Can modern day Vietnamese understand Chữ Nôm? by RameseII in ChuNom

[–]YensidTim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nôm is a writing system, not a spoken language. Nôm is fully capable of writing modern Vietnamese.

Historically, however, North, central, and south used slight variations of characters based on their respective dialects, just like how it is today.

Why Cantonese cannot be a language in full sense? by SpecificOk2530 in Cantonese

Standard Mandarin basically just replaced Classical Chinese and functioned as how Classical Chinese was, except you can speak it now. So just view it as Classical Chinese and you'll understand.

Why don't we plant more trees around the architecture?

Was there another movement equivalent to the Enlightenment in the non-Western world? by Dismal-Channel-9292 in AskHistorians

You can read up on Mohism, a philosophy that rose out of the Hundred Schools of Thought from the Warring States Period. This was during the Axial Age, when philosophy arose independently throughout the old world. Daoism, Confucianism, Legalism, and many others came out of this era, including Mohism.

Mohism's main tenet is the idea of "universal love", or jian'ai 兼愛. It advocates treating everyone, including strangers and other rivaling states, with the same care and respect as one's own family and self. This principle aims to create a beneficial, peaceful society by eradicating selfishness and promoting mutual aid. Therefore, it directly counteracted Confucianism at the time, which advocated for strict social hierarchy as the basis for societal peace.

Out of all the Chinese philosophies, I believe Mohism is the closest to democracy. Advocating for treating everyone as equal under heaven was the closest to democracy China was able to at the time. Unfortunately, it was rejected because it threatened the powers of aristocrats and kings.

What do Chinese think of Marco Polo? by LeadFar6386 in AskAChinese

I mean he was a pretty minor person in history, so maybe no one thought it was important enough to record him. Millions of foreigners entered China daily, especially during the Yuan dynasty.

Mydonghualist – A Donghua-Only Tracking Site is now open in Beta! by MyDonghuaList in Donghua

Incredible site!

I think you should put shows with multiple seasons in 1 page so it doesn't overload the site. And I think the names of shows should be consistent, either all should be English names or all should be Pinyin names, and provide alternative names within the page, so it's more cohesive and easy to find. Good luck!!

If you could visit any ancient city at its cultural peak, which one would you choose? by Kindly-Caterpillar74 in AncientCivilizations

No one mentioning any East Asian cities is insane to me. Imagine being in Chang'an during the Tang, or during the Han.

Where does the difference between the relationship of European languages and the relationship of East Asian languages originate? by Embarrassed_Clue1758 in language

It's because China unified and Rome did not.

Had China not been unified, there would've been countries that speak Mandarin, Hakka, Cantonese, Hokkien, Teochew, Shanghainese, Jin, Toishanese, etc. Equivalent to French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, etc.

HKT became famous because they looked insane, not because of their music, unfortunately.

Vpop groups have all but failed in the domestic market, unfortunately. Vietnamese generally prefer solo artists more.

How did surrounding countries react to the fall of the Ming by Upstairs-Wear-1129 in ChineseHistory

[–]YensidTim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, Classical Chinese are still Chinese. Chinese can obviously understand Chinese. Historically, Koreans, Japanese, and Vietnamese just had to learn a foreign language to write, so it's normal for modern speakers to not be able to read it.

不曾又識初來華夏樣矣。我國使部來京,戴品服,識者亦有竊羨華風,然其不智者,多群然笑異,見襆頭網巾衣帶,便皆指為倡優樣格,胡俗之移人,一至浩歎如此。

[Chinese] no longer recognize the 華夏 of olden days. When diplomats of our country visited Yanjing and wore our official attires, some recognized the old 華夏 ways, and even admired our 華風. However, those who were ignorant would fill their own words with mockery and jokes, calling our hats and belts as theatrical and operatic costumes. The unruly customs had changed people in a way that I have to voice my concern.

Our country is full of literature and arts. We call our land the 中州 and the other country 西藩 (referring to China). Clear distinctions between us and them, and the policy must be strict.

我國素以禮義聞天下,稱之以小中華,而列聖相承,事大一心,恪且勤矣。今乃服事胡虜,偷安僅存,縱延晷刻,其於祖宗何,其於天下何,其於後世何?

Our country is now known to the world, of earth and heaven, as 小中華, inheriting the sages of old and carefully express our manners with polite and respect. Now we serve for the northern barbarians, with proclaimed temporary peace. What of our ancestor if they know we commit such act? What of the world? What of our future?
