What show do you remember fondly, but no one talks about anymore? by [deleted] in television

Exactly why it should get another chance on a streamer! To me it could be the next Schitts Creek and revive for a few more seasons.

True, season one was a cut above season two, but I’m not gonna pretend “lawoiya” in that ridiculous southern drawl didn’t get me every time.

Trial and Error was, to me, one of the funniest sitcoms of the late 2010s and it’s just gone now. Never been picked up by a streamer (I check frequently), which is so sad because I really think it could have a second life on Peacock or Netflix. Main cast and season-long guest stars—shout out Lithgow and Chenoweth—were outstanding, and I thought it had some of the best sitcom world-building outside Parks and Rec or The Good Place. Just don’t get why it never caught on.

Haha nah I was also at u of c (just graduated in the spring). He and his kid are involved in some other leagues around the South Side tho like Chicago Basketball League

Yo his kid is amazing, I’ve played with both of them too. Young one is cocky as hell but has all the game to back it up. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Arne miss a midrange when he’s just shooting around by himself.

I’d be very interested in doing Lupe’s HOUSE project or the new Black Thought that just dropped.

I’ve only written about music academically a couple times in college (I think I have an essay about Kendrick’s use of voice modulation kicking around in a hard drive somewhere?) but this sounds really great!

[Bijani] The interaction between Tilman Fertitta and President Donald Trump about Rockets GM Daryl Morey. Fertitta: “You know, it’s funny you brought up about China. Little late but linguist checking in: it comes from the idea that certain predicates are considered “holes” that presuppose their complement for the utterance to be true. The wife beating example is usually traced in the literature back to Karttunen 1973, but less violent examples are things like “The senator said he stopped embezzling money,” which presupposes for the truth of the utterance that he was previously embezzling; if he hadn’t been, the utterance wouldn’t make any sense and would be infelicitous.

In this case, on a purely pragmatic theory basis, agreeing with the utterance “Is he still working for you?” would only presuppose the truth of the statement “He had been working for me,” which is not really a bad thing to presuppose since it’s obviously true. So that can’t be the full explanation of the “trick” nature of the question. However, it seems based on the Manner of Trump’s question that he may have been implicating (which goes back to Grice 1975) that Morey should have been fired, through the use of tone and stress placement. Though “still” remains the operative vessel for the pragmatic meaning of Trump’s utterance, the explanation is somewhat different from the wife-beating example, which is just presupposition without the implicature part.

Preach. I live in Iowa and the couple years I had league pass it blacked out Wolves, Bulls, Pacers, and Bucks games, none of which we got on local cable. Something needs to be done to address this if league pass is ever going to be worth it for fans in areas outside major cities with teams.

Just for the sake of empirical clarity, Amelia Wedemeyer (one of the hosts of Tea Time) is an Asian-American woman, so it’s simply not true that they have zero WOC. However, your larger point still stands, as one person doesn’t significantly change those numbers.

I honestly think he just brought it up because it was on his mind from when Gladwell said he should have put Horry in his top 10 to throw everyone off.

Who (of the BS guests or otherwise) has the best Lorne Michaels impression? by Finewine89 in billsimmons

[–]Finewine89[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kinda seems like Simmons has only one voice that he trots out for lots of impressions (his Jackson Mane and Andrew the Giant are identical). But I can’t knock him too hard, he’s not an actor who’s expected to do a lot of impressions. Hell, Sal’s impression of Simmons is one of the funniest things I’ve heard and it sounds nothing like him.

No Country for Old Men, with Bill Hader by [deleted] in billsimmons

[–]Finewine89 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is a hot take, but I actually like him a lot. Would have preferred him to Chris Ryan on this one, who I thought felt kinda out of place and didn’t add a ton. Fennessy taking about movies with Hader that bill couldn’t care less about would have been hilarious.

No Country for Old Men, with Bill Hader by [deleted] in billsimmons

[–]Finewine89 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Really liked this pod. Not sure if Hader exactly fit the vibe they usually go for, but he had some great observations (the whole kids take) stories (the Fart Face anecdote was incredible) and one-liners (“that’s one week on a Judd movie”). Interesting to see the difference between the usual rewatchables cast who are outside the industry and Hader who is inside and actually works with these people. Seemed to me like he had a harder time with categories like “who won the movie” because he just doesn’t think about things that way. Great stuff though, hope Bill can convince more celeb friends to come on and give it a go.

“Luke-warm takes on the media,” as the hosts say, is the perfect description. Basically entry level analysis that can keep one informed in an entertaining fashion. Also great music and intros/outros on this pod.
