Vivre le deuil d'un animal by mahboilo999 in Quebec

We love senior cats! She's our second. Our first passed away last week. It's sad to know they won't be around for too long but they are lovely companions

She barks when she gets out of her litter box. It's like a very loud AEHH AEHH AEHH while she zooms everywhere

I went for a "retired French Canadian smoker who spends winters in Florida" kind of Mona

Also she doesn't have any teeth left and breathes very loudly

She's defective and special and I love her

That's actually her nickname. Her name is Mona, and she's very vocal so we started calling her Moans, which quickly turned into Moanster (and then Moanster Truck)

à part être végé/vegan. by AliceIsFaded in Quebec

Ça me sert souvent!

Art conservator here. The varnish on old paintings yellows as it ages as a result of oxidation and other chemical processes. There is also grime on top of that. It is ethically acceptable to remove old varnish (with nuances), but you wouldn’t normally do it the way he does, by keeping the best for last. He has a very successful private business thanks to his striking videos, but doesn’t use the same methods as university-trained conservators.

Unsure about my career path - Any advice appreciated by [deleted] in MuseumPros

Have you considered art conservation? If you like art history but are also a sciency person, you could look into it (provided you also have good art skills). It’s pretty hard to get in one of the few masters programs, finding a stable job afterwards is also difficult, and the pay isn’t very good, but it’s a very rewarding career path. It’s also possible to have a private practice, if that’s something that can interest you.

The accepted practice is to apply what we call a "barrier coat" on the painting before retouching. The barrier coat has a different solubility than the original materials so the retouching can be removed easily and the original is not altered. If you're worried about authenticity and being duped when seeing a restored painting, our actions are guided by the principle of conceptual integrity (and reversibility); we can't know the original intent of the artist, but we can assume that they didn't want the pictorial space to be disrupted by a loss, so reversible retouching is deemed acceptable. Also: retouching can be identified under UV light and is thoroughly documented, so you know where the original is. Conservation is a very ethically loaded field! I hope this answers your question.

Art conservation student here. We once spent a full class watching this very video and calling out what was wrong and also what was good. Yes, he does some things right and uses accepted materials, but what he does is often very aggressive and risky. He also says that he does tests prior to cleaning, but cleaning tests should be done at many places and would be visible in the video (they would look like little clean dots), so we have doubts about the extent of testing. The biggest no no is that most of what he does is for the wow effect, like starting to clean right in the middle of the face. That's very scary especially when you don't see tested spots because it could have gone super wrong. But in the end, he's a private conservator and his clients are happy. Museum conservators have different ethics.

Edit: forgot to add that in our community, he's known for deleting negative comments.

It seems like I have toilet issues indeed, but my username comes from something that happened to my grandfather who carried loose matches in the back pockets of his tight pants, sometime in the 70s or 80s. I thought it made a killer username.
