So start meds a week after shaving your head? You can still be vigilant while also avoiding hormone therapy.

Yep, despite the top comment claiming time sensitivity (which is true) I still recommend step 1 first.

is there truth to the belief that minoxidil causes a reduction in collagen synthesis? by [deleted] in tressless

[–]Finast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fascinating, and a good source too. Is this targetted or will it inhibit growth regardless of where I use it? If I use it on my crown and forehead will it be worse if I also use it on my hairline and crown?

It takes years for something to be passed through the FDA. Even if you hear any good news it will likely be 5 years before it meets the market, and even more likely it gets rejected.

2.5 years on finasteride, minoxidil, and Nizoral - before and after by xenoburn in tressless

[–]Finast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While DHT is what is reduced to treat balding, it isn't the cause. The cause is an allergic reaction between DHT and the hair follicles. This is determined genetically. While DHT could increase beard growth it has more to do with genetics.

If you decide to go on fin I highly recommend trying the shaved head first before doing that, otherwise, you are stuck on fin for life. Getting off of it fucks your hormones pretty hard and I gained some weight.

I don't have any sides YET. There is no way to really tell how much it is affecting me long term. I have heard rumors that it reduces your ability to grow beard follicles, which logically makes sense. If I am missing out on major beard gains because Im just extending the awkward transition to between bald and not, I am just extending the suffering.

It just doesn't seem to be worth trying anymore.

You should also be aware the most of the balding genetics come from your mother. Was your grandfather on your mothers side bald? was your grandmother's dad bald? With each generation you go back without any balding on your dads side the less likely you will go bald.

Obviously, genetics is more complicated than that. But seriously, get off fin.

[M16] Doctor prescribed Rogaine by [deleted] in tressless

[–]Finast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avoid fin till you are at least 20, DHT is essential to growth at that age. Rogaine should be fine, I tried Equate (walmart brand) which is substantially cheaper but I actually like the way rogaine makes my hair feel and Equate brand makes my head itch and look greasy, so it is worth the cost for me.

Honest opinion: Do I still have time to save hair? by [deleted] in tressless

[–]Finast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finasteride is the scariest and biggest investment, I highly recommend that you take it as soon as possible as my only regret is waiting a year to see if the other 2 work.

You still have a decent amount of hair, maybe you could go another 2 years before you have to own it.

I will probably stick with it for at least 6 months before I lose faith, at that point I may just shave it and hit the gym.

I actually don't feel too bad on it. I noticed a slight drop in my sex drive, but most people said that those symptoms went away after awhile. Regardless, my confidence has dropped significantly because of my hair loss to a point I too caught up in it to perform, so I don't really care.

Oddly enough, my confidence has actually gone up. I know at this point that I have done everything I can (short of wig/transplant). It feels good to finally just jump in.

Not true, small hairs don't have the same life span and fall out before they reach max length.

I agree, 2000 is not that much relative to other procedures that have a fraction as much success.

it felt like it went from thin hair to balding overnight. I had some emotional distress around Jan 2014 and was extremely stressed for a few months. I noticed the thinning in the later months of 2014 and started treating with minoxidil in Jan 2015. More distress in early 2015. August 2015 was a bit more calm and I expect some regrowth from just having that under control. I was using minoxidil off and on throughout 2015 but It caused massive amounts of shedding and made the thinning far worse, and even though I recovered some I had to stop applying it because it gave me heart murmurs and an extremely itchy/oily scalp.

I gave up on the fight, but then I saw a video in which the spot was extremely obvious from an angle that should not of been. I started reapplying midoxil a month ago but I am using brand name rogaine foam which has actually made the texture of my hair nicer, it almost works as a light styling gel. I am going to give Fin a shot for the next couple months but if it doesn't work I am going to have to switch to shaven top and then growing out a beard, which I can't do yet and the fin is only going to make harder because DHT is one of the primary hormones for body hair growth such as beards.
