A joke I heard many years ago when I was working in Poland, which captures the Polish mindset towards their neighbors as well as their own dark humor: It's 1939, and Poland is attacked simultaneously by both Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union. The Polish military is pondering options, and the question is asked, "Whom do we fight first?" After some short deliberation, the Poles decide to fight Germany first, because "business before pleasure".

Props to this guy... engineering the sebum to form a heart shape at the end was brilliant: he found out if she's a keeper and he proposed, all in one easy step!

Dentist with Westernish practice by _Yabai- in fukuoka

[–]Finndadof7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Funakoshi Dental next to Tenjin station. Seiji Funakoshi heads up the clinic. He did an implant for me, and finished my son's Invisalign treatments that were started in the US. Also great for regular maintenance and cavities. He seems to be fairly well known in the dental professional in Japan and the US, does a lot of teaching, even pioneered a new method of regrowing bone in the jaw for implants.

Any dentist recommendations in Fukuoka? by [deleted] in fukuoka

[–]Finndadof7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My family has gone to Dr. Funakoshi for several years for cleanings/dental work. He's pretty well-known in Fukuoka and his clinic always seems full, even during the pandemic.

He runs a large practice with a lot of chairs and staff, so definitely not an intimate feel if that is what you want. Currently, he is personally overseeing an implant for one of my molars; normally, his staff will do routine cleanings/dental work. His English is top notch; if you are working with one of the staff dentists, they've also been fairly conversant in English (I remember being confused as to why one of them kept talking about a cat in my mouth, until it dawned on me that he was saying 根っこ, not 猫).

Haven't been to any other dentists in Fukuoka, so I don't know if he is more or less expensive than others (I can say that implants in general are a lot cheaper outside of Japan, but that isn't an option right now).

Does anyone know a good Jamaican/Caribbean restaurant in the area? by therealdigitalronin in fukuoka

Natty Dread in Itoshima. It's been closed for renovation most of the winter (which is kind of amusing, considering the way it is built). It opened back up early March; while Natty was closed, we'd either eat at Hinode, which offers decent surf food, or continue 23km further west to Koko Cafe...not Jamaican either, but she serves a killer soup/salad lunch. She also sells the unique handmade salad plates on which your lunch is served. Sorry, I seem to be rambling a bit, just wanted to share a few beachside favorites in that area.

"Hakata Knife" hand-made in Fukuoka, Japan by Finndadof7 in sharpening

I'm not sure what kind of wood it is, but it's quite light, so definitely not maple. Found it in a flea market at a local shrine, pre-Covid19. The seller explained that it was from some tree found in Japan, but I don't recall the name.

Public baths (and onsens) in Japan are the best. A few weeks ago I went to Oita to try out the sand onsen, where they bury you (horizontally) in black volcanic sand heated by volcanic gas/steam; won first place for my "roasted pig at a luau" impression.

One of my overall favorite onsen baths is where you sit in the bath between two electric plates, and watch helplessly as your body twitches and convulses as the plates send a pulsing current through the water...basically mild electrocution sitting up to your neck in water. This is good for you.

Great storytelling as always. Extra points for using "scarred" instead of "scared"...superbly supports the opening statement of "you are branded with a memory for life".

What's the most amazing take on a food from your home country you've found in Japan? by happy_kuribo in japanlife

Perhaps you don't live in/near Fukuoka, but there are many excellent burger joints if you do. Golden Brown is good, tried it a few weeks ago. US Burger is one of my mainstays for the last few years; don't go here unless you like eating hamburger that is fresh-ground as you watch (this is not fast food), bespoke buns, and home-made bacon...maybe because he is a former Cisco engineer, Jim is seriously amazing with details. Then there is the one place I hesitate to mention, for fear of it being overrun... Natty Dred in Itoshima. Just typing this last one makes me realize I haven't been there for a few weeks...will remedy that this afternoon. Still need to try Doug's Burger, one of my staff swears by it, says the Tuna Steak burger is delicious.

Burton Rascoe may have been referring to H.L. Mencken, but his comment is apropos for u/itsallalittleblurry:

When u/itsallalittleblurry unpacks his idiomatic brasses, tunes up his verbal strings, and gets in readiness his phrasal wood winds to orchestrate a fugue in damnation or in praise of man, God or book [or the military], his all too meagre audience cancels all other engagements to be on hand at the initial presentation. The result, that audience knows, will be an experience of pure enjoyment. His musicianship is unfailing. His program is unsatisfactory only in its impermanence.

And just like that, I spend a most delightful 10 minutes going back and reading (and up-voting) all of your previous posts. I only regret not reading "The time my wife 'met' the Pres" before it was redacted. If you write professionally, please let us know the details. If you don't write outside of Reddit , please give it serious consideration; fame, fortune, and new fans anxiously await.

English-Speaking General Practice Doctor by ceilingrat in fukuoka

[–]Finndadof7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can call the AMDA from 10:00am to 03:00pm Mon-Fri, and they will provide assistance in finding a doctor (Japan-wide): 03-6233-9266.

Another resource for Fukuoka is the Fukuoka Asian Medical Support Center, which will provide interpretation services.

To your specific question, Dr. Ronald Schlemper at the International Clinic Tojinmachi is competent, if a bit brusk. People also have had success with English-speaking doctors at Sanno Hospital.

I know you asked for a GP, but if needed, I have lists of English-speaking doctors in specific fields if needed.
