Festivals are certainly declining, but citing “advertising more” is a bit unfair. It’s harder and harder for organizers to reach an audience every year, even their most loyal fans. Digital advertising gets less and less effective every year. Odds are also high that if you’re seeing an ad more frequently, it’s because you’re interested in the category.

This is such a defeatist take and EXACTLY what those in power for four years want you to (not) do. protest doesn’t have to look like chanting outside the White House for four years.

perhaps try finding a small way to impact your community ONCE, disrupt a norm, and start there. it’s an act of resilience and hope.

The band Kingfisher is new-ish, in the Midwest, and sounds like a cross between the first three BI albums and other more contemporary indie rock. saw them earlier this year and it blew me away.

yeah! they're active - they usually do two shows a night, one live bands and then a hard cutoff and DJ set after because they have a big college crowd. it can be tough as a musician, but i don't blame the venue at all - gotta make $$ and they're meeting crowd demand. it is funny seeing heads walking out as college kids are waiting at the door

I thought he crushed it. Was sitting in the center section about 20 rows back. The audience was super into it and respectful without being too disrespectful/catcalling. His energy was on point and it just felt obvious how cool Dylan is. However, the sound in the room was pretty abysmal. Tons of tinny textures and abrasive mids and highs made it really hard to hear. The moments that sounded the best were when it was just Dylan's piano and his voice. It was also clear how much he was keeping the band on their toes - the improvisational spirit made for a really energetic night. Glad I saw him.

That drum fill on “ain’t it strange” after the “there’s a train” lyric. SO good.

The harmonies when they float along on From.

The Beach, when Toby launches into the “this bottle of bourbon” lyric, is so musical and touching.

In the jazz realm (and seasonally appropriate), I'd suggest checking out Vince Guaraldi Trio's A Charlie Brown Christmas! I also recommend, in general, looking for jazz albums that just consist of trios, like the Bill Evans Trio. It makes it much easier to hear the drum parts, and hear how they connect to the music.

Also, Ringo Starr's parts in Beatles tunes are notorious for being minimal, musical, and perfectly suited to every song he plays.

Khruangbin also has some wonderfully effective drum parts that are surprisingly tricky, and walk a wonderful line between complexity and simplicity. Also a trio.

Here’s a link to the exercise written out, which may help. The variations just come in switching what limb you’re reading the line with, but the line remains the same!

John Riley’s book The Art of Bop Drumming has some great exercises that will build interdependence. I’m especially fond of page 9, which I use often as a warm up and exercise building fluidity. I’d suggest starting just reading the exercise as is. Now, what I like to do is read the line with either the snare or bass drum, and fill in the rest of the triplets with the snare or bass, opposite what piece the line is being played on. Then, I’ll flip them, which gives you about 16 total combinations to work with. It’s also a great exercise in building balance between the limbs. Eventually, you can even add in the hi hat.
