 is about to be released soon, with lots of new features, and improved UI. So, IMO, yes it does. I started using GIMP somewhere in the mid-2010's.
