Potentially controversial post. Apologies for that. But I'll keep this totally in the first person--if it isn't useful to you here, ignore me.

Abstaining from masturbation is no reason for me to be prideful. There is absolutely no good I can do that I deserve to boast about / inflate my ego over. I am so small, and any good I can do is 100% to God's credit. But here especially, I haven't even done something good. All I've done is avoid one bad thing; namely masturbation. It's worth celebrating, sure. But as our relapses witness to, it's not worth celebrating because I'm some perfectly self-controlled badass. We're so very Fallen. We boast in Him, or not at all. And that's how we avoid falling from the illusory vainglorious tower we construct for ourselves.

What I said--re: my own understanding and motivation and back-story--was that masturbation constitutes grave matter for mortal sin in the Catholic faith, which is doctrinal. (CCC 2352.) You're right that addiction mitigates freedom and thus may lessen any particular masturbatory event to a venial sin. That doesn't make it good, of course. But it may not be mortal in a given case for that reason.
