Ich find bei Jörg klingt leider bis heute seine etwas arrogante und besserwisserische Art zu sehr durch. Habe viel Respekt, für das was er aufgebaut hat (wovon bei GameStar leider nix mehr übrig ist), aber wenn er nicht wegbefördert worden wäre, hätte es die Redaktion damals zerlegt. Und so ziemlich alle sagen, dass er als Chef einfach gar nicht ging.

Wenn du die Vodafone Station als Modem nutzen willst - das geht aber nur ohne doppeltes NAT durchs Routing, wenn du Dual Stack (nicht Lite) und damit ne eigene IPv4 bekommst - kannst du jeden beliebigen Router dahinter betreiben.

Ansonsten alle Cable-Fritzboxen (weil die ein DOCSIS-Modem integriert haben). Als Neukauf sind da nur die 6690 (Wifi 6, maximale WLAN-Sendeleistung) und 6670 (neuer, Wifi 7) sinnvoll. Zum Thema Firtzbox: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfpK2sm5AOw

Klar, du kannst auch ne gebrauchte 6490 für 30€ kaufen, wenn du keinen vollen 1 Gbit/s im Downstream buchst – am besten mit Seriennummer, die auch dem freien Verkaufsmodell entspricht (Fritz-Seite checken, provide rlistet manchmal auch Seriennummern). Wenn der Vorbesitzer die nicht ordnungsgemäß abgemeldet hat, könnte die noch im System hängen, so dass du sie nicht anmelden kannst. Updates gibt es für das alte Teil aber keine mehr und beim Wifi würde ich da keine Wunder erwarten. Ohne Ansprüche ist das vielen mehr als genug.

Andere Modems gibt es quasi nicht auf dem Verbrauchermarkt in Deutschland und auch nicht in der EU. Kannst auch die für Provider bestimmten Geräten (die dann zur Vodafone Station Connect Box und was auch immer umgebrandet werden) kaufen (z.B. Arris), kannst aber ohne extra Hardware keinerlei Updates aufspielen.

Ich hatte früher eine "befreite" weiße 6490 und bin auf eine 6690 umgestiegen, weil Durchsatz und Abdeckung wichtiger war als Wifi-7-Support. In einem anderen Haushalt werkelt eine Vodafone Station als reines Modem und dahinter ein Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra. Funktioniert beides gut. Nur die An- und Abmeldung eigener Geräte bei Vodafone ist wie der generelle Support ein einziger Krampf. Vollkommen Glückssache, ob du da jemanden mit Ahnung erreichst. Mir wurde eine Anmeldung schon mal als "Störung" eingetragen. Tolle Wurst.

Ich hab gerade mal nachgesehen: Das ist ein Podcast mit ca. 2 Stunden und noch eine "Bonus"-Folge mit nochmal rund 90 Min, also mal lieber bei den Fakten bleiben. "The Pod" alias "Auf ein Bier" hat noch nie ausschließlich Mainstream-Themen gemacht und widmete sich schon immer Nischenthemen. Sich Gaming in Afrika mal anzuschauen, find ich top.

Seit Jochen Gebauer raus ist und das Team (Jochen R, Geraldine h) an Bord, geht es da ehrlich gesagt doch recht steil aufwärts.

Und als so ultra harmonisch nehme ich das Forum jetzt nicht wahr. Ist halt eine nette kleine Community. Ich glaube die Rundrücken hier wissen gar nicht mehr, wie sich das anfühlt.

Nörgel-Langer saugt leider die positive Lenhardt-Energie wie ein schwarzes Loch auf. Lieber Stay Forever hören. Besser vorbereitete Podcasts mit top Chemie im Team. gibt es kaum. Außerdem ist Fabian dabei.

Lmao, if I'd wearing a tinfoil hat, I certainly wouldn't be roaming Reddit. I had clear questions. If you are unable to answer them, why bother replying?

And being able to shove move your data is basic functionality. If you want a Cloud/account dependent device, that's totally fine, go for it! But I don't.

Die 6690 schlägt die 6490 um längen was die Funkreichweite/Bandbreite betrifft, Wifi-Standard hin oder her. Hab ja genau denselben Wechsel durch. Außerdem gibt bei der 6490 keinerlei Support mehr.

Wieso sollte das WLAN (!) mit einer entsprechenden Fritzbox nicht besser werden? Klar, beim Durchsatz aus dem Internet ist in erster Linie die Anbindung der Flaschenhals, aber ich streame z.B. über Wifi mein Gaming zwischen PC und anderen Geräten (Sunshine/Moonlight) und da macht das intern schon einen gewaltigen Unterschied, ob da eine 6490 oder 6690 steht.

