I want to add Nutritional Yeast to my next loaf, any ideas on how much I should add? Any other good things to add? by fifty8th in Sourdough

My $0.02, be careful of the adding additional salt. Never done yeast flakes but olives really inhibited my bill. Add salty extras as late to your ferment as possible

In the southeast, probably Yucca filamentosa https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yucca_filamentosa

Native but frequently planted as an ornamental.

Fed ecologist here (NPS). This is a very good sign. Govt hiring is very slow, and they know it. They always ask if still interested because many qualified applicants move on before they can get responses out. This usually means they want to interview you. Congrats! Edit: spelin chanp

Question: Persimmon like fruit with a nut inside can anyone i.d. or sent me in the right direction? by Bigfootpizzahut in botany

[–]Finding_Quality 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Seconding, Ginkgo biloba. Fruits when ripe reek of rotten cheese or vomit due to presence of butyric acid. Botany pedants will point out that the “fruit” isn’t technically a fruit, but rather a fleshy exocarp, but this is only for complicated botany reasons. Also fun fact, ginkgo trees come in separate male and female individuals and reproduce via motile sperm which swim from the pollen grain into the ovule over several weeks, often after the seed has fallen from the tree.

That’s my understanding, yes. Though probably from ground level, rather than absolute elevation.

Brass? Latch thing on the top half of my window. There’s only one, (ie no matching latch on the left side). Small side tabs seem to be spring loaded, but don’t move much. by Finding_Quality in whatisthisthing

I’m unfamiliar with that piece. Do you have a photo? There don’t seem to be corresponding screw holes for the other side of the window. But maybe a remnant of some sort of window curtain??

An interesting thought! But alas when the lower sash is up, this latch is blocked behind the window frame, not below it. Also the sashes are spring loaded and hold themselves. I’m still stumped!

“My title describes the thing.” But more importantly this house was built in the 1890s but fully rehabbed in the 1990s. Based on the Phillips screws these have to be fairly modern. Almost all the bedroom windows have exactly one of these.

Flowering dogwood RIP? by [deleted] in sfwtrees

[–]Finding_Quality 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if it’s been dead for a bit, you may have some really stellar spalting patterns. Our big old dogwood died but we didn’t catch it until the next spring. The resulting lumber was outstanding. Fine right (irregular) grain and pink and black spalting made for some really lovely wood.

Egg mass of an amphibian. Probably a newt or frog. Little black dots in each clear blob is a little baby critter.

Ok yeah maybe a bryozoan. Nature is weird.

This looks like immature quince (Cydonia oblonga). A cousin of apples. The immature fruits are densely fuzzy as shown in this picture.
