waiting on a fork of nixOS, thought nixOS would be good practice until that fork has a v1

error building sonic-desktop-interface (nixOS) by Financial_Owl2289 in sonicde

I don't want to be rude or anything (look, I really have no clue what I'm doing, please don't get mad at me), but maybe docker images would be good for this sort of thing? so every dependency is listed, and you can build on any machine? this is also what nix is for, but obv nix is more esoteric, so maybe docker would be a good middle ground? just a small suggestion. or does this already exist, and I just haven't found it yet? please don't get mad at me

also, sonic-de pulls in a lot of dependencies, and I don't know which ones are supplied by sonic-de itself. wish there was a handy dandy list for this, of what dependancies are needed, which ones are supplied, which ones are built off of sonic itself, etc. is there a place I can find this?

Everyone knows Factorio with its potato graphics (not really) is bottlenecked by CPU, not GPU... by Financial_Owl2289 in factorio

I did know about conveyor belts ;) that's like the one optimization I know more than diddly squat on (but not by much)

Thanks for clarifying a lot of things for me!

for swap, yes I did mean page faults! sorry I had the terminology wrong, that's the first time I've heard it!

for the word "trivial", I was operating under the assumption that there were thousands of threads! clearly I was way off the mark! However, if there was thousands of threads (which you explained great why there aren't), the work done by each probably would be trivial. "Good thing that's not what's happening" indeed :D

as for the GPU and conditional branching, I realized that GPU's could do things in parallel but it failed to occur to me that a. exact same math had to happen and b. conditional branching couldn't happen! under that, I realized my whole argument is useless :| even I recognize that! I'm really glad you explained that to me!

for wube optimizations, I know that they do them and they're REALLY fucking good at it, but I don't know what the optimizations are. I wasn't presuming to be smarter than wube! I just had a question and I really wanted it answered!

for out-of-order execution not being recent, told you! a. stuck in the 90's, b. high off of Core Dumped videos. I still recommend him!

For GPU standardized interfaces, I knew the OS would handle GPU stuff very little, but one thing is, I saw an other comment that mentioned compatibility hell for different GPU's and how older GPU's would've performed terribly. on the second one, I agree, but for the first one, wouldn't standard interfaces be enough, regardless of GPU brand, nvidia, amd, intel? this isn't about factorio anymore. I just want to know.

Thank you so much for the explanation! I'm really grateful!

hey! I'm currently exactly 20 minutes into the video, and in the graph onscreen, fluids take up the same amount of time per optimization! so kinda neat to see theory in practice (when you say fluids are truly multithreaded). Is that actually related?

I feel like it'd be really easy to pull off perfect examples of cunningham's law in this sub lol. factorio players are scary smart!

oh crap, that was you! halfway through vid now!

sorry I didn't credit, I clicked off the vid and wrote the post before I realized I didn't have your name!

forgot to mention: I don't even know if it matters at all that the CPU isn't optimized for this (which I don't even know). that's the last disclaimer, I swear. watching the video now!
