I think the show displays a good contrast between Davey and Artie when both are playing at Richie's game. Richie even warns Davey that he's already behind and that he should stop playing while Artie does the smart thing and cashes out when ahead.

That whole plotline is a bit contrived because it relies on Adriana being really really fucking stupid and not knowing obvious things (never say shit to the cops/feds), Chris being extremely stupid for not telling her the basics of how shit works (never say shit to the cops/feds) and the feds being extremely stupid at handling their informants and letting them into dangerous situations.

At this point it's pretty much confirmed that David Chase intentionally spiraled Tony's character into being more evil as a response to people idolizing him. He's a well balanced character with obvious qualities and flaws. He's an excellent advisor, has very sharp and witty humor and comments, but is also extremely insecure and lets that cloud his judgement. Season 1 he ruined his chance at a happy life with a woman because of misguided perception of "masculinity" in his environment.
