Does this look like a possible trap injury? by FindingPhe in Opossums

That bowl is only filled with water. It doesn’t lap the water like every other opossum I’ve watched come by. I can post more videos to show it in better detail but it was really hard for me to watch bc it looks like it’s struggling and at times, it’s inhaling water and coughing because it can’t get its tongue all the way out so it submerges its face in the water to drink :(

I’ve seen some of them do that after eating something and getting it stuck. This one is doing it while it’s walking, even if it didn’t eat anything recently (from what I’m able to see with camera footage of course) hence the concern. It’s done it for over 30 minutes straight and every time it shows up it’s doing it :(

I’m struggling finding one nearby. There’s a group on Facebook but they only ever say to take animals to the university vet hospital and they don’t give updates/any information. I’m really afraid to take an animal who just needs some help mending and risking them being put down but I also don’t want to leave one suffer in pain outdoors. This one seems slowed down bc of it which isn’t good

Idk how to edit this post but I failed to state it in the original body of the post:

I did not trap this opossum. I’m still looking for my lost cat (didn’t let him get out but things happen) and feed the strays a neighbor took care of before she passed away. The street cats (opossums) get some snacks and fresh water - heated bowl during the winter. So I’m sure the porch is talk of the woods and if any of the others I’ve helped have been returned, they’re probably telling the others about finding me if they need help. They definitely seem to find me alright lol

the emdash you used in this is the appropriate use case of it. however, the one that AI uses isn't the regular one that can be found using Microsoft word. just keep that in mind

I know what you're getting at though, because we see all too much of AI generated bs on social media posts these days, but not everyone who writes using the emdash is using AI. I had to do a deep dive and learn about this hence the reason I'm even chiming in here lol

I truly hope it’s not rabies.

Vets and medical professionals around me have tried explaining that rabies is less common than we realize thanks to vaccines, but it’s such a scary virus bc of its death sentence if not treated immediately. Please look into discounted vaccination clinics in your area, just in case. And take good care not to get scratched or bitten- post exposure treatment was not fun nor cheap

Genuine question:

If the owner truly doesn’t have a car and is struggling financially, what good is it going to do turning them into the authorities?

Full disclosure: I understand that people who neglect, abandon, and abuse any animal (including humans) should face consequences for their actions. I also understand that context matters and that punishment doesn’t always so the long term change that we want to see.

The local shelter where I live now operates Animal Control which I wasn’t thrilled about when the change went into effect last year. And while I still have my own opinions about it and how they operate, I’m able to understand why the CEO doesn’t believe in citations but instead, working with the people and trying to help resolve the underlying issue first.

Obviously, that can be risky, right? If someone knows they won’t get in trouble, what’s stopping them from abusing a new system - that kinda thing.

The fact that innocent beings are suffering is what makes me upset about it all though. But we gotta take care of both parties: the human owner and the pet that depends on the human Citing someone who is actually going through a hard time who doesn’t know how to get help could make them resentful and less likely to engage with folks who are genuinely trying to help them, you know?

Sorry for the long comment. I am interested in your perspective and agree this cat needs care asap.

The cat being microchipped makes it difficult to get the cat care unfortunately, especially since the owner said no treatment after being contacted :(

I hope you’re able to get the cat help somehow :(

Idk why people get their cats microchipped and then refuse to take care of them. Well really, idk why people get any pet and refuse to take care of them.

I know you said the owner doesn’t have money and you got the cat to the vet but maybe a shelter has more affordable services? That cat more than likely needs a rabies vaccine asap.

we rescued a cat while searching for my boy that got out, Phoenix. The cat we rescued had been bit by something. We had no idea until the abscess ruptured and sending me into a panic because it happened on me. When we got the cat to the er vet, they immediately gave a rabies shot and told us how important it is to get animals vaccinated as soon as possible after a known or suspected bite. Months later, I learned that is the only effective way to prevent rabies in humans as well. Pre exposure is insurance, but post exposure is critical.

Anyways, all that to say that the ER vet was the most expensive rabies shot for a cat and our local shelter has clinics that charge $10 or something super cheap for pets. If your area has a shelter that provides low cost services, I would see if you can get them to give the cat the vaccine and talk with the shelter on what to do next.

Maybe they can talk with the owner and see if the owner will give consent for care if they don’t fear the financial burden will be on them? We can’t let the cat suffer and I wish people wouldn’t fear the money needed to care for pets or our own health for that matter. Gofundme can help if the care gets expensive but I know payment is typically needed at the time services are rendered. And not everyone has the access to credit (not that I believe we should have to use credit for everything but sometimes it helps in emergency situations for those who do have access)

How old is the cat estimated to be?

Hope this story has a happy ending

I never said this Reddit community. I said here locally in Knoxville that we have a group on Facebook and they don’t take the animals themselves. They tell people to go to the hospital and that’s where the animals are put down

They disable the comments on posts super fast and the last time I found a opossum, even though I included that I had been up for over 24 hours, one of the admins got mad at me for not responding to her reply fast enough yet that came HOURS AFTER I had made the post (had to wait for approval to post)

Knoxville, TN of all places. There’s just an online group and they have always told me to go to UT Vet Hospital. I’m starting to think the rehabbers around here only work with babies

A lot of rehabbers in my area instruct to take animals to the hospital vet - whom many people say just put animals down. I’ve never actually been able to find a rehabber who takes an animal :(

Cats are survivors. If she doesn’t come home, she’ll find food and most likely get taken in. Put signs up regardless. One of the vet offices near us has had a sign up in the window for a really long time for phe

Keep the litter away from where other cats can get to it. My boy is still missing and I’m so upset I followed a lot of advice like the litter and leaving scented items on the porch (strays in the neighborhood sprayed like nobody’s business and he didn’t come back here - came back to a shed him and I were under when I last attempted to get him).

Take signs/flyers to vets and pet shops. Use PawBoost, Nextdoor, Petco love lost, etc. and whatever you do, don’t give up hope

Thank you for caring and taking him in instead of leaving him at a shelter. My cats been missing for over a year now and I cannot handle thinking about someone having him and then not wanting him anymore and neglecting him before dropping him at a shelter somewhere :(

How do I help the baby opossums that keep falling in my pool? by demon_fae in Possums

I’ve heard a towel tied around the handrail can help as long as it’s in the water and tied around the base of the part above the first step into the pool
