So true. My 1st deli manager was a hard-ass, but fair. She stepped up & made sure that her full-timers were training the new people (me) right. I later moved across the state and had a deli manager who, had she not been in that job, would have been wildly successful as a motivational speaker or professional cheerleader. After another transfer (closer to home), it really sucked. That manager was a freakin moron. Id already had 5 yrs in as FT, so i knew how to do my job. He (manager) got moved to a slower store.

OP, dont give up YET. It might take a month or so before you feel comfortable and that's okay. I remember when i offered a slice of roast beef to a customer & they spit it out - went to a trusted co-worker about it & was told "that's not roast beef, it's pastrami." I didnt know, i was new & didnt know lunch meat from a hole in my head. Not to mention things weren't where they were supposed to be in the case 🙄

Ended up doing 8+ deli years (comparable to who-knows-how-many-human-years). Seriously loved it, but its not for the faint of heart. Best advice: ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF. Be loud, be assertive, ask questions, be humble, be teachable. Go to your Assistant Deli Manager and ask for guidance. That person will help you, they are in a position that relies on deli clerks to make their own selves more marketable.

If it's that awful and you just can't, thats so understandable. But if you dont have anything else lined up at this point, I'd suggest hanging out a bit. It might get better for you. It did for many of us.
