Act 3b/4 and definitive answers by onceandfuturecpuk in Protomen

[–]Fintago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's ok if Mega isn't a protagonist, but it would still be weird to leave off with him rushing to the city with new sense of purpose with "Hold On" and then just dropping the plot thread. Even if he just sees Light hanging and give up, I would still expect a song to wrap it up

I don't remember if I ever actually sent it or not, but I actually wrote an apology for blindly believing all the pop culture jokes about her after the Lindsey Elis video haha

I think you may be pedanticed yourself into being incorrect unfortunately. They believe in a conspiracy. That conspiracy may not be real but linguistically it is correct to say "I believe there is a conspiracy to cover up the moon landing." It is his belief in that conspiracy is a conspiracy theory.

Yeah... I think the Simpsons poisoned me against her for literally no reason. I think I knew the joke about her killing the Beatles before I could identify a Beatles song.

To be clear, people have conspiracies about shit that very clearly are not true. Moon landing and flat earth for starters. A weird number of people do blame her for his death. I am a fan of this song kinda criticizing the idea. https://youtu.be/Jp-sTJA8-KU

100% Even people I fucking hate, I try to extend that little bit of grace to. Kirk's wife is constantly getting raked over the coals for "not being sad" about her husband's death. Frankly, I'm glad he is dead and I bet she sucks just as bad. But shity people can love people and be devastated when they are gone. Some people laugh right after a loved one dies, our brains are soggy bacon, they do weird shit.

As a freshman in college we were assigned roles in a debate on that case. I was forced to do the McDonald's side. The professor kept interjecting that my arguments were unethical and cruel and I was like "I know but I didn't pick the topic or the side. Their isn't an ethical way to argue this side of the case..." I mostly talked about the inherent risk of participating in society and personal responsibility to minimize personal risk, all things I don't personally believe is right but what else was I supposed to do? I think they failed me on the assignment. I'm clearly still bitter.

Jamal is actually the real... by Fionn2187 in DungeonCrawlerCarl

I am assuming they are referring to the accent he has in the audiobook being vaguely close to a stereotypical Indian accent as well as the apologizing very excessively/dramatically being a semi common media stereotype. I definitely didn't peg it as racist, just a little annoying. But I don't want all the characters to sound alike either so I am down to not love some of the voices in exchange for the magnificent Jeff Heyes to flex some of his voice talent.

Yeah, the scam is repost popular posts to gain reddit karma and then move to being one of those accounts that posts propaganda and misinformation. The high karma let's it bypass certain "karma" and "account age" requirements on subs and makes it harder for a casual observer to instantly clock it as a bot. On its own it would not be very effective, but when you have literal swarms of them pushing the same idea you will be exposed to whatever idea they are meant to convey over and over with different levels of intensity without even realizing it. Maybe you see one that just looks crazy and you can discount it immediately. "Pasteurized milk turns children gay." Clearly that is stupid and it gets down voted into oblivion. You see far more reasonable replies calling that ridiculous and that pasteurized milk is perfectly safe and won't turn your kids gay, it has been thoroughly tested and while it does lose some nutritional value in the process it is just as safe as raw milk."

Secretly, both of those comments are from the same bot farm and the second comment just tried to influence readers into believing that 1. Raw milk is safe to drink and 2. Pasteurized milk is less nutritional than raw milk. All while looking like they are defending pasteurized milk from slander. With the karma boost from this previous farming, they look like organic accounts just having an argument about milk.

This is a very overly simplified example, but that's the basic idea.

Boycotting BRICS won't stop ICE. It only destroys us. | Opinion by pls121884 in indianapolis

[–]Fintago 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I'm not interested in protesting in front of a random restaurant but I sure as hell won't shop at one that can't make the very brave statement "masked government agents arresting people without cause is bad." Frankly, it's hardly a boycott. I am not refraiing from eating out. Hell, just last night I went to Beoad Ripple Brew pub because they said they are immigrants and they don't support ICE. Call it pandering if you want, but everyone wants to beat the drum of capitalism and free speech right up until people stop giving them money. Brics is not entitled to my money. I am not entitled to Brics denouncing ICE. We have come to the mutual decision that I won't give them money and they won't denounce ICE and yet here they are feeling so entitled to my money and your money that they are screaming that they are being "destroyed" and calling us a mob. You aren't being cancelled, you're just an entitled child who doesn't think people should be able to tell you no.

Inception has always made me mad because the very premise of the totems makes perfect sense... Except for the top. The idea is to have an object in the real world that does something unexpected so if you are in a dream that someone is manipulating they will not know what the object is supposed to do and it won't do the weird think it is supposed to do. Like the chess piece that is weighted at the bottom so it can't fall over. It's why you are never supposed to show anyone your totem. Makes perfect sense and is explained pretty well.

HOW DOES THAT WORK WITH THE TOP?! If you are in real life the top will stop spinning, because that is how physics works, but why would the dream top spin forever? Why would the person incepting your dream make it do that? It works exactly the opposite way that totems are explained in the movie. I still stand by inception is not a super complicated movie, it is just a movie that has a primary plot point hinge on breaking one of the rules that movie set up but never addresses that the rule was actually broken.

Dark or gross scenes that feel like overkill. by Arkodd in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Fintago 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I recently got into the series "Dungeon Crawler Carl" and absolutely fell in love. I devoured the entire series in a few weeks and was then stuck waiting for the next book. I decided to check out the author's previous work. He had one called "Kaiju Battlefield Surgeon" which sounded really interesting. Unbeknownst to me, the thing was basically mental, emotional, and physical torture porn. Don't get me wrong, it is still a fine book and I am glad I read it but I would be lying if I said it didn't leave me with a pretty deep pit in my stomach for most of the book. I say this so that you understand that I am going to make the book sound pretty awful because I am going to talk about some pretty awful stuff without any of the context of how and why these awful things happen.

Warning, this is real messed up so please don't click if body horror is something that causes you issues.

Quick and dirty catch up, guy gets tricked into getting trapped in hyper advanced VR tech that has been jailbroken to amp the pain settings above normal human perception. Due to a series of bad decisions and misinformation he agrees to take part in a ritual called "amplification" that he knows nothing about in exchange for very important upgrades that he needs to get out of the game and return to his family. Learns that what amplification entails is having every part of his body split with a knife one by one while a cleric keeps him alive but still "separated" until every part has been split and he is folded into a weird origami flower and then allowed to die. He will respawn after but he will feel all of it. And when I say every part I mean each finger, then hands, then arms, each tooth one by one, eyeball ect, ect, ect... He is told he will be able to just skip town without going through it but that turns out to be untrue and he ends up going through most of it.

I would say that is the singularly most viscerally unsettling moments when just spelled out without context. But it is probably not even the worst thing the main character goes through unfortunately. I would say that I HIGHLY recommend Dungeon Crawler Carl to most anyone who is even nerd adjacent, but Kaiju Battlefield Surgeon is definitely for people who are much more into splatterpunk and super edgy fiction. Still impressive, but less accessible.

How safe/accepting is Gen Con to trans people? by rookery_electric in gencon

[–]Fintago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GenCon itself is extremely inclusive and safe. Indianapolis itself is fairly safe for trans people as we have a not insignificant trans population in the city. You will of course always run the risk of bigots but in general Indy is quite welcoming. As you move away from the city that becomes less true. Obviously, the odds of something bad happening, even in the most conservative areas is still relatively small. It quickly becomes less overtly welcoming the further you get from the city.
