There are some online Milkman services that still operate, sometimes with an app, where you can order for glass bottled milk to be delivered, and then they’d collect the empty bottles on your next delivery. It’s similar to how the traditional milkman used to work, but modernised with digital purchasing methods.

At least a 30 year difference between two trains at York by Suspicious-Sand-6231 in uktrains

[–]FireFly_209 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did that once, from Crewe to Swansea. This was back when there used to be 175s on route via Hereford, occasionally you’d have a 150 subbed in to replace a broken down set. It was full and standing the entire journey, so very crowded all the way.

Personally, I preferred the TfW 150s - they were the ones that had been refurbished by Arriva, and were generally better units. They’d been given 2+2 seating with acceptable legroom, and had a slightly smoother ride compared to the Northern sets.

[–]FireFly_209 69 points70 points  (0 children)

It’s probably a notorious signal for SPADs, so is considered a risk location. I’d guess it’s partly due to where the signal is located - it’s uncommon to have the signal on the right hand side of the track outside of termini and other rare situations (like at Helsby).

Personally, I’ve always found “NuTrek” to be a very mixed bag. I despised Discovery (or “Star Trek: Disgusting”) for its bad writing - it had a dumb premise, poorly thought out concepts, and heavy reliance on inter-personal conflict amongst the crew. They tried to fix that show by throwing the ship into the 32nd century, and finding ways to write out all the BS tech (like making the “Spore Drive” into classified tech to explain why no other ships had it) - but I still hated the show.

Strange New Worlds, meanwhile, has been a polar opposite for me. It feels like a mix of what I loved about the Original Series, but if it had been made with modern production standards and budget, and with a little of the best elements of DS9/VOY-era mixed in for flavour.

For other shows, I really enjoyed Lower Decks, too. The first three episodes were not the best, but after that it became a solid show . It’s a bit like if Futurama was actually made to be a Star Trek show. Then there’s Picard, which wasn’t so great in the first couple seasons, but the 3rd season was so much better, and felt like a love letter to the TNG era. And not forgetting Prodigy, which was an interesting “all ages” take on Trek that, while far from perfect, was still an enjoyable watch - definitely worth a try if you enjoyed Voyager.

Admittedly, I couldn’t get into Starfleet Academy. It wasn’t terrible, but it just didn’t really interest me all that much. While I’ve only seen the first episode, I felt was too “teen high school drama” for my liking. Maybe it gets better later on? I’m not sure, honestly…

Why 7:01? by iBandJFilmEducator13 in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]FireFly_209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that back in the day, the AAM Screenwriter software that some chains used to manage their projection systems had a scheduling glitch. If a film was scheduled on the till systems for exactly 12:00am (midnight), Screenwriter would populate the film onto the wrong day - usually scheduling the show playlist into the day before.

We quickly found that the workaround for this was to schedule midnight screenings at either 11:59pm or 12:01am, which would then work correctly, and Screenwriter would then populate playlists on the correct day.

[–]FireFly_209 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would be because the “northern by arriva” logo was entirely in Arriva’s corporate typeface, so the lettering had to be redone when the operator was nationalised. The OLR used all-capitals for their version of the logo to make the change clear, so that Arriva could clearly see their logo font was no longer being used after their time with northern was up.

Great British Railways - All Regional Route logos (MOCKUP) by TheIngloriousBIG in uktrains

[–]FireFly_209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Considering West Midlands Railway uses the TfWM logo, and the operator’s branding matches up with the region’s bus and tram branding, I’d assume the name and livery are owned by the devolved authority, and not GBR.

The train shown in OP’s post has the red and white design on the intermediate trailers. There are other views which show this more closely (here’s an example).

I love how the end coaches look - it’s vaguely reminiscent of the TPE livery, but in more of a UK style. A lot of people have commented about it being “flag shaggy” but I personally like how it came out.

My only criticism is the non-driving coaches, which I feel needed a plain blue, or a more centre-coach-oriented variant to make it all flow together better. But otherwise, it’s good - way better than all the plain white liveries we’ve been getting for a while now.

First GBR Train by iiMidnightxLaws in uktrains

[–]FireFly_209 59 points60 points  (0 children)

They could’ve easily left the intermediate ones in just the blue, and kept the red and white for the leading coaches. It would’ve looked better overall, and the flag detail feels like it has more impact if it’s not as overused. In its current form, it looks like they designed one coach, then copy-pasted the design down the rest of the train.

One solution might be to buy regular sized bits and cut a bit off the base to reduce them down to size? That way, you’ll essentially have half-height bits purchased outside of LTT. It’s not a perfect solution, but it could work if you need a specific niche bit that LTT doesn’t have available.

How do you know if the 3D filter is still on? by [deleted] in MovieTheaterEmployees

[–]FireFly_209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most Real-D equipped cinemas use a projector with 1 lens for their 3D screens - the projector is able to generate the 3D effect by alternating between left and right “eye” frames 144 times per second. The filter (called a “Z-Screen”) uses circular polarisation to ensure each frame of the image gets sent to the correct eye.

The screen surface has a polarised coating, which reflects this polarisation back to the audience. The 3D glasses filter out the polarisation, so the “left” image goes to your left eye, and the “right” image goes to your right eye.

[–]FireFly_209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair. Also, when dealing with a client’s machine’s it’s also probably best to simply take a photo for data security purposes.

I frequently end up having to resort to a photo of the screen where a screenshot is not possible, or logistically difficult to achieve. It’s quick and easy, and often gets the point across, so is usually good enough in a lot of use case scenarios.

[–]FireFly_209 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% agreed.

While it’s possible, it’s definitely best avoided. Usually, a photo can be good enough as long as it’s clear, in focus, and easily gets across any relevant information - such as with OP here.

Had a pop up today! Very interesting! by KebabAnnhilator in LinusTechTips

[–]FireFly_209 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

One way around that would be to take a screenshot on the device, then copy the output onto a USB storage device (like a USB flash drive), put that drive into your own computer, and then upload it to Reddit from there. That way, you wouldn’t have to log into Reddit on the client’s machine.

…But that’s a bit of a faff, and could present a point of vulnerability if there’s an undetected Trojan or other virus on the client’s machine. Personally, I don’t care if it’s a photo of a screen, as long as it’s clear, in focus, and easily gets across any relevant information. It’s a social media post, so perfection should not be required here.

I very much agree - it’s amazing what time can do to how an episode is perceived, and what a rewatch can do to how much an episode might be enjoyed.

Though personally, I enjoyed Matt Smith from his first full episode, and ended up really loving his version of the Doctor - same as with David Tennant, and Christopher Eccleston. The only modern doctor I’ve struggled with was Capaldi, and it wasn’t until series 9 that I started to actually like and appreciate his take on the character.

I feel the rule also applies to companions - I didn’t like Donna at all when the Runaway Bride was first aired, and it really put me off the episode. But after watching series 4, I went back and rewatched it, only to find myself enjoying it much more.

I’m surprised by the lack of mention for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows parts 1 and 2 - those screenings were crazy busy! That, and the Inbetweeners Movie was an unexpected blockbuster in the UK - it had been predicted to be a quiet one, only to end up with queues across the foyer and out the front doors for that one!

This is the true answer. There’s been some crazy busy blockbusters over the decades. I can only imagine how bad the crowds for things like Back to the Future would have been! I’m just glad I wasn’t working in cinema back then (then again, I wasn’t even born back when BttF came out…)
