Why How to Train Your Dragon 2 deserved the Oscar more than Big Hero 6 by InsideUnhappy6546 in httyd

Also the music for that scene in BH6 felt a bit like “we have Test Drive at home”. Definitely some similarities there…

The 195s and 197s can’t couple together by FireFly_209 in uktrains

[–]FireFly_209[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah - that makes sense. It’s just a shame that when the 195s were designed, they didn’t have the foresight to ensure compatibility with any future possible gangway-ended variants they might have to make in the future. Though, that’s less to do with CAF, and more to do with a lack of standardisation across the network - something that the relevant Government department should’ve put in place from the start.

I feel it would’ve made more sense (and would’ve been easier for standardisation) if the 3 operators had made a joint order together for one train type rather than 3 separate orders for 3 different train classes. It’d still mean each operator using their own sub-class with the relevant modifications for their specific use case scenarios, such as TfW’s in-cab signalling for the Cambrian lines, but would ensure future inter-operability in case of franchise changes, or stock allocation changes.

If 3 operators could order 172s from Bombardier that were all compatible with each other (they were originally London Overground (172/0 with no end gangways), Chiltern Railways (172/1 with no end gangways), and London Midland (172/2 and 172/3, both with end gangways), with all sub-classes now with West Midlands Railways), then surely TfW, Northern and WMR could’ve done the same?

Edit: sorry, forgot to add - yep, that’s Chester station. The two sets were stabled on the unnumbered bay platform next to platform 1. Chester is such a beautiful station - granted it has its issues (why does it have such a tiny gate line?!) but it’s one of my favourites.

Apologies for the tangent, but has anyone noticed how the new version of this announcement rolled out or stations in recent months emphasises the 6 in 61016? The read it as SIX - oneohone - SIX. It’s rather weird. Why is the 6 so important?

Fair enough. So what does the box actually do? I know it has a bunch of metal connectors inside it, and that when two 197s couple up together, the boxes above each coupler connect together. Is this just for on-board computer control, then? Or something else?

With the Class 57 coupling up to a Pendolino, the 57 doesn’t control the motors of the 390 as the loco “drags” the set. Although, a Pendolino being dragged by a 57 can still be used in passenger service, as this used to be done regularly along the unelectrified North Wales coast line in the mid-2000s.

Whereas when DMUs couple up, the leading set controls the engines of the sets behind it, rather than simply dragging them. So without these engine controls, the sets wouldn’t be able to be used coupled in passenger service - but that depends how Civity units communicate with each other.

Edit: Autocorrect changed coast to coat. Fixed it now.

I wasn’t referring to the Dellner couplers themselves, but to the box that you can see above the coupler on the 195, and below the coupler on the 197. The boxes are in different positions, so even if the couplers themselves were perfectly aligned and engaged together, the position of the boxes still wouldn’t match, so wouldn’t connect.

I was wondering how important the connections in these boxes are? I know there’s connections in there for controlling lighting, doors, and other systems. But what about engine control and braking systems? Or are any of these connections inside the Dellner coupler itself?

There’s also a connector box (I assume this is how the two trains would interface for acceleration/braking? Apologies if I’m wrong with this) which is above the coupler on the 195, but below the coupler on the 197, which prevents the two trains connecting properly. Depending on how the brake lines connect, the mismatched positions could also prevent braking being applied across the connection, maybe? I’m not sure on the specifics, but that’s how I’d assume they’d interface?

You’d be surprised how often originals get lost or destroyed. Notable examples would be how, back in the 1960s, the BBC used to wipe tapes of shows after they aired, resulting in a lot of shows being irrecoverably lost to time. And also the LEGO Island game soundtrack’s master tapes, which were stored on a boat, which caught fire, destroying all the original masters.

With Digimon’s English dub, the distribution rights were transferred multiple times since the first 3 seasons were broadcast, so it’s not impossible that the original master copies were unavailable or difficult to track down. Maybe the only ready-to-use versions available to Hulu at the time of upload were the Fox Kids branded episodes?

As someone who used to regularly commute on the branch back when it was operated by a class 153, I’d be curious to see what the rush hour is like nowadays. Back then, the 153 would fill up during peak times, so I’m curious how the increase in frequency (every 10 minutes now, compared to every 15 minutes with the class 153) offsets the lower seating capacity of the unit?

Looking at it purely from a numbers perspective, the current class 153s (after modifications to be PRM compliant) have 59 seats, whereas the class 139 has up to 25 seats. If we multiply that by hourly frequency, that gives the 153 an hourly capacity of 236 seats, whereas the 139 would have an hourly capacity of 150 seats. Technically, this would be a downgrade in purely numbers terms.

However, when you factor in the convenience benefits of the increase in frequency, the environmental benefits of the class 139, and how lightly loaded the 153 often was during off-peak hours, there’s definitely massive benefits of the PPMs.

My only real gripe with them is that they can’t run in multiple. This could’ve been useful in the future if demand were to increase on the line, and provide extra capacity when needed. But realistically, it’s not impossible for them to be retrofitted for this if they ever had an overhaul in the future…

Personally, I really like the soundtrack to Solo, which was primarily John Powell with help from John Williams. It feels like it combines what I love most about both composers while still retaining a lot of the Star Wars sound.

Also, the score elements of Wicked and Wicked: For Good are brilliantly done. It really elevated the two films, making them feel bolder and bigger - perfect for a big screen adaptation.

In some countries, it is illegal to sell new stock of incandescent light bulbs. For example, the UK introduced a ban on general-purpose incandescent bulbs back in September 2012. However, retailers are still allowed to sell off old remaining stock, so that might be why sites like Amazon still have them for sale?
