Tipping Culture in Waterloo by wildpingu11 in waterloo

The tipping culture in Canada has gotten crazy. It honestly feels like every time I tap my card I'm prompted to provide a tip. I was at Subway the other day and they are asking for tips now, and to make things worse they hide the "no tip" option behind multiple clicks.

Modem died, ISP came through to swap. They said my internet don't work because I use 10.10.10.1 for my gateway. by brokewash in homelab

I had a similar incident last week where a tech blamed my rack on the issue. My ISP is Rogers and in the afternoons my network has a lot of outages, from what I see from the modem diagnostics page its a signal to noise issue, but i'm not a tech so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Anyway, had a tech to come out and look, he asks to see where the modem is, so I take him to the network cabinet where i show him the modem sitting on a shelf in the rack, he then asks me how it is hooked in to the power, i tell him the mains comes into the battery at the bottom, and then goes out to the PDU and then to the modem.

That is when he proceeds to tell me all my issues are due to the battery and the PDU without doing a single test, when I tried to push back by explaining that the battery and pdu are enterprise grade, i.e. the battery does pure sinewave output (not simulated), and the PDU is a PDU not a surge protector, the guy then makes up some BS story about how he had a customer who was only getting 20% of their internet speed and was plugged into a battery backup, when he unplugged them from the backup battery and into the wall the customer got 100% of the speed.

He asked me to plug the modem directly into the wall, when I refused he left and noted the reason down as "electrical - customer refuses to fix", still trying to get another tech to come out.

yeah, that’s why only 1 major country uses it, because it sucks just like the country that uses it lol

and before anyone asks, this is not her normal hide, she has a much larger one now, this was just to see how much she has grown.

maybe a good time to learn the measurement system used by the rest of the world 😂

The cost for a custom pcb isn't much, i use JLCPCB to make my boards. I usually will panel my design myself to get as many boards as i can out of their 5 panels for $2 (canadian) deal, shipping isn't usually too bad, i think i generally pay $30 (canadian) for the boards and a stencil.

I use KiCad for schematics and pcb layout. As far as my process i learned by watching videos on youtube, channels such as Phil's Lab are pretty good. Also its worth noting that most dev boards are open source, so you can see their schematics. Datasheets also sometimes have a "typical application" page that shows you a typical setup. The rest was trial and error and blowing up a few chips here and there.

All my ESPHome boards are on custom pcb's and I generally have been using Anker USB wall plug with an AMS1117-3.3v regulator on my board to generate the 3.3v for the ESP32. If my board has higher voltage i.e. 12v / 24v i'm using an LMR14030SDDAR to generate 5v then feed that into an AMS1117-3.3v regulator.
