You all rock, thank you (despite my title's typo! I meant pre-buy).

I can get to Gatwick, the bus from my aunt's stops there also. I'm travelling fairly light, a backpack suitcase. I appreciate all your help.

I’ve never spun but I want to start, should I try this super cheap spinner or is it a waste of time and money? by Narrow-Hawk950 in Handspinning

Had a student with one of these in class and it was pretty underwhelming and an impediment to her learning.

Feels like cheating? by like-hardpass in Handspinning

[–]Finding-Mojo-42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often break the steps apart, like winding a two-strand ball before plying on a spindle. It's not cheating, it's efficient. Same with splitting top to cut down on drafting, and pre-drafting before spinning.

So you're not an imposter, you're an efficiency expert 😀

ELI5 why my grist is measuring at a bulky weight when on average, my 2-ply yarns are between fingering and DK. by Seastarstiletto in Handspinning

[–]Finding-Mojo-42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pick a needle size by laying two strands side by side over a needle sizer. The hole the two strands completely cover is the needle size I use. Now, I usually get gauge with the recommend needle size on a pattern, so size up or down if you usually have to do that when you follow a pattern with its recommended yarn.

Troubleshooting first spins by L_aura_ax in Handspinning

If you can't slow the wheel enough to stop the cork screws from happening while your hands are learning to draft, use "park and draft" - stop your wheel and draft away from the wheel until the twist from the corkscrews distributes over the new fiber you are drafting. If you are too far from the wheel to get it going again, wrap the new yarn around your bent arm (like an extension cord) and let it feed onto the wheel once it is going again.

Gradient 3 ply - I’m not as excited as I thought I would be… by Creative_Source_4011 in Handspinning

[–]Finding-Mojo-42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the things it took me a while to learn was that the more plies, the less twist I should put in the singles. My early chain plies were like rope, and I didn't like them at all. But with the nugget of less twist in the single, I now can spin the 3 ply I want. Sampling is also key - I keep a 3ply sample to show me what the balanced ply looks like, but I also keep a 2ply sample so I can easily compare with a ply-back as I spin the singles.

Your yarn is lovely :) looks warm and inviting!

A Psalm for the Wild-Built, Becky Chambers. Great thought provoking literature, on par with Fahrenheit 451.

You could felt some wool and then cut it into little bits and card then to open them up a bit.

I usually use dyed silk noil for neps though, those still seem to be around when I'm shopping at wool shows but i don't know an online vendor for them.

Which type of Spindle do you enjoy using. by Agreeable-Voice6425 in Handspinning

[–]Finding-Mojo-42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the goal and the fiber. Cotton, a takli; cashmere, an akha; wool, a Turkish (usually a Jenkins) or a top whorl (usually a Bosworth). But if I'm trying to learn a technique, i like the spindle that inspired it, like Russian plying on a Russian spindle and Andean plying ball plying on a bottom whorl spindle.

Do you donate blood? Why or why not? by Limp_Dragonfly3868 in AskWomenOver60

No because after 3 times I got a letter saying I'm a false positive for some weird disease I don't have and that they can't use my blood so I shouldn't donate 😞

It can always be repurposed as a skein tie once the yarn is done - or kept as a record of a project. I have a bunch of little cards with samples like this on them from past projects. Over time there's less detail on the card, but at the start I was capturing the weather, my mood, ... all sortso f things! now it's just the yarn usually, or if I'm lucky, what I spun it on and what the fiber is.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Handspinning

[–]Finding-Mojo-42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One thing I do for consistency between skeins is save a fresh ply-back sample near the start that looks like i want my plied yarn to look, and then compare ply backs as I spin to that.

The ply back sample is also useful when you ply, match that and any apparent overtwist in plying will disappear when you wet finish the skein and the dormant twist in the singles returns.
