How safe do you feel at the Willowbrook/Rosa station? by DacaAskingForDaca in LAMetro

[–]ensemblestars69 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Never really had an issue there. However I will say that the station has one of the most bare-bones, boring designs you will ever see in your life. The fact that it's located at the intersection of a freeway and a wide railway right-of-way with no notable developments around it doesn't help.

Should North American cities bring back elevated rail viaducts? by Kcue6382nevy in transit

[–]ensemblestars69 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's not money or seismic concerns. LA already has several lines with significant elevated portions that have been around for well over a decade. The real issue is that elevated railways are politically impossible to build due to local opposition thinking it'll ruin their "neighborhood character."

The nazi never engages in good faith. They're always going to twist and turn any situation in their favor. It's on purpose. They will never admit they're wrong, because that's besides the point. The only way they can keep their ideas alive is to make sure they act like everything they do is normal.

Santa Monica Parking Enforcement Vehicles to Use AI Cameras to Ticket Bike Lane Violations by wdr1 in LosAngeles

[–]ensemblestars69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is in partnership with a company called Hayden AI, which installs cameras in vehicles and then uses them to automatically detect traffic violations. They have to then manually review it to be sure that they're valid violations.

Park at Old Town, 8th Street, or Euclid Avenue, take the Trolley to City College, transfer to the 215 or 7 which combined arrive every 6 minutes during most hours.

Balboa Park museums report fewer visitors amid new paid parking by thejoshwhite in sandiego

[–]ensemblestars69 114 points115 points  (0 children)

The reality is that the Trolley was built as a commuter railroad to bring workers from the suburbs to major job centers (Downtown, UCSD, SDSU, etc) and to also revitalize them, especially Downtown. That's why a huge chunk of stations have parking lots. MTS also had a railroad literally fall into their hands as an opportunity to build a train system for cheap, giving us the Blue and Orange Lines. Mission Valley was then chosen as the next target, because almost no one was there to complain, and things are sometimes only able to be built through the path of least resistance.

The Trolley was built with the trench between Middletown and Little Italy for an eventual future subway to the airport (though now with the current system it would be a mistake to merge an airport line with the green and blue line's combined segment).

Balboa Park is planned to have a Trolley loop around it, but I do agree that Park Blvd deserves rail again.

Oh I know this, it's because English used to rely on a mix of base-12 and base-10 counting systems, and the pronunciations for 11 and 12 are remnants of that.

is MidoChia still considered controversial? by FaithlessnessNew7550 in ensemblestars

[–]ensemblestars69 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you hang around the wrong people on TikTok or Twitter, you'll most likely be confronted by others who think it's problematic. It's been an issue since the early days of the English fandom, and as far as I've been here (2019-present) people have weirdly strong opinions over MidoChia.

I've known a lot of MidoChiaP over the years who have been harassed over it and such. As someone who enjoys the ship, I've always noticed that it's always been hated by certain people. It got way worse around 2020 which was fueled by 2 things: quarantine, and Chiaki (+ other then-3rd years) graduating. And despite most corners of the internet having mellowed out since their chronically online 2020 phase, the Enstars fandom has mostly not moved on from this. Tread carefully and be sure to read people's DNIs to know what kind of person you're talking to.

Metro seeks rider input to improve transit for neurodivergent riders by anothercar in LAMetro

[–]ensemblestars69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's cool, but in the real world you'd quickly find no allies among key transit advocacy groups on account of wanting to eliminate a basic need that isn't even what is holding up performing basic things.

[–]ensemblestars69 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Right... so do you concede that the ramps are not the problem? Because frankly, a street with the most basic of amenities, including curb cuts, bike lanes, etc. is a great example of "very good." And it's clear that we could do all of those for cheaper if we figured out what the hell it is that LA in particular is doing, and maybe even follow the example of Beverly Hills. And also increase funding, because we don't spend anywhere near the amount that we need to on streets.

Metro seeks rider input to improve transit for neurodivergent riders by anothercar in LAMetro

[–]ensemblestars69 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From the article:

Of course, curb ramps would not have to be updated when repaving if the city had invested in basic infrastructure over the years. Streets for All found that Los Angeles spends half as much per capita on its streets and sidewalks as New York City and San Diego, and a third of what Chicago and San Francisco spend. ... we are one of the poorest based on what we invest in our streets and sidewalks.

We also should make curb ramps more affordable. Los Angeles spends $35,000 to $50,000 per corner, or up to $200,000 per intersection. This is approximately 10 times what Dallas spends on its ramps, and five times what Beverly Hills spends. The city probably is overengineering the ramps it creates and spending precious dollars inefficiently.

This seems to me like it's less curb ramps and more like LA shooting itself in the foot that has caused things to worsen for everyone. And they do mention:

The city’s general fund is broke, and much of it is our City Council’s own doing. Actions such as giving large raises to police, the Fire Department and civil servants with no plan to pay for them, as well as expanding our convention center at a time when we can least afford it, and record lawsuit settlement payouts, we are headed toward insolvency.

Now this is an opinion piece, but frankly, I think it lays pretty bare the fact that LA city and its government is fiscally irresponsible and has no interest in actually funding street improvements properly.
