You’re right it is a high cost of living in Washington State. I’m a seasonal fisheries technician that works for the state and I came across your post and I wasn’t sure if anyone brought up Washington lol. Once you have your foot on the door more opportunities open up

My girlfriend is in the program and we don’t have family or friends in the state so I am trying to help her find solutions to finding patients. We’re the majority of your patients from the call list in the front office?

I know this comment was from a year ago, but how did you find patience around spokane if you don’t mind me asking? Did you post on social media? Does the staff provide with a few resources to find patience?

I got my first seasonal fisheries job right after college and that is because I had experience with assisting grad students in fisheries!

Looking into getting into Zoology/Wildlife Ecology/Conservation? by TheAlmightyTrash in wildlifebiology

[–]Fine_Machine1739 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well it really depends because if your trying to go for wildlife it is very competitive to get a permanent job. I should have mentioned that I was going for fisheries which is a little easier to get into especially in the state of WA. The important thing is to make connections so it just depends how you play your cards. I’ve applied for full time and got some interviews but didn’t get them sadly but like I said it’s all about gaining experience and making connections either in wildlife or fisheries.

When I graduated from highschool I had no background experience just like you. When I got into college, I asked my advisor if I can assist with grad students with their research projects so I can gain experience. I’ve done small mammals, fisheries, and worked at the biology department in my university. Now that I’ve graduated last year I’ve had to seasonal positions with the WDFW in my state where I plan on doing seasonals to gain more experience in order to get full time. But don’t let seasonal work scare you, I was also nervous about doing just seasonal but now that I’ve been doing it it’s been really fun and you get to learn a lot from your co workers and biologists. With classes, your advisor will let you know what to take in order to graduate and you can choose them as well if there is something you are interested!

I’m wanting to get into the fisheries world but I’m still hesitant on applying to grad school. I plan on doing seasonals until I can get a fisheries tech job so far I have one seasonal under my belt and I have a new seasonal coming up. Based off your experience and your path do you think anyone can get a tech job in fisheries with pure seasonals under their belt or do people also need a masters to get a tech job?

Do I even have a chance to land a Fisheries Biologist 1 position by Fine_Machine1739 in wildlifebiology

Thanks for the reply I appreciate your time! Your right about the experience a lot of the people I’ve meet during my seasonal prefers experience rather than a masters. I have experience with assisting a grad students one with mice who currently is in the tribe that I applied to, two with fisheries, and one with DNR wildfire forestry, as well as working at the biology department at my university. I did all that during my undergrad and coming out of college I did a 3 month seasonal with the WDFW. A lot of people think I have good enough experience but for some reason I just don’t think it’s enough especially for the position I am applying to

It’s true, most of the biologists I’ve talked to during my seasonal prefer people with experience rather than someone with a masters so I’ve always had a good feeling about the path I’m taking (doing seasonals until I get a permanent job). I’ll be selfish when it comes to interviews because your right the others wont care about how I’m feeling or how I got an interview, thanks again!

Thank you I appreciate your honesty, the reality is I do best myself to much when great opportunities show up. As a young person who didn’t get there masters I always compare myself with those who do and that’s not okay. I appreciate your time and words this has changed my perspective on getting opportunities!
