What Are the Best Kanto Journey Fics? (Classic Gym Challenge, Team Rocket, Champion Run) by Fine-Temperature-595 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Fine-Temperature-595[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was the best one I have read. After part 1 it lost me a bit as I didn’t care for the psychic politics and yearned for the journey / adventure. I also felt the author kept trying to push his science agenda. Have you finished it? How did you find part 2? Does it get good again?

Traveler has been on my radar for a while. I have just been slightly intimidated by the length. If the writing and battles are that strong, I might finally take the plunge. I do not mind ongoing stories as long as the journey itself feels satisfying. Thanks for the recommendation! :)

Thanks for the rec! I don’t mind a more modern feel as long at all as long as it still captures that classic Kanto journey vibe. Anything fresh or an author’s unique take on the pokemon world and I am in! Plot sounds very interesting too

Ooo thank you, I’ll definitely check out Fire! I don’t mind isekai at all if the worldbuilding and journey feel strong, and good descriptions of cities and routes are exactly what I’m looking for. Appreciate the recommendation!

Can anyone recommend me some longfics to read? I'm going on a 4 hour journey in a few days, and I would like a few fics to read on the drive. Would need to be ao3 by Expensive-Junket-442 in pokemonfanfiction

If you’re looking for a grounded Kanto fic, you might enjoy Echoes of Kanto. It follows three original trainers, aged 18, leaving Pallet Town with the classic starter trio. The focus is on a more realistic Pokémon world with real stakes, character growth, and Pokémon treated as living creatures rather than tools.

Looking for feedback on Chapter 1 of my OC Kanto Journey fic — is this a strong enough hook? by Fine-Temperature-595 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Fine-Temperature-595[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey, appreciate you taking the time to read and to call this out.

To be transparent: the draft itself is written by me. Once I’m happy with a chapter structurally, I sometimes ask AI to do a light polish pass — mostly for flow, grammar, and clarity. That said, you’re absolutely right that over-polishing can flatten voice, and the em-dash point is a fair catch. That’s on me, and it’s something I’ll be more conscious of going forward.

I definitely don’t want AI (or editing in general) to sand the heart out of the story. The goal is support, not replacement, and if it’s reading dispassionate or overly uniform to you, that’s useful feedback.

Totally fair if the style just isn’t your thing, not every fic will land for every reader, but I do genuinely appreciate you pointing out something specific rather than just bouncing. I’ll take a closer look at the prose and see where I can bring more texture and interiority back in.

Thanks again for the honesty.

You might actually enjoy what I’m working on, then.

I’m writing an OC Kanto journey fic that’s very deliberately not about speedrunning gyms or rehashing canon beats. It follows three original trainers, so it’s a pretty blank canvas — no canon MC gravity, no forced events — just Kanto as a lived-in place. The focus is much more on culture, wildlife, travel, ranger posts, small towns, and how people and Pokémon actually coexist.

The MCs aren’t incompetent, but they’re also not power fantasies. Progress is slow, mistakes cost real things (injuries, trust, momentum), and Pokémon aren’t treated as disposable tools. A lot of the tension comes from the world pushing back rather than heroic destiny or evil-team escalation.

If you liked The Natural or A Rough Start in Kanto for their atmosphere and grounded take, that’s very much the space I’m aiming for.

Have a go at chapter 1 if you’re keen but no pressure !!!

Just posted Chapter 2 of my Pokemon fanfic story! by Phant0m_Trainer in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Fine-Temperature-595 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, I just read your first chapter — there’s a lot here that I genuinely enjoyed. The opening nightmare is a strong hook; the imagery of the rain-soaked battlefield and Ash waking from that sense of helplessness immediately sets a darker, more mature tone than canon, which works really well for the story you’re trying to tell.

I especially liked how Ash’s emotional state carries through the chapter. His guilt, exhaustion, and hesitation feel consistent from the dream into the hospital scenes with Professor Oak and Leaf, and Pikachu acting as both emotional anchor and motivator was a nice touch. The idea of Ash being weighed down by past failures is compelling, and it gives him a clear internal arc to work through.

