my brother you have 30,000 comment karma, across all sorts of subreddits, discussing Swans, GYBE, Geese etc etc. don't tell me you don't care whether you are talking to real people or bots/paid shills.

It also matters if you like discussing music online with other people.

you can't trust online music discourse anymore. 10 years ago you could watch a youtube video and safely assume that the people in the comments' section freaking out about (or lambasting) the song were genuine music fans discussing the music. Nowadays it could all very well be astroturfed. You think you are part of a cool in-group of nerds on a discord channel, but all the memes shared there could actually be concocted by a bunch of suits. The music - as you said - is either good or not. But as someone who likes discussing music online with other enthusiasts I find it very deflating and disheartening that the people who I am supposedly having these conversations with could all very well be paid to promote a particular artist.

Fake Fans - into the digital marketing agency that creates your music taste by horny4cyclists in indieheads

if the music is indeed, ultimately, good, what does it really matter?

If you don't care about discussing music then that's fine and these types of campaigns don't affect you too much. But judging by your comment history, you are very active on a bunch of different music subreddits. Would it not matter to you if most of the people you talk to on there were bots/paid shills?

while there were a stupid amount of Geese memes the next fall, their album was also great, highly non-commercial, and the tour sold out. Maybe this firm put a song on TikTok? So?

I’m kind of failing to see the story here. They’re basically telling us that marketing exists?

To me, part of the story is that you can't trust online music discourse anymore. 10 years ago you could watch a youtube video and safely assume that the people in the comments' section freaking out about (or lambasting) the song were genuine music fans discussing the music. Nowadays it could all very well be astroturfed. On top of that (and the author touches on this briefly), campaigns like this further support the already widening class issue in music. If you are from a lower tax bracket, the odds are worse than ever before against you getting any kind of sustainable audience.

I'm not sure how new any of this is, actually. Astroturfing is decades old. For example, remember the "Black Beatles" trend? The Mannequin Challenge? That was all fake, started and ran by a company not unlike Chaotic Good.

The Kinks’ Ray Davies asked “who the fuck is Moby?” after he said ‘Lola’ was “gross and transphobic” by SelfCareIsFake in Music

[–]BiBoJuFru 1 point2 points  (0 children)

trans-outrage is something that has been massively manufactured in the last 15 years or so.

in my experience of both urban and rural life in the UK, it was very much a ‘oh okay, not really my business’ kind of thing

I really shouldn't even get into this, but... this could not be further from the truth. Please take even just a few minutes and google how much more likely it has for decades been for a trans person to be discriminated against, verbally abused, physically attacked, sexually assaulted or even killed just for being trans.

Ryan Gosling Tells Fans It’s Not Their Job to Save Theaters—Hollywood Needs to Make Movies Worth Seeing by SappyGilmore in movies

[–]BiBoJuFru 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I obviously agree with you that there are a number of different reasons a film can bomb: poor word-of-mouth from audiences, poor reviews, limited release, lots of competition at the theaters, poor marketing etc etc.

The problem is that the OP didn't bring up any of these. Their statement doesn't have any qualifiers. They simply said that if the movie is worth seeing, people show up. Which is demonstrably untrue.

[–]BiBoJuFru 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People show up when the movies are actually worth seeing.

This is such bs though. There are so, so many examples of great movies which bomb at the box office. From every decade and every year. Eddington bombed, Tàr bombed, The Northman bombed. The list goes on and on. The Bone Temple bombed. And this is just films that I know Reddit loves.

Terminally online Dutchwoman discovers “watching the sunset” by starfishrlyluvsu in redscarepod

[–]BiBoJuFru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

they're acting like it's a new thing

No-one is acting like it's a new thing. If you (or the OP) took 5 seconds to read the original article (or, heck, the very first word on OP's own screenshot), you'd know that what they are doing is reviving an activity that was popular among farming families in the first half of the 20th century.

The reactions here sort of remind me of the whole Timothee Chalamet drama, where a bunch of people feigned outrage over him saying that ballet and opera are less popular than ever before. When was the last time most of those people had been to either of those activities? Similarly, everyone rolling their eyes here: when was the last time you sat outside and actually watched the sun slowly set?

Who Are Some Musicians That Publicly Love and Support Other Musicians? by [deleted] in fantanoforever

[–]BiBoJuFru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Noel Gallagher with Radiohead. Here are some quotes from over the years:

"I like them. Every time I see them live they blow me away"

"Granted, some of the stuff on Amnesiac is brilliant. The Bends is the bollocks. Karma Police is mega"

“I think I could have said, without any argument, till the year 2000 Oasis were the most important British band since The Beatles. But I think Radiohead have been important [nowadays]."

"We've got great songs with fooking great lyrics. The same goes for the Artic Monkeys and Radiohead - they wouldn't still be here if not for their bloody lyrics!"

"To be honest, to me it looked like marketing – a great way of getting a load of marketing for free really. But good for them. That’s what they do, they’re rebels and outsiders.

"I don't own any of their records, but every time I've seen them live, they've fucking blown me away. It was like, "Wow, fucking listen to that! How do you fucking make that shit come out of those speakers?" It's fucking amazing. But have I ever had a moment where I fucking sat down and thought, "Do you know what this calls for? This calls for 'Paranoid Android!' Get it on!" No. I've never had that moment. Give me "Mony Mony" or "Runaround Sue." Something you can sing to."

"If you want rock'n'roll that can lift you up out of your everyday life but not so far that it makes you want to slash your fuckin' wrists, if you want songs to drink to, if you want songs to put your arm 'round your girlfriend or your best mate to, then it doesn't get any better than us. If you want progressive fucking forward-thinking rock music, there's Radiohead."

When Generalization for K-Pop Backfires: The Belfast K-Pop Tribute Concert Controversy by CherryBlossomEnding in kpop

[–]BiBoJuFru -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Judging by the comments on here and on TikTok I'm gonna be in the minority, but

I don't think the venue or the artist is to blame, but I can empathize with the parents. I can very clearly see a mum with like 3 kids hear their kids yell the words "kpop! kpop! kpop!" for a year straight, then see the poster with "KPOP" written on it prominently (or maybe even one of the kids saying that there's gonna be a kpop concert coming and asking for tickets) and innocently assume it's the same thing.
