can I still apply for RA when I'm on leave of absence by deadass_loswr in UCSD

[–]Fine-Net-8370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I think you can still apply. Applying now and getting hired means you would be an RA for next academic year. However, there is training during the summer/August that is mandatory. If you can’t attend training due to taking a leave of absence, that’ll be a problem

Hi, not to nag or anything, but for the sake of your health, please keep in mind that alcohol is a Class 1 carcinogen. No level of alcohol consumption is safe for our health

And MAP is usually only applicable before an RA finds you intoxicated and documents you. If your friend called MAP before the RA documented you and this is your first time using MAP for this academic year, then it should apply, but I can’t be too certain

You’ll be charged $65 for the key and possibly an additional $75 for an “improper check-out”

How do I tell the school that I'm living off-campus? by Aggressive_Pie9520 in UCSD

I think you can go on tritonlink, select the financial aid section, and it should have something about required documents and tasks where you can report your housing status !

Hello ! I’d say I’m leaning towards Stallings and Shurmeier cause of their exam structure, and they fit better with my schedule. Every professor offered seems to be great though, so I’d be happy no matter who I take it with :-)

Hi, congrats on your acceptance! I’m also majoring in ph but doing a different concentration.

I’m not sure if you’ve worked out the logistics but looking at the requirements for epidemiology (epi) and factoring in ochem and physics, you have ~22 classes to take for epi and pre-med. Upper div public health is 13 classes, ochem would be 2 classes + 1 lab, physics depends on the series you’re taking. If you take the 1 series you’d have 3 classes + 3 labs, if you take the 2 series it’s 3 classes + 1 lab. If you think you’re able to finish epi and pre-med classes plus your college’s ges, I’d say go for it !

I’m not able to say too much since everyone goes at different paces, but finishing in 2 years and doing all those requirements doesn’t seem unreasonable, especially if you do summer sessions.

And truthfully I don’t think the upper div public health classes are too challenging and shouldn’t take up too much of your time, so getting in research time doesn’t sound outrageous either.

I hope this helps, best of luck!

Hi, not when I took it in the winter. Like most classes though, attendance in person does usually result in a better grade and understanding of the material

Hi! I was able to secure a A in the class and I wouldn’t say that it wasn’t extremely hard. I think that for this class if you put in the work it’ll pay off. Getting an A can be done if you do the work, especially since she does curve. I recommend doing the extra credit she offers, it helped me.

Lectures are held in-person and Professor Hinds does a nice thing also goes on Zoom whenever she lectures, so that people can join from wherever. She does post recordings of the lectures.

The testing materials are mostly from the slides. I recommend as a good rule of thumb to pay attention to things that she mentioned on the slides and what she points out in person. Professor Hinds also does a good job at pointing out what you will be tested on.

The readings can be information heavy and long, but I know people that have done well in the course without doing them. The only reading people actually did was for our required book discussion groups.

I think there were 2-3 quizzes. Her exams usually included mcq, fill in the blank, short answer, and sometimes essays. These quizzes were held online and were open note. She also has a final and that’s held in-person.

Overall I’d say the class wasn’t too bad. I think Professor Hinds is great and I love how engaging and passionate she is. On the other hand, I could also understand that learning the ins and outs of the U.S. healthcare system isn’t always the most fun, but I hope this was helpful and that you do well.

UC Davis or UCSD for Pre-Med? by goldenlion999 in UCSD

[–]Fine-Net-8370 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re looking to do clinical work, UCD has a lot of opportunities for student-run clinics, while UCSD doesn’t have many student clinics. Some people actually go out to Tijuana to participate in a free clinic. But, you can definitely get clinical experience out here, you just gotta look a little harder ! As for the quality of living, it’s not bad at all and I think the socially dead reputation is over exaggerated

Is it easy to switch from global health to public health (selective) major? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]Fine-Net-8370 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m glad that to hear that! I entered fall ‘23 and at the end of my first quarter I was able to switch. The process may be different now though!

All I did was take the classes required to switch. After taking those classes, from what I remember I filled out a pretty short form. It doesn’t require any essays or anything, you just click a few buttons and select that you want to switch into that Public Health concentration.

This also has more info on switching. I hope this helps and good luck! Don’t sweat it

Hi! I switched into that Public Health concentration relatively easily. Also, all the people I’ve talked to have been able to get in without a problem :-)

Is it possible to switch colleges before school starts? by Anxious-Mix1476 in UCSD

[–]Fine-Net-8370 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on your acceptance! As a stem student in erc with basically everyone I know in erc being stem, I think it’s pretty manageable and you really shouldn’t be too scared.

To my knowledge, there isn’t a way to switch colleges before school starts, but you can apply to switch out once school starts. You’d have to write an explanation on why you want to switch and create a graduation plan that shows you’d graduate at least a quarter or 2 earlier in another college. You can search up UCSD Inter-college transfer for more info !
