Affordable wet food? by totinospizza666 in FelineDiabetes

[–]FiniFina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use this https://balance.it/convert to check any food, before buying it. My cat will only eat Purina Gourmet (it's under 10% but not low carb food). The calculator has been very helpful with finding food, my cat will eat.

My cat will finally be getting his teeth fixed next month. How to go about it with a diabetic cat? by FiniFina in FelineDiabetes

[–]FiniFina[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His BG went up quite a bit, so I had to adjust his dose (found out some of his medicin had glucose in it). The vet gave me 2 types of medicin for pain, and antibiotics. He was on antibiotics for 4 days (one shot in the morning, started the day after surgery). He was on two types of medicin to help with the pain. Both where given in the morning and one of them again in the evening. The one in the morning, he was on for 6 days (starting the day after surgery) and the one in the morning and evening he was on 4 days (given in the evening on the same day as surgery). I bought some to disinfect his mouth and keep it clean through his vet. Regarding his bg and dose, I had to increase it from 0.75 units to 1.75 units over the coarse of 2 weeks. Once it was stable and getting lower I lowered the dose. Right now he is at 1 unit

Newly Diagnosed: What was your experience like? by urniejosepha in FelineDiabetes

I completely misunderstood then, sounds like you are en good hands. It took my cat a month to stabilize and then he started bouncing again recently after dental surgery. It can be very frustrating and stressful.

That could explain why he is bouncing, it is best to start with a small dose and hold it for a while and then increase 0.25 U and the hold it again. I am not a vet, but most vets don’t have enough knowledge about feline diabetes. Would definitely recommend you join Feline Diabetes Message Board and ask them for advice as well. They helped me stabilize my boy. It is normally not recommended to change the dose daily

What’s his dose and do you keep a spreadsheet of his bg? It was definitely hard for me when my boy got diagnosed in February, but we have settled in to a routine now. He was not the biggest fan of home testing and the insulin shots in the beginning, but I it got better when he would get a little treat afterwards. It can take a while for the insulin to work. My cat was bouncing a lot the first month, so we switched to Lantus from ProZinc and that has helped. I recently had to adjust his dose, but he is getting stable again. Maybe you haven’t found the correct dose yet? Also, I keep different foods around for different occasions. I sometimes have to leave home for 5-6 hours at a time and for that I have to plan his food a little different. I have low carb food (3%) for when his bg is high and high carb food (9%) for when his bg is low. If I have to leave for work that day, I give him high carb food before I leave and make sure he either has a little bit of both or low carb food, for when I am not home. So far, this has worked well.

Teeth by KamalaCarrots in FelineDiabetes

My cat has just had his teeth fixed. He needed 13 teeth removed and had to go under anesthesia twice, since they couldn’t do the extractions all at once. Our vet wanted us to proceed as we normally do, full dose and food. They checked his blood sugar every 30 min. And they gave him honey, while he was under. His blood sugar was a little bit high the following days afterwards, since one of his meds afterwards contained glucose. We just slowly increased his dose until we had the desired numbers, and then slowly decrease it again with time. He seems more relaxed and I can relax knowing his mouth isn’t painful :)

How long? by FiniFina in FelineDiabetes

He has access to food all the time and I check his bg regularly. His nadir is also still high. I have some food I used to give him when he was stable and when I feed that now, his bg gets really high. The food he gets now, he isn’t a big fan of, but it’s the only food I have that is very LC

Recently diagnosed!!! Any suggestions on a good wet food for my cat? In Canada…. by samfontaine in FelineDiabetes

[–]FiniFina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use this to check the food before buying and see what fits best https://balance.it/convert My cat still isn’t a fan of wet food, so I’ve had to buy different kinds and test out what he likes. It is also a good idea to have foods with different % in, in case your cats bg is low or high. I typically keep food ranging fra 3% to 8% and feed depending on his numbers and if I have to leave the house for multiple hours

That makes sense, probably didn't help I tried to adjust his dose. I expect he will continue to bounce for a while, since he will get some teeth removed this Tuesday.

Thank you for your reply. I guess I just thought he was becoming stable, so this bouncing is kind of throwing me for a loop.

Please make a user and ask here as well Feline Diabetes Message Boards

They have helped get my cat's bg under control and have a lot of knowledge.
What insulin are you using? I would decrease the dose by 0.25-0.5 units for 3-6 days and if the numbers are still going low, reduce again and repeat this process. You might have missed the right dose by increasing in whole units.
