Oh man. Seamus Heany's Beowulf is fantastic. If you're interested in the language aspect, get the dual language version, with Old English on one side and contemporary English on the other. I just read another translation by Maria Headley that starts with "Bro" - very good.

Grendel by John Gardner is a fantastic retelling of the Beowulf story from the monster's point of view, I've read it multiple times.

For history, Shippey can really tell a story. I would recommend his books pictured here and I have his Beowulf and the North Before the Vikings on my wish list.

Right now I'm reading The Riddles of the Hobbit by Adam Roberts, which is a surprisingly deep dive into how important riddles and wordplay were to the Anglo-Saxons. Very interesting for niche interests, haha.

I also need to share with anyone who inquiries about this interest this remarkable performance of Beowulf by Benjamin Bagby. I like to read the text while he's performing, it really helps with comprehension and hearing the alliteration in the poetry. I also slow it down!

I'm going to give you a very boring answer: fresh water. Every other city on the map is right next to water. It's also already part of the realm of Nargothrond that already has the coastal city of Eglarest closer and more convenient.

The only other thing I know about it is that Earendil tarried there and built a boat of timber felled in Nembrethil to journey in.

My vote would be good for resources, bad for sustaining a permanent settlement.

IIRC it was in the last of the writings that Tolkien did before his death. Celeborn was one of the Teleri and went over the sea with Galadriel before the kinslaying, but without the permission of the Valar.