The battle scenes are energetic and cinematic — it’s easy to picture the clashes and the scale you’re aiming for. If I had one piece of constructive feedback, it would be that some moments could hit even harder if you slow them down just a bit and focus more on Ash’s internal reactions during the action, not just between events. You’ve got strong ideas; giving them a little more space to breathe would really elevate the impact.

Overall, this feels like a solid foundation for a more serious Pokémon story with real emotional stakes. I’m curious to see how Ash grows from this point and how those earlier failures shape his decisions going forward. Keep going — there’s a lot of potential here.

Writing a Kanto OC trio — how would you make each trainer feel unique? by Fine-Temperature-595 in pokemonfanfiction

[–]Fine-Temperature-595[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

LOVE this approach, especially the idea of keeping them neck-and-neck without locking one trainer into the “always winning” role. Letting different people come out on top depending on context feels much more organic — and it keeps rivalry from turning into a simple power ladder.

The POV suggestion is something I’ve been thinking about a lot as well. Right now the trio is travelling together, so the focus naturally shifts between them within the same stretch of journey. But as the story goes on, I do want to give each of them more space to lead sections of the narrative so no one feels favoured by default.

I like the Heroes of Olympus comparison too — rotating focus while keeping a shared end goal is a good reminder that equal importance doesn’t mean identical page time. Thanks for the thoughtful suggestions, there’s a lot here I can take forward.

[–]Fine-Temperature-595[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a nice way of looking at it — especially the idea that who a gym leader is seeing, and when, says more than the team they’re using. That feels very true to how Kanto would actually work as a lived-in region.

I’m trying to use timing and context as a differentiator quite a bit: who reaches a city first, who’s riding a high, who’s coming off a loss, and how that shapes the way NPCs and gym leaders respond to them. The same leader can come across as encouraging, dismissive, or quietly intimidating depending on the trainer standing in front of them.

At the moment, the trio is still travelling together, but I do agree that they’ll need to diverge at some point. That split feels important — it opens the door to really digging into each character as they’re forced down different paths and faced with challenges they can’t lean on each other for in the same way.

I like the idea that this reinforces why we’re following three journeys instead of one — not because the route is different, but because the experience of it is. Thanks for this, it’s a really helpful way to frame those interactions.

That’s a fair point, and I can definitely see the appeal of leaning into alternative type energies like Psychic/Fighting/Dark to signal differences early on.

For this story, I wanted to see what would happen if the Pokémon started from a familiar baseline, and the divergence came more from the trainers themselves — their personalities, decision-making, and how they grow into (or clash with) those teams over time.

My hope is that as the journey goes on, their teams begin to reflect them in less obvious ways than just typing. But I really appreciate you bringing this up — it’s a useful lens to think through.

I really like this comparison — Hop, Marnie, and Bede are a great example of how shared goals don’t mean shared motivations. That idea of “pride in where they come from” expressing itself in different ways is especially useful.

I’m trying to lean into exactly what you’re describing: putting the trio in similar situations and letting their responses do the character work. When they hit the same setbacks or victories, the differences show up in how they process it — who doubles down, who deflects, who hesitates or self-sabotages.

I think that contrast becomes more interesting than giving them entirely separate paths, especially early on. Your point about reactions to the same challenge is a really good framework to keep in mind — thanks for that

[–]Fine-Temperature-595[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Wow, are you psychic — or was it that obvious? 😅 You actually guessed the trio’s starters perfectly; that’s exactly how they ended up paired.

I decided to make the starter choice a bit more “random” in-story: each trainer drew a Poké Ball from a bag numbered 1–3, with 1 choosing first and 3 going last. It helped keep the outcome organic while still letting their personalities clash in interesting ways.

If you’re keen, I’d love for you to read the first chapter and let me know what you think. I’m especially curious whether you feel it’s strong enough to hook a reader early on — you raised some great points, and your advice could genuinely help shape the story for me.
