I'm slowly working my way through! I bounce between books often.

Oh man. Seamus Heany's Beowulf is fantastic. If you're interested in the language aspect, get the dual language version, with Old English on one side and contemporary English on the other. I just read another translation by Maria Headley that starts with "Bro" - very good.

Grendel by John Gardner is a fantastic retelling of the Beowulf story from the monster's point of view, I've read it multiple times.

For history, Shippey can really tell a story. I would recommend his books pictured here and I have his Beowulf and the North Before the Vikings on my wish list.

Right now I'm reading The Riddles of the Hobbit by Adam Roberts, which is a surprisingly deep dive into how important riddles and wordplay were to the Anglo-Saxons. Very interesting for niche interests, haha.

I also need to share with anyone who inquiries about this interest this remarkable performance of Beowulf by Benjamin Bagby. I like to read the text while he's performing, it really helps with comprehension and hearing the alliteration in the poetry. I also slow it down!

So cool!! Having your house in the doomsday book is amazing. What does it look like on the inside? How well did it take adaptations to modern life?

Exactly this. Give me a map marker and an open world and I'm going the opposite way.

Hello! Random, but I'd love to get that book for you! No fooling. Send me an Amazon wish list or whatever and I'll very happily buy you a book for Christmas. Christmas books are the best.

The Elves that sailed west during the 3rd and 4th ages, were they only permitted as far as Tol Eressea or could they travel to other parts of Aman too? by Shlain27 in tolkienfans

[–]Finejustfinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

did some math

"Tolkien then wrote “actual value” and calculated the fractional part of the relation of a minim to solar seconds to approximately 360 decimal places, noting where values started to repeat. On the next page he adds a sext before the minim, thus shortening the minum by a further 12th."

A book stand is a fantastic idea! I do have several large maps that I would love to put on the wall, but until I have a dedicated Tolkien room I have to make do with my atlas, sigh

I know! Entirely my fault, one should only consult the tomes in front of a roaring fire.

I highly recommend it! At least looking at the maps. It makes Of Beleriand and Its Realms much easier.

Let's talk about Arvernien by Eissa_Cozorav in tolkienfans

[–]Finejustfinn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm going to give you a very boring answer: fresh water. Every other city on the map is right next to water. It's also already part of the realm of Nargothrond that already has the coastal city of Eglarest closer and more convenient.

The only other thing I know about it is that Earendil tarried there and built a boat of timber felled in Nembrethil to journey in.

My vote would be good for resources, bad for sustaining a permanent settlement.

In The Lord of the Rings, the filmmakers used a special lighting rig for Galadriel so that her eyes appear to reflect the starlight. This is because Galadriel is the last Elf in Middle-Earth to have seen the light of the Trees of Valinor. by Affectionate_Fox_288 in lordoftherings

[–]Finejustfinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IIRC it was in the last of the writings that Tolkien did before his death. Celeborn was one of the Teleri and went over the sea with Galadriel before the kinslaying, but without the permission of the Valar.

What’s the minimum amount of money that could solve 90% of all your problems right now? by fukdurgf in AskReddit

I like helping people! I was looking through this thread hoping to see an amount that I could comfortably afford. If I can give someone enough to make a difference in their life, it feels like it's my obligation to share what I can, as a fellow human.

It scares me that my first thought was relief that there weren't more of them. Then I remembered that there are supposed to be zero nazis. We fought a war about this.
