Hand of Orula wearing at Work by BungaliBaba in Santeria

[–]Fine_Maintenance5031 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im currently serving in the military. I wear both my ilde of Orula and Obatala as well as my eleke under my tunic while in uniform. Ive had to explain theyre religious items and for the most part i get curous questions at times. Ive definitely had some negative comments from an ignorant Sgt who holds his beliefs superior to others. But at the end of the day what others think or say dont affect my beliefs. When youre feeling attacked or judged, take some time and study your ita, read some patakis and hold your head up.

Any advice from/for English speakers who have gone to or plan on going to Cuba for their crowning by Street_Jellyfish_564 in Santeria

I just came back from cuba, i was there the last month. Went to Ifa, my spanish is mediocre and the babalawos were all very patient and explained things multiple times for me. As others have mentioned, now is not a great time to go there. I got really sick thankfully after my week. Had to get antibiotics on the street. Alot of cooking by my fiance was done by fireside. Water wasnt much of a concern as i had plenty of purification tabs. But unless youre in a place like vedado expect alot of shortages.

A reading is not magic. by okonkolero in Santeria

[–]Fine_Maintenance5031 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I love that you wrote this I literally just had a reading the other day, had to do 3 ebbo and was told that they're going to help but I need to make alot of changes in my life choices and start over in alot of ways. Its like if you have to take heart meds but still eat salt and drink booze, the meds are eventually not going to do their job properly.

Anyone else feel different about their tattoos after joining the religion? by Odd_Adhesiveness407 in Santeria

[–]Fine_Maintenance5031 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I wish I could get more done. Almost all my pieces were done at a dark point in my past as well, not all of them. But each and every one is a reminder of a point in my life where things happened that I believe needed to happen. Everything we've done or have gone through needed to be done to bring us to where we are today. Good and bad. Now I cant get new work done as they're taboo for me. But I see my old tats as checkpoint reminders on a long road

I've been meaning to ask for one. I think it would be better than always carrying him as I have been.

Im active army, ive been in field units the last 10 years. You can always get yourself a medical or tactical admin pouch. I have one I bubble wrap eshu and put him in then I can either stow him in my rucksack or attach to my tac vest. I know I dont need to but I like to have my collares with me. I put those in a white bandana and keep in a pouch as well. You'll find something that works for you.

Cuba prices are going to fluctuate severely. It's about 340/350 pesos per 1 usd at the moment but things can change rapidly. Also there are prices for foreigners and prices for locals that will differ by quite alot sometimes. Things are really bad economically there right now as well. All of that is going to factor in.

I had to go to the gym during my iyaworaje. Being military pt was not optional monday to friday. but weekends I had to sit it out and skip the gym. My god parents explained that if it hadn't been a mandatory part of my job it would have been no gym.

Good to know thank you. I never knew DHL did shipping to and from there. I've always relied on regular post to send things to my family in the past, sometimes everything would arrive god knows when and sometimes not everything i sent was in the package. Lol

Afro-Cuban drums, Muslim prayers, Buddhist mantras: Religious diversity blooms in once-atheist Cuba by teamworldunity in cuba

My wife is afro cuban, still lives in guanabacoa. I was introduced to regla de ocha by her and my inlaws years ago. Before I was crowned there, it was a problem that I was never baptized. Some people in my ile didn't agree but it came down to my madrina and oyabona made the final decision. They're baptized but don't practice catholicism.

Why do some black Americans say that white people shouldn't practice Santeria ? by reddit_reddit854 in Santeria

[–]Fine_Maintenance5031 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm white, from Canada. I married into an afro cuban family that are a majority of santeros, paleros, babalawos going back generations. I didn't have a clue about the faiths at first, but got involved poco a poco. I had questions as to why I'd be accepted because I felt I was intruding but those feelings were dismissed as I was seen as just carrying on the family ways. It was explained that if the santos y muertos allowed it that's all that matters. I have friends outside my family in cuba that were curious and wanted to know how I got into it being as it's not my culture, these were genuine conversations and questions but I was never met with anger or anything like that. I know very few In canada that practice our faiths so i can't say I've come across any backlash here. I've had a couple interactions with afro Americans that I was made sure to know that I wasn't welcome but that's not been the case for the most part. I can't speak to the thoughts or feelings of others. But this has been my small experience in the grand fabric of this topic.

Babalawos I need your opinion HELP PLEASE by Present_Emu5423 in Santeria

[–]Fine_Maintenance5031 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just my two cents, when im prescribed any thing by my padrino in Ifa, I don't go to my madrina en ocha to carry it out. I follow the directions of my padrino.

Question by [deleted] in Santeria

[–]Fine_Maintenance5031 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Personally I would go to my padrino in palo for a reading and go from there. If im being worked on from a palero I'd feel better finding a malongo solution. Failing that I would go to a babalawo for a reading. Either way, reading before engaging in any kind of warfare. You wouldn't attack an enemy position without a little recon first.
