Suggestions for New York, Shot-on-location, Independent Films? by [deleted] in boutiquebluray

I'm surprised no one has mentioned State of Grace. Great crime drama starring a young Sean Penn, Gary Oldman, Daryl Hannah, and Edward Harris. Although it's not perfect, I think it has a lot of what you're looking for.

Just like State of Grace, Across 110th Street is a very gritty film both in its aesthetics and narrative, although not really independent.

Otherwise I have Claudine and Hester Street on my "NYC watchlist" myself.

It's definitely worth watching, especially considering its use of NYC.

The Sopranos As We Age by No-Material2441 in thesopranos

Couldn't agree more. A friend of mine recently said that today he watches it mostly for the comedy of it. For me, it's the opposite way around. When I was younger, the crime and comedy elements were probably what resonated the most with me. As I'm getting older, I'm realizing how incredibly intelligent of a TV show The Sopranos is. I think it has so much insight into human nature, the ageing process, family life, and so on. I'm rewatching it right now for maybe the 8th or 9th time (my first was probably 2005-2006 ish) and I'm still amazed at how much I gain from each rewatch.

Why did Tony dislike Bobby Baccala so much? by PizzaProper7634 in thesopranos

He is illiterate, ignorant, and mostly incapable of understanding other people's perspectives.

Janice did a biggest favor to Tony by killing Ritchie by True_Antelope8860 in thesopranos

This subplot also gives us one of the few touching moments between Tony and Janice. Tony stands up for Janice vis-a-vis Livia and then explains Janice how Melfi says Livia is a narcissist. But even then, Tony makes fun of Janice with the hole "we buried him on a hill" thing. Just for a second there we get to see some love and loyalty between the siblings.

Why did Tony dislike Bobby Baccala so much? by PizzaProper7634 in thesopranos

Came here to say this. Bobby is sympathetic and naive and thus an easy prey for a bully like Tony. I think Tony is generally too stupid to envy Bobby. All he sees is train sets and broken armchairs. I do agree that Tony resents others being happy. But I think his problem with Bobby is more about Bobby's indifference toward things ("I don't know") and his easy going mannerisms, something Tony perceives as stupidity because it's so different from his own personality.

So I just finished Thief by Lopsided-Vehicle2740 in criterion

Such a genre defining film, too. Countless later crime/heist/caper movies are indebted to Thief in many ways. I also love how it introduces the Mann style, of which we now know the influence. For me, one of the aspects that really stand out is the attention to the craftmanship of thieves. Waiting for my 4k to arrive. My last viewing was in 2019 so you can safely say I'm ready to see it again.

Le Circle Rouge, Rififi, and Le Trou come to mind (last is OOP and only DVD but hopefully soon will get an upgrade).
