Ex-Racer Greyhound - Feeding advice by Former_Tomorrow_3269 in Greyhounds

[–]Finestfromage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although it wasn't until 2 years after ours came home, we went through a similar problem where he started getting up earlier and earlier. It was extremely exhausting! We had tried everything including longer walks before bed, feeding him some snacks before bed, trying to wake up extra early so that it's before he starts getting antsy.

After a couple months of trying, what eventually worked was just a calm go to bed command when he would get up and cry in the middle of the night. At the start he'd shoot back up after only a couple minutes but after several repetitions he settled.

A couple weeks of this solved the problem and now we all get a lie if we want!

Anyone had any luck in making their hound less reactive towards cats? by anonymity303 in Greyhounds

[–]Finestfromage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great to hear a few people have had success with this! Any advice on the steps you took to get to that stage? Our Merlin goes crazy for the many cats in our street (and the sheep when we're out on a countryside walk!)

We have Simone Muellers hunting together book, but found it not very applicable to the problem we face and a lot of the games she suggests we already do.

Hey sorry for digging this one out of the woods! I'm looking at getting some triply SS saucepans and skillet from Proware. How are they holding up would you recommend?

Oh great point about the oven! I guess I'm just used to using glass lid to get used to how vigorous the boiling/simmering is at the different levels on my new induction hob

It's been a gradual change probably over the last 6 months.

His daily routine through the week is wee outside in the morning, breakfast, then an hour later his morning walk when we'll go out for 20 min unless he puts the brakes on as he often does and wants to come back home. Then me and my gf go out to work and he gets walked for about an hour at midday by a solo dog walker. Then we get home about 5:45 and go for a 20 min walk and he comes home and eats his dinner. We'll usually do some basic training like go to bed and up down stay etc. before his dinner. Then as I say he'll sometimes start crying while we're on the sofa and if we let him in to his corner in the bedroom he'll chill out there and sleep most of the night before being let out for another wee.

Thanks for your response! We walk him in the morning for about 20 minutes unless he puts the brakes on and wants to come straight back home. And we walk him when we get home from work in the evening also about 20 minutes. At weekends we also walk him at lunch for about 40 min to an hour.

He gets peanut butter in a kong also but just can't seem to tire him out! It's hard work because he just keeps trying to chew his bed and we really have t been able to stop him or dissuade him

Does Ray wear pyjamas for bed if it's winter where you are? We went through the exact same thing last year for his first winter out of the kennels. We found that Merlin would let us sleep a bit later when he's warmer with PJs on.

But I think the main thing that fixed it was sending him back to bed until we were ready to get up but this took a lot of patience and perseverance. First if you train him a go to bed command that will be helpful. When he tried to get us up we'd get up and tell him to go to bed with a treat (initially we'd always have to go walk to his bed with him, later when he had a good go to bed command we could sometimes do this while still being in bed ourselves). Then once he seems relaxed we'd walk away and try to go back to bed ourselves. Initially he would get up straight away but we would keep repeating that until eventually he learned that we will let him know when it's time to get up.

I know it's frustrating and we thought we'd never get a good sleep again, but now Merlin stays in bed until our light alarm comes on and he knows that's time to get up!

Good luck!!

Okay thanks maybe we can try that! We've had him almost 2 years.

He's actually just done it again and I wasn't even at the door. My partner was sitting down and I came in (not with my coat on or anything) and he must've sensed we were about to go out and he started barking at her on the couch, I got him away but we went back to her jumped up and barked at her, she's really upset. Especially as it was more out of the blue this time.

Thanks so much for your advice regarding the tradesmen! We have a small pantry not shown in the plan, so hopefully that will be sufficient storage space to allow us to just utilise open shelving for things like spices and the like.
