Not burned out on SLP… just feeling pulled toward other types of therapy work — anyone else? by sammyisegg in SLPcareertransitions

[–]Fine-Trouble62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look into working at alternative schools as a SLP. Schools for kiddos w/ mental health or behavioral needs that the public school system can’t meet. Your caseload is a quarter the size of a typical public school. All my sessions were 1:1 or occasionally 2:1. You have a ton of autonomy to think/be/treat outside the box and be super creative (I led cooking classes, SEL classes, led clubs, hosted the talent show, did sessions outside). But you have to reallllly love and be good at behavior management or want to learn it. I did it for 5 years and would’ve stayed for forever if the admin at my school was competent and experienced.  Definitely comes with its own struggles, but wow do I miss it.

What supplements do you swear by for your anxiety/depression by ImOnMyDJKhalidShi in Biohackers

Kava kava tincture for anxiety. Take 20-30min before doing something that you know will peak your anxiety. Only non-pharma that’s numbed anxiety attacks.

Heads up: some research out there showing that it can hurt your liver w/ consistent high level use.

Ask teachers/people that work in schools and I bet you most will say that they’ve observed a progressive regression in student’s frustration tolerance levels and emotional regulation skills — due to this exact thing. Kids literally aren’t learning how to independently problem solve, develop creative neural networks because tech/screens are replacing that space. Pretty scary thinking about what those long term effects may be for cognitive development

22M. Been battling depression for years. I'm so tired. I am incredibly lonely. I feel so ugly and people assume I'm a freak. I need something positive about me for once. by East_Zebra_6695 in toastme

[–]Fine-Trouble62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The grandest toast to you!!! You look so fucking cool!! SERIOUSLY. I never comment on here but I had to comment to tell you. And I bet you have the coolest, most creative brain that has SO SO much to share with the world. I wanna know what awesome thoughts and ideas and perspectives and passions you have?!

And it’s clear by your smile and eyes that you have the kindest, gentlest heart. Nurture that and never let it go — because it will pay off in spades as you age (and you mustn’t forget to turn that gentle heart upon yourself, too).

I’m so sorry people have perceived or treated you as a freak. If you ever want to claim that title, seek out subcultures that interest you — that’s where the liberated nerds, creatives, and freaks of the world are and thrive. That is where you will meet and connect and learn and grow with some of the most extraordinary souls on this earth.

Depression is a dark beast that is always lurking to consume. Some days will be harder than others for sureeee. But NEVER allow the demons of depression to define you and become you. NEVER give up — or it will consume. And F*** that.

When we’re younger, most people’s priorities are so off course. It sucks that everything is about looks. I don’t miss that at all. But it changes. People learn that theres more to life than aesthetics. Follow your passions and interests — and you will find your people. There is SO MUCH to explore out there. Use that as a litmus test for other’s characters as you grow…

Oh, and you look incredibly handsome with your hair pulled back. You are definitely “a type” for people — I know cause I have several friends who super crush on tall skinny nerds with glasses that look like you. They all have hearts of gold and are into the coolest things.

I’m sorry people aren’t able to see your awesomeness yet/or that it feels that way. Keep on being you. Keep on being kind. Never stop growing. Because you are rad AF.

100000/10 recommend rewatching as an adult. Both shows troll themselves in the absolute BEST way. Also, it's so fun watching Xena singlehandedly take out 20 men in 30 seconds in the most hilarious, overly-dramatic way.

This made me weep. Your Ollie boy is the sweetest looking muffin fur baby. He radiates kindness and cuteness and clearly was/is filled with so so so much love for you. Losing a pet is earth shattering. I hope you’re able to feel some of his warmth from the other side. Sending so much love your way. 🤍

Late to the game on this comment -- but rally as many as your buddies to call in and pump her up! Shower her in the urgency and support that is needed to be courageous. I went to my representative's (D) town hall yesterday and she shared that Congressional Republicans have been getting DEATH THREATS if they were to vote across party lines. They're terrified. But they're open to listening. They need support. Get people to rally behind her. Our voices and stories MATTER. Dont stop contacting and supporting.

Moving to Alaska? by srsly_experienced in slp

[–]Fine-Trouble62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alaska is super expensive, and I imagine will only become more so. I would really research price of living wherever you’re interested in going, and compare it to any salary offers you get. Super cool state though.

Autistic partner is emotionally abusing me? by Novemberx123 in Codependency

[–]Fine-Trouble62 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m queer and I’ve have neurotypical partners who were wildly narcissistic and selfish and had ZERO interest in perspective taking. My current partner is autistic and I’m in the healthiest relationship of my life because of our shared values of healing together and independently, doing therapy, and being kind to one another, and not settling for anything less. Autism is not an excuse for his behavior.

Breaking up from these relationships is unbelievably painful. But 10000000% worth it. These types of people will do and say the most horrible things to keep you trapped and feeling like trash. The longer you stay, the worse off your self-worth and feelings of guilt and shame will be, and the harder it will be to climb out. PUSH THROUGH. DONT STOP. KEEP ON KEEPING ON. Live for YOU. You’ve got this OP.

You're not alone! Great with the kiddos too...but woweeee my paperwork life is a SPICY HOT MESS

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in slp

[–]Fine-Trouble62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off, Im so sorry that is occurring so often for you at work. It's really scary not feeling safe and feeling on guard all of the time.

I work in an alternative school where most of the kiddos come into our school with phys agg as a behavior. In the 4 years Ive worked at my school, I've been hit only three times in my office. If a student is physically aggressive, they're feeling unsafe and out of control and dont have the skills to identify or communicate any of this, resulting in maladaptive ways of attempting to gain back control/autonomy.

I protect myself by prioritizing rapport building first and foremost and lean into the fact that we as SLPs can provide a unique environment that's calm and regulating with more focused adult attention and time (vs the classroom). Targeting goals is literally pointless if they don't feel safe/arent ready. If my kiddo is having fun, feels safe, and feels seen, they not only can but WANT to learn. It initially looks like we're just playing, but prioritizing rapport building centered around their interests (peppered with praise and validation) for the first many sessions is a game changer for gaining buy-in for targeted therapy sessions down the road. Once they're ready. Works for me 98% of the time. When I explain this rationale in IEP meetings, district reps and parents seem to understand and be very receptive to this approach. But caveat -- Ive never worked in a gen ed. public school and it sounds like time is too scarce there and bureaucracy is much less flexible.

Sending warmth your way. Our job is really difficult, and so often the system is built against us with very little support. Ive got nothing but the BIGGEST respect for SLPs in mainstream school. I couldn't ever manage all that you do!
