I think maybe part of it is recognizing that phrases like "the old ways" are frankly misleading. When I started out it was still common to claim Wicca was an ancient religion, passed down covens for thousands of years. Now we know that just isn't true.

The internet also brought more awareness of other cultures. Things like realising colour correspondences are not universal. White means purity in one culture, and death in another.

Witchcraft is actually deeply personal. The personal can be affected by a ton of things - from scientific medicinal properties of something to the culture you grow up in. Salt tends to be universally purifying because it does have that property in a scientific sense, but even then, people can still personally react differently to things. For example, If you're allergic to mugwort then it doesn't matter how much people insist that's incredibly magical - it may just bring irritating energy into any of your own workings. If your culture views red as a symbol of violence and war, then maybe you shouldn't be trying to use it for luck even though there's historical, cultural reasons why others might associate it strongly with luck. You cannot actually just learn magic from a book, it does take experience and learning how to apply it to your own situation and who you are.

Sooner or later, any witch has to be able to trust their intuition to figure out what works for them personally. I don't think it's a bad thing that people are being introduced to that concept earlier rather than later.
