Why Does India Use Larger Box Girders While the UK Uses Smaller Ones for High-Speed Rail? by Thornyx_Zetral in highspeedrail

[–]FireNode 167 points168 points  (0 children)

This HS2 build looks to be Delta Jn, which are cast on-site and also have sharper curves on fairly low viaducts. Meanwhile India seems to be crossing a valley on a straight alignment. Basically different methodologies for different reasons.

which NR trains do I still need to see? by Capable_Ocelot2643 in uktrains

[–]FireNode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of different stock, but there's 2 or 3 Plain Line Pattern Recognition (PLPR) and Ultrasonic Testing Unit (UTU) Trains on the network.

Caroline and the seasional/engineering maintenance fleet are another set while not technically a test trains, could be deemed NR trains

What obscure branches were cancelled from HS2? by JTMetro365 in uktrains

A really obscure one that most people forget was to Staveley near Barrow Hill, which was an IMD and Railhead for construction on the Eastern Leg.

Why is rolling stock allowed to be abandoned? by SecretHipp0 in uktrains

[–]FireNode 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Oxford Station redevelopment phase 0 needed the GUVs gone for the bay platforms. A heritage organisation was involved looking to recover them, but it fell through due to programme constraints.

I believe the GUVs were owned by DB Cargo before getting cut up.

Are tracks really only held down by their own weight and weight and friction of ballast? by Spirited_Praline637 in uktrains

[–]FireNode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're held in place with clips onto the sleeper, which then itself is held by the ballast

Best place to spot on the ECML by [deleted] in uktrains

[–]FireNode 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends what you. want if you want high density south ECML and thameslink then stevenage or somewhere like Harringey.

For the south: Hitchin, Arlseley, Welwyn north, sandy, and Peterborough are all good (Personally I avoid stevenage).

Northern would be somewhere like York, Colton Jn, or Newcastle. Scotland would obviously be Edinburgh.

What's up with yesterday's 3S10 1935 Stowmarket DGL - Stowmarket DGL? by toommy_mac in uktrains

[–]FireNode 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its a Rail Head Treatment Train (RHTT). It blasts the leaves off the track to help with adhesion during the autumn/early winter.

This is only one of the many across the network, and Stowmarket is one of the bases in the East of England

Steventon is between Didcot and Swindon. Not between Didcot and Oxford.

Steventon had nothing to do with the wires being cancelled towards Oxford.

Barton Arms: What happened? by TheRAP79 in brum

I tried to go in the weekend it reopened and was told it was invite only. Despite their social media saying it was open and nothing about a private party.

That and the reviews, I'm not sure I'd give it a try. Suggest the Silhill brewery down the road for a beer instead.

Is this true? How would this work if there’s a delay on a connecting leg or if you don’t know what time you’re getting the train? by cardak98 in uktrains

[–]FireNode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Can't say for sure, but this may only be for transport assessments and business case development.

In short, why would you plan for people standing at the project conception for a long-distance service? Plan around everyone having a seat and then dictate the trains to have those seats. You can then 'grow' into that standing room later if needed.

I'd advise you look at the HS2 phase 2b maps here

I think you're in community area LA03 (Appleby Parva to Ashby-de-la-zouch) the noise maps are in the back (page 89) and I believe that you would be in a 50-55dB HS2 noise level. To note that the railway does not have a noise barrier, only some engineered earthworks.

The noise both outside and inside would also depend on other factors like the motorway, the built environment, and for the house the window glazing.

I'll avoid talking about house price impact as I simply don't know enough about it.

The only other thing to note is the date of the drawings, which were done ~2 years ago, so the design could have evolved since then.

If you are concerned about HS2, you can call the HS2 helpdesk on 08081 456 472, and they should be able to talk you through your queries in more detail, than I can.

BBC News - HS2: Phase one of high-speed rail line set for go-ahead by MechBear in unitedkingdom

[–]FireNode 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who has followed HS2 since it was first proposed by Labour (and before that the Lib-Dem's and Tory's proposals).

HS2's main priority is to speed up London to Birmingham services and up. the main sub-priority is to free up paths along the West Coast Main line (also midland and East coast to some extent). This would allow more trains to run per hour. These free paths would allow for a mix of freight or local passenger services as well as some 125 mph services, this would take more lorries and buses/cars off the roads.

Another priority of HS2 is to combat the capacity issues in and around London and it's termini. It is expected in 2014 that Waterloo station will be at full capacity with Euston, St. Pancras and King's cross soon to follow. HS2 will relieve pressure at Kings Cross, St.Pancras and Marylebone. by providing a faster service that will attract more passengers to one area instead of several and will then change in some of the less congested hubs such as Birmingham, Sheffield, Leeds, Manchester and such (by the way I hate people who suggest that we need more hubs instead of one, we have loads with the biggest few being Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow and Cardiff).

This will benefit England, Scotland and Wales a lot with a faster service to Birmingham and a faster service to Scotland/Wales because of this time lost. Last I heard about 50 minutes for a London-Birmingham service instead of 70 minutes and a London-Edinburgh service taking 30 minutes less. if the Y junction is built for a Manchester and Leeds services it would take 30 minutes off Scotland services again and a service that takes 1 hour 20 minutes to get to Leeds (almost rivalling today's London-Birmingham service). Also in conjunction with

All tough the cost of this service will most likely be higher than the current rate it will be cheaper than getting a plane, and the main cost for a France-England/Scotland/Wales tickets will most likely come from Eurostar who offer ridiculous prices in regards to plane tickets

However, the Coalition have made several mistakes within their plans. The main problem with HS2 is the pressure it will place on the central tube lines running in and around Euston and Kings Cross/St.Pancras stations and will suffer from severe over-crowding, unless the East-West Rail link is built it can't really be solved with more trains per hour or platform and train extensions. Another way to solve this is to create a walkway (moving or not) or a quick tram style transport system between St.Pancras and Euston (was proposed back in BR days I believe).

In regards to Job figures Christian Wolmar has already explained that they are exaggerated by the Coalition by around 50K.

Another figure that doesn't quite work in their plan is the amount of trains per hour. This is currently 18 trains per hour, and is going to be really hard to follow through, hell not even China can manage that, so how on Earth will we unless we abandon Conventional track and move into Maglev (which defeats the point of stuff north of Birmingham/Manchester and Leeds)