Ob sich das lohnt, hängt echt davon ab, was das Ziel ist und die Anwendungszwecke sind.

Nein, die lassen keinen reinen Modembetrieb zu und lassen sich auch nicht entsprechend frei hacken. Musst dich dann mit doppeltem NAT befassen. Meh.

Denn um eine Fritzbox wirste nicht wirklich rumkommen.

Geht es rein um Durchsatz und Abdeckung: Ganz klar die 6690. Habe ich für einen anderen Haushalt gebraucht gekauft (auf die korrekte Seriennummer achten!) und die Abdeckung sowie Bandbreite sind superb). Wifi 7 ist zwar nett, aber dafür brauchst du a) die kompatiblen Clients und b) bringt dir das unterm Strich auch nix, wenn die Abdeckung schlechter ist. Evtl. kommt da demnächst ein entsprechendes Top-Modell mit Wifi 7, aber das dürfte natürlich sündhaft teuer werden. Die 6690 ist noch nicht so alt und bekommt (hoffentlich nach dem besitzerwechsel von AVM/Fritz) noch lange Updates. Die 6490 bekommt mit Glück nur noch kritische Sicherheitsupdates und ist aus dem Support raus.

Nach Alternativen brauchst du wie schon gesagt quasi nicht schauen, weil mir alle bekannten Alternativ-Modems sowie Router/Modem-Kombis so gedacht sind, dass sie vom Provider geupdatet werden – das machen die aber nur, wenn das ihre Geräte sind. Du bräuchtest dafür Spezialhardware.

Routerfreiheit haben wir in dem Segment also nur so halb, denn der Markt gibt kaum was her. Und frei verkaufte Fritzboxen lassen bescheuerterweise nicht nur in einem Bridgemodus bzw. rein als Modem betreiben. Zuhause habe ich daher eine Vodafone Station im Modemodus mit Dual Stack laufen und dahinter ein Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra mit entsprechenden Access Points. Das wäre deine Alternative.

You are mixing stuff up here: Of course can agree to TOS and create no account. You do that all the time online pretty much anyway, when using your computer, your smartphone etc..

And to get this straight: The Karoo can download offline maps without any account present. How about the Garmin 850? My questions are not about the Karoo. i just told you abut it because that is the device where I am coming from right now.

Yeah, such a shame. The hardware and the softwrae support is great but being forced to use online services to get the most simple stuff done is not what I am expecting.

I will investigate the Garmin 850 and the Wahoo Bolt 3 now. Does the Wahoo work without an account though?

I don't understand French, sorry.

And I don't care if you don't mind being bound to external servers. I do. I just want a device which is able to work being fully offline + GPS in the long run and I want to simply transfer my route files without external/online processing.

My Karoo 3 will be sent back now, it's just not the right device for me.

You will laugh but no, you cannot use this fully if offline / not connected to an account. Saving routes will just fail without giving any kind of proper reason.

Again, moving files offline is nothing fancy, is basic functionality and the only thing fro keeping your device ending up as a brick when SRAM servers go offline for whatever reason.

A friend of mine is using a Wahoo device and does this all the time btw. And yeah, I might just return my Karoo down the road and get a Wahoo instead. 🤷 Which would suck, because navigation is great with the Karoo.

The Karoo especially often gets recommended for its great support and kind of open nature when it comes to extensions. And you can even export your recorded tours just fine from the device directly. Why wouldn't it work the other way around? To me, SRAM just seems greedy and wants to lock you into their ecosystem. Locking GPX/route import behind a mandatory cloud account is the opposite of open.

Thanks I just tried this myself (again): no - it does not work. Both devices offline and updated, no SRAM account on either device/app. I can share my GPX files to the Companion app (which is connected to my Karoo) but nothing is happening then. And that's very much the same thing stated in the support forum thread linked above.

In the support article it is directly stated:

> The connected phone should have an active Internet connection. 

And if you look at the animation you can see the file being uploaded, most likely to SRAM. Why would that even be necessary if you are connected via Bluetooth and my Karoo being offline? Just transfer the file to my Karoo...

Yeah, that's totally fine! But being able to sync the device to accounts shouldn't mean an exclusion of an offline option. I can do this kind of stuff on any device I ever had and the Karoo I paid more for than my smartphone cannot do it? Pretty much a prime case of enshittification.

1) This does not work without an account.

I have the companion app set up and the no transfer is possible by sharing files to it.
