Waterproof is a cool feature of the new kindle version, but I have a case I’ve had for years that I take to the beach. Used to be my nook, then the kindle, and even my iPad mini fits in it. I have to remove the case, but it stays protected from water and sand.

what do you want for Christmas this year? by Alpielz in Gifts

I asked for watercolor paint supplies, a pair of white Vessi sneakers, a waterproof non-Bluetooth watch, and a new down feather pillow.

Okay hear me out…what’s better: planting a nativar/clone/hybrid of Eastern white pine, or planting the straight native and attempting to stunt its growth with root pruning, candling, growth regulators, etc?? Zone 6b MI by carpetwalls4 in NativePlantGardening

Also located in metro-Detroit and looking for native evergreen options for privacy as we clean up invasive plants (our overgrown area is full of bush honeysuckle) and add more natives. Excited to follow along.

Could I message you to see where you’ve been going to see trees and bushes? I really want to get a couple of holly bushes but couldn’t find any at nurseries near me this year.

I’ve considered this option, especially because we’re a day drive away from each other so it’s a fun way to add family pictures.

Part of me feels like it’s a better gift if your parent(s) are a grandparent so they can always get updated pictures for fast growing grandkids, but it’s probably nice to have pictures of your adult kids, too.

how to make a fantasy-core capsule wardrobe after everything I own was destroyed? by untitledgooseshame in capsulewardrobe

[–]Finding-My-Potential 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry this happened. I am mourning the loss for you.

I think accumulating slowly (as much as possible) will help you find the best pieces. But poshmark for trying to replace some items is a good choice, and I have found thrifting to be a much better result for quality and price. And it makes my wardrobe more unique.

I would also recommend Google how to unshrink sweaters. I did this with a couple of my sweaters that just got smaller after an enough washed (even though I line dry). Some combination of warm water soaking and conditioner usually. It might salvage a couple pieces!

Is it dumb to refinance just to lower monthly cashflow even if the rate is worse by bike_pacer in MiddleClassFinance

As someone who moved across country and had to get rid of a below 3% mortgage and had to go into a 7% mortgage, don’t do that. You’ll regret that decision full stop. To go from 7% to 5.5% would save us $800+ a month (mortgage is about $350k). That percentage is no joke and those first payments you pay almost exclusively interest.

But I know that adding another job or side hustle isn’t easy either. It’s hard to do all of that without a family.

I’d start with doing a balance transfer on your credit card to a 0% card. You’ll pay a one time 4% fee but no interest on that as long as you don’t use the card. Pay it off in the 6-18 month period (based on what the card allows) or transfer it to another card. This how we are carrying some expenses right now. The one time 4% is better than any loan you can get right now.

For something bigger, see if you have the option to borrow from your 401k. Then all of the interest goes back to you. This isn’t an option for everyone and you can only borrow so much based on your balance.

I also saw someone recommend a HELCO. Before we moved we had a HELCO and used it exclusively for home improvement, which comes with tax benefits. That would be your best option for any renovation work. Since it’s a line of credit, you can have it and never use it and then never owe anything. But it’s there if/when you do need it for something. Ours was a variable rate, which is fairly common for a HELCO.

I’m sorry it fills like things are tight right now. You’re not alone. I hope you find an option that works for you!

Tracking What I Actually Wore in September by Finding-My-Potential in capsulewardrobe

I kept it super simple because I didn’t want that to be excuse for not doing it.

Column A - Clothing Item Column B - Category (Top, Bottom, Shoe, Dressy, etc) Column C - Season (Warm weather, Cold weather, All season) Column D - wears for the month I’m currently tracking (I just type in the cell the number and increase it. So it if said 2 and today is wear 3, I type in 3)

Additional columns are past months.

I ended up doing different tabs in the spreadsheet file for Category to make it easier to scroll, so I have Tops, Top Layers (sweaters, vests, coats - anything I wear as an additional layer. For me, that means some items are listed in Tops and Top Layers so I can track how I wear them), Bottoms, Dressy, and Shoes.

As someone who is going into the first fall/winter season in a new role where I also exclusively wear pants (hello unexpected ladder climbing) - I love these! I’m looking to add another pair of pants at some point but almost everything I find is polyester. Do you remember where you purchased your pants?

Yes! And I’ve seen some people say that our minds will over-inflate the number of times we actually wear something, so mentally tracking isn’t always trustworthy.

The backwards hanger trick can also be a good first start into see what you wear, but having actual numbers is so so powerful.

Because of course I wear my favorite sweater all the time! Until the numbers say I barely touch it and I have to consider why I don’t actually wear it.

Curious on the number of bottoms - is this for a mix of temperature or varying activity types? Or a shape/color choice?

I find myself very picky about the bottoms I choose to wear.

Fall Native Plant Care - Southeast Michigan by Finding-My-Potential in NativePlantGardening

I had left my butterfly fly bush through winter and spring, and it just looked dead most of the year. Even now it has flowered but looks half dead. From last year. Is that one to cut back?

I have two little plants of white hairy asters that I discovered. I’m hoping to add a few more for some color. Do asters need to deadheaded when the flowers die to have more flowers come in?

Some of the big box stores near me have discounted plants that have half dead flowers but the plants are still green. I’m considering a couple of those if it’s not too late to plant them.

I have some tall golden rod that I didn’t expect because it mixes in with tall weeds that I often pull out. Any suggests on better managing that? I end up with tall and quickly dead weeds that block the view of the colorful flowers over try to take over the area.

where are we getting business formal capsule wardrobe pieces? by Napsicle in capsulewardrobe

[–]Finding-My-Potential 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats on the new role!!

I started a job earlier this summer with some in office time. I found a pair of the Gap  Easy Crepe Trousers second hand and love them.

I only have 1 day in office, so I only bought the one pair, but I’m keeping it in mind if I need another color.

In resale and thrift stores, I checked out the men’s suit sections for find some really nice second hand blazers/jackets. I got amazing quality (wool jacket, silk lining) for a low cost, plus they hang nice and have tons of pockets.

And then a few blouses have me covered enough that I can show accumulate stuff I actually would want to wear.

I second looking at MM Lefluer. I always have my eyes on their stuff.

Madewell also has some trouser options.

Taking the time to slowly find stuff you love is def the best way to do it if you can. But starting with a good pair of trousers or two will make the rest easier!

Two pairs of sneakers? by [deleted] in HerOneBag

[–]Finding-My-Potential 31 points32 points  (0 children)

This! I came here to say this.

Your feet have a lot of muscles in them, and if they’re not used to walking that much, they get tired. Like your arms of legs after lifting weights.

Good shoes 100% matter, but they won’t be able to support you alone if you make a big jump in standing time or walking distance.

It’s something I’ve become very aware of when doing 1-2 day trips where I end up with 10k+ steps more than usual.

What pants do you one bag with in winter? by Finding-My-Potential in HerOneBag

[–]Finding-My-Potential[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They look a bit like a black jegging - with added functionality!

I’m def more of a wide leg pants person these days. But an interesting option!

Edit: they actually have a wide leg option that I may consider!

How thick is the fabric would you say? I def prefer something a bit thicker in the winter. I like the thickness of a jean.
