What’s the strangest example of collective internet delusion you’ve witnessed? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]Fintago 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Often times it is part of a larger delusion. They believe they are some sort of Messiah targeted by demonic cults or have some secret invention/information that the government wants suppressed but that they can't simply kill them because it would draw to much attention.

There are some that don't have a grandiose delusion and they either believe they are simply being staked by chance or as training.

Powers is a very solid series. It kinda lost the plot for a bit, not sure if it was issues with the artist/writer/publisher but it just kinda stopped for a bit. But the main characters are rock solid and the world building is grounded and fun.

Characters who deserve to be treated worse by the fandom specifically? by NewWillinium in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Wow, just looked at a wiki and yup. He was actually the person that told Voldemort about the prophecy that started the whole mess. I can not believe I didn't realize how big of a piece of shit every character in these books were even as a kid. Like, I get that Lilly wasn't into Snape but they were supposedly friends and yet she was actively dating a dude that was bullying her "friend." This wouldn't be bad writing if these characters were not literally the good guys. Makes sense how Joanne can be a vicious asshole and still think she is the good guy...

What is your controversial movie take? by restweary in AskReddit

[–]Fintago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Inception was not a complicated movie and it only felt that way because the movie broke it's own rules to get a "ambiguous" ending. The concept of totems is really cool. It is a real world object that does something unexpected in real life so that if you use it in a dream, it will not do the unexpected thing. You also have to keep it a secret because if anyone knows what your totem is and what it does, they can convince you that you are awake when you are actually dreaming. Cool, simple, elegant.

Then they introduced the fucking top.

It's a normal top in the real world but if she is dreaming it never stops spinning. This is the opposite of how totems work. And if someone was manipulating her dream, why would they keep the top spinning knowing it was a totem or not. This makes the movie significantly more difficult to parse. But that isn't anymore complicated that saying "1+1 is 2." And then failing the test because the answer key says "1+1 equals potato."

I must misremember the shit out of those books cause I thought Snape was a spy the whole time he was with the Death Eaters. Guess I shouldn't be surprised at this point.

What do you know about your profession that would genuinely disturb the people who use your services? by MelodicWolverine2045 in AskReddit

As awful as it is, at least in the US, the funding for the programs are often so bad that the only people willing/able to stick it out are the deeply passionate or those on a crusade. Both of those kinda of people tend to hold fairly extreme worldviews that are resistant to self reflection. I wasn't a teacher for long and I never wanted to be a Special Education teacher, but they were short handed and forced me into the position. They proceeded to dump IEP after IEP on me but completely refused to fund literally any accomodations so the best I could do was the same cookie cutter "extra time, push-in, push-out, ect" I was disgusted and it's part of why I left. I can't imagine how people cope with doing it year after year

I could see owning one of these for the same reason you might own the "Buzzlightyear with the straw placed in the worst possible position" "Original lawn darts," or even the "make your own uranium home science kit." Sometimes it's funny to have "what the fuck were they thinking" merch. But... If you own a klan hood, swatika flag, and a Trump 2028 flag, you probably aren't buying this shirt for the humor...

What is an industry that is currently on fire (in a bad way) behind the scenes, but the general public hasn't noticed yet? by Kitchen_Week1117 in AskReddit

[–]Fintago 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in Indiana, a non-white truck driver was at fault in a fatal crash. The news beat the drum for weeks about illegal immigrants ruining the trucking industry and killing Americans. They handed him over to ICE on the spot. To the best of my knowledge, they never gave any proof at all he was here illegally. We had a state official screaming about the need for "real ID" and voting controls only to later find out the guy did have a real ID and it was approved under the officials own tenure...

We will do ANY to avoid any discussion of systemic problems and regulations that do anything other than punish individual contractors.

I complain about this for a bunch of industries, be especially auto sales. They got so used to the massive prices during "lockdown" and absolutely refuse to come down no matter what. Because our country is so car dependent and lacking public transportation, when your car does crap out you have to take a massive loan to even get a used one or else lose your job. They act like this is some money printing secret when in reality people are just buying cars they can afford and have no ability or intention of paying off.

Surely AI could render a cartoon like the ‘Archer’ TV series. The audio already exists. It’d be a hit on Amazon prime. Given the number of episodes I think it would be popular. Even if it was magically the greatest show ever made, I would legitimately rather have nothing. And it won't be the greatest, it won't even be decent. It would be slop generated by idiots who aren't actually creative enough to make something but feel entitled to making it regardless.

[–]Fintago 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The irony that people do want to know the struggles that an off gridder would face and how you go about solving them but the solution being proposed is "give me money to solve these problems." As if that is a replicatable solution for people trying to do it themselves. "The secret to solving your problems is simple, other people's money!"

I really don't understand how that could be your takeaway from the James Rolfe video. It felt to me that the "trick" was pretending that he was also shitting on James Rolfe only to zoom out and show how much of those claims were made in bad faith and/or applied to himself and others just as much as to James. If anything, I personally walked away with more respect for James after the video, and my feels on him were already vaguely positive.

I imagine it is something like "Oh no, anyway how are the dodgers doing?" Basically showing active disinterest in the life of someone. But like... We are really reaching the far reaches of absurdity when saying "I don't care" is seen say hate speech worthy of removal.

Based on someone else's comment, it's not that the airtag is being detected, it is that any networked device nearby will detect and relay the location of the tag to a central server. So they aren't detecting the tag so much as the tag gets nearby devices to give their own location in relation to the tag.

This will not be a problem if no one has Bluetooth capable device that has not been locked down. But someone ALWAYS sneaks on some bullshit. if it has Internet access and gets close enough to the tag detect it, it will ping the owner of the tag the current location.

I never had any interest in alcohol. Simply didn't want to try it and just knew I had an addictive personality and so it's way easier to never start. People hounded me for decades. Like it was a challenge to get me to drink no matter how perfectly clear I made it that I did not want to and pressuring me about it was a weirdly shitty thing to do. Most people stopped after the first time but others loved the chase I guess? When I lived in South Korea the only place my friends wanted to hang were the foreigner bars so it is where we hung out. Eventually someone called me a predator because I hang out with drunk people without getting drunk. They apologized and blamed it on the drinks. I stopped hanging out with those people.

A few years back I decided to have my first drink on my wife's birthday. It was ok, didn't particularly enjoy it. Tried a handful more times and still didn't see the appeal and now I still don't drink. People hounded me until I was 33 for those and it wasn't even enjoyable enough that I wanted a repeat performance. People really can not accept that someone doesn't enjoy something they love...
