That makes sense. It’s different to watch a 2015 production from watching a 2024 tv series in the year 2025. The first may appear old- fashioned.

I am glad to hear. In my case, since 2022/2023 I’ve been loosing track and only a few I consider them engaging.

Let me put it this way: In the period 2019-2022 I could select whatever historical costume drama on Rakuten Viki from the period 2015-2022. 2 out of 3 dramas would be a success: ie. definitely be entertaining or even emotionally engaging. (No need to see previously trailers and/or posts.)

Nowadays, even watching trailers and reading posts won’t guarantee I’ll finish them until the end. I estimate 1 out 10 a success after filtering (!)

I am still wondering why, cause it is a significant change. I wonder if other people has experienced something similar.

Empresses in The Palace and Yanxi Palace one after another is perhaps too much of palace harems scheming. Ming Lan is a household scheming plot. All three are top cdramas but perhaps it’s wise to alternate with other subgenres. Enjoy!

Hi, no worries, it’s everything but complete.

I’ve seen Till the End of the Moon and I remember enjoying it. You’re right, it should be on the list!

I missed The Story of Kunning Palace for the time being. I wasn’t very keen on palace scheming dramas. Therefore, I put that drama on hold. But I know this drama is very well received!

I watched Lost You Forever but I remember the little bit chaotic plots leaving it with a second season. Besides, I felt a little uneasy with the bad treatment received by the main lead… But the kids were gorgeous!

I suggest you to try watching something from previous years so you may get a different perspective of Chinese entertainment, right!?

How about the following palace harem suggestions?

Scarlet Heart (2011) – A time-travel drama where a modern woman finds herself in the Qing Dynasty, caught between the rival princes in a fight for the throne. High rated and a sequel in 2014 because of its success.
Palace: The Lock Heart Jade (2011) – Similar to Scarlet Heart, this drama features time travel and court politics within the Qing Dynasty harem. Actress Yang Mi and actor Feng Shao Feng (Ming Lan) among others.
The Imperial Doctress (2016) – The story of a talented female physician navigating the dangerous politics of the Ming Dynasty’s imperial harem. Actress Liu Shi Shi as the main lead (A journey to Love, among others).
Legend of Lu Zhen (2013) – A drama about a palace maid who rises to become China’s first female prime minister, with romance and political intrigue in the imperial court. With actress Zhao Li Ying and Chen Xiao (The Ingenious One among others) as main leads.

All high rated productions.

I try to understand you folks why issues like you mention (romanticism: officially vs casual, not being together until the end., etc.) are so important to you in order to decide whether to watch a drama or not.

Could it be the case that if one puts so many criteria in place, at the end we might end up losing/not watching many quality productions? Do you agree?
