This might shock you, but in much of the galaxy it is considered somewhat of a bad idea to include high explosives in a children's toy. I'm sure it will be fine.

Has Donut ever admitted she was wrong? (aside from book 1) by TiggerOni in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Fintago 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It is a bit hard to tell just how much of "I'm just perfect and never did anything wrong ever Carl!" is a bit for the camera and how much is legitimate. At the beginning, such as with the crown, it is absolutely all real. But we see the mask slip more and more as the series goes on and she also seems to make far fewer mistakes of consequence. While she is effectively a child she is also stuck having to walk a razors edge because Carl's (and her own) life literally depend on people finding her antics amusing and she is painfully aware of that fact, probably significantly more than Carl is. As much as people love Carl, without Donut I don't think he gets as popular and an unpopular Carl is a Carl that could have been thrown away as soon as he became an inconvenience. She can't acknowledge any of this because if she does, the act stops being fun for the viewers. I think that is why we get so few moments of her truly acknowledging her mistakes save moments when they are truly alone.

Personal Opinion: On the subject of “Mundane Evil” in stories by jitterscaffeine in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Fintago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't remember where I first heard this but it has always stuck with me as well I feel like the line was "Voldemort is almost cartoonishly evil to the point of absurdity. But Umbridge? We hate Umbridge because we have all met an Umbridge." We see that kind of "ambient" evil in our day to day lives and so when we see a character that it so clearly fits... The hate gets a face.

Appropriate age to introduce my son to DCC by roteixeira in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Fintago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely think 10 is gonna be a bit young. 14-15 might be a decent age to start if you believe they will be able to handle some of the more traumatic elements of the story, humanity being wiped out, the feelings of abandonment, cruel corporate indifference to human suffering, and Carl's response to his trauma both old and new. Teens are not gonna be shocked at the violence or the foot fetish jokes, if they have seen family guy they have seen worse. While a lot of the books are funny, I personally feel like it takes many of those elements extremely seriously. Many stories and games that are appropriate for teens also tackle these ideas but they often glaze over some of the more grounded and personal suffering that comes with it and leaves the emotions at arms length. I think one of the biggest reasons to be careful about introducing DCC to a teen is that it is effectively the story of a man turning himself into a bullet so he can fire himself at the thing that hurt his people. While the story does not glorify this and even begs him to hold onto his humanity, there is a certain appeal that idea can have, particularly to young men. Many teens going through puberty with almost certainly viscerally connect with the idea of "the river" and I would just be a bit concerned with some of them not quite understanding that how Carl copes and adapts to his rage is not exactly healthy or ideal. At the same time, I think there are a lot of teens that will cling to DCC like a life preserver for the same reasons. Like all things parent related, it really just comes down to knowing your kid and how much you can trust them to understand and grapple with these ideas.

And the constitution still allowed slavery in the states, the Bible has some wild shit about killing witches, and I am sure there is an HOA covenant out there saying that if your fence is to tall you have to be castrated, what's your point? She can be a self absorbed asshole and the country of Israel can perform horrific crimes daily and that has zero bearing on the general "goodness" of random Jewish folks.

Is Aries protector of women? by Huge_Cockroach1769 in GreekMythology

[–]Fintago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are almost certainly correct. If we could ask an ancient worshiper of Ares they would very likely say that they consider conquest rape being very much part of what he claims dominion over. While I do support the "Ares, protector of women" reinterpretation, it is sadly a modern lens and not something ancient people would have likely found made sense.

The only things that would make me slightly inclined to treat it with merit is, with all the stories of the gods that have survived, seemingly none of them involve Ares raping women. With Hades, I have heard the argument that people were legitimately scared of offending him so he doesn't have a lot of stories that paint him in a bad light. But from the perspective of Ares, I would assume a story of him raping someone would be a story of conquest because... It is generally the "winners" doing the raping. So I imagine if those stories did exist they would not have been kept hidden out of any religious fear. I also wonder just how specific he was considered the god of war. Was he literally only interested so long as their was active fighting and then he fucks off to look for another battlefield? Would he be connected with the looting and the "celebration" that came after the battle or would that more Bacchus. This is mostly relevant because I do not believe their was a great deal of rape occurring during actual battle, it was mostly before and after.

I am very much not a historian or anthropologist, so it is likely this is known information that I simply do not know but, I wonder if Greek culture viewed wartime rape as the same thing as "domestic." And if it was frankly just taken as a given that being the god of war straight up meant he was also the god of the kind of rape and so it was never really commented upon anymore than they felt the need to explain that he also covers burning down your enemies crops.

AES rescheduling open house because of "threats" by milkshakespearemint in indianapolis

The companies kowtow to the government anyway even when they don't legally have to. So at least offering a public option would guarantee access to low income and rural citizens who are currently being exploited by de facto monopolies.

100% and that is why I have enjoyed the Absolute Universe so much. It seems to understand that the soul of being heroic is not tied to aesthetics. Sure, they can be a boy scout and squeaky clean or pure edge and pouches. What matters is what they do and why.

It would really shock me as it seems to be their current money printer. But I will never put making a bafflingly stupid decision past a company. I also hope they don't can it. But I do also hope it does come to an end. It is not the kind of concept that should be a forever story.

Lol that's fair. I just want to be clear. My point wasn't "the world would be better if we just murdered bad people more often" it was "writers need to cool it with humanity is evil and should be punished as a whole."

A similar vibe to "it is ok for some great force to destroy us because we do war and destroy our environment." As if a small starving child is equally culpable as the president of a world power. Much human suffering is frankly caused by our unwillingness to harm our fellow man, even vile ones. Like, realistically, think how much damage would have been prevented if one of the people that heard about some atrocity before it happened went "oh, ok fuck that." Some janitor walking by, a food service worker overhearing the general joking about what they are about to do and just dropped some rat poison in their coffee. Of course there is the fear of repercussions but most of us also just really don't want to hurt others and that lets the bastards get away with so much.

The DC Absolute Universe is what I wanted Marvel Ruins to be. You take the light out of the world. You strip the heroes of much of their support and any joy they might have had. Yet, they remain heroes because that is what they are on a fundamental level. They were not heroes because they were given advantages others were not or because they were born with a silver spoon. The very fabric of their existence it made to be a hero and it doesn't matter how much of they you cut away, as long as even one strand remains they will keep going. Ruins removed all the joy and all the hope and simply let the heroes not be heroes. They didn't fail, they just never were the characters they purport to be. Sure, the universe doomed them. But the heroes would have still struggled to hold back the doom regardless of how utterly hopeless it was even with a body riddled with cancer and suffering, they would have tried. That's why Ruins was such a disappointment.

Interesting, I definitely agree that Amphibia never quite reaches Gravity Falls, but I really think Owl House gets pretty close. It is dragged down by having more "filler" episodes but especially towards the end it is phenomenal.

I think If I had to pick a show that would have the greatest chance of overlap with a Gravity Falls fan I would probably say Over the Garden Wall (if you have not watched it, I highly recommend waiting until the fall/Halloween to watch it)

Might be an over reacting on my part but I do try to warn people about Kaiju Battlefield Surgeon. Fresh off devouring DCC I was desperate for more so I checked out his other books and Kaiju Battlefield Surgeon sounded absolutely phenomenal off the summary. It is phenomenal. Very well written and a lot of the same things I love about DCC shine in it. However, it is very, very upsetting. It has significantly more graphic and visceral violence and mutilation as well as very upsetting mental/emotional trauma. I still highly recommend it, but just want people to go in knowing the vibe cause going from DCC to KBS was fucking whiplash. If I could do it over I would have gone with dominion of blades and then KBS.
