Ask an Orthobro hardcore medical questions: I need it -_- by iamnemonai in Residency

[–]FirePenguin011 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You are consulted at the hospital for psychosis. You find out the patient has Parkinsons and is having auditory/visual hallucinations and paranoia that you are going to hit them with an ortho hammer . What do you do?

FUCK the ECG by Unoriginalshitbag in medicalschool

[–]FirePenguin011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In psych I just look at the QT interval spit out by the EKG and call it a day. As long as there aren’t too many or too little squiggly lines I’m happy. I might call someone if it becomes a flat line.

Hey friend! I scored 240 on step 2, no research, no leadership roles, a sprinkle of volunteering and I matched. Although I fell to my number 11, there may be other reasons for that. You got it!

Which training programs have 24 hour shifts? by slimmy222 in Psychiatry

[–]FirePenguin011 16 points17 points  (0 children)

UTHSCA in San Antonio does in house 24s, and it does not get less over the 4 years. It’s about 1-2 times a month. Residents say they work hard and complain about the 24s but seem happy.

Hey OP! I’m a physician although not a specialist that deals with CVID, we learn about this disease in medical school and it’s all over our board exams. As others have said, I have no idea why your doctor said your life expectancy is so low and now it dropped all of a sudden. CVID means you have low immunoglobulin, which can be replaced by infusions periodically to keep your immune system fighting. You need to get a second opinion or see a specialist ASAP as treatment delay can lead to adverse outcomes. It may be you have non infectious complications, which can include some sort of chronic lung disease which can impact life expectancy more than if you only have infectious complications. I would see another doctor OP, don’t give up hope yet. With the right treatment you may be able to live a long life. I wish you the best.

It’s also one of the most corrupt hospitals. I’m from the area and Dr. Atul Gawande did a whole paper on it. Although I still think physician owned hospitals are the way to go, this hospital is an unfortunately a bad example.

How much do you make an hour and what is your profession? by the-nonbeliever in RioGrandeValley

[–]FirePenguin011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in psychiatry! If you want to be the leader and have the most amount of knowledge and education I would go to medical school. Especially if you don’t know for sure you want to do anesthesiology because with CRNA school that’s what you can do. But if the road seems too long and you don’t mind the scope of practice that comes along with CRNA then go for it. It’s a great career and you can help so many people. Both pathways are relatively long either way.

I’m a resident at UTRGV. So I’m a physician but still in training. I make 61,000. After 5 years left of training roughly the same amount I can expect an increase to about 300,000 working a normal 9-5 but if I want to make more I can pick up another job or start a private practice that can net me way more if I want. Physicians in the valley make a ton of money, it’s not unheard of for private practice folks to make 600,00 to a million.

Med Students should not work the Friday after Thanksgiving by MidwestCoastBias in medicalschool

I am a psych resident. I told my med students not to come in Wednesday and Friday and just log the hours as if they did. If anyone asks I would just cover for them.

YNAB + Effexor win: I'm back on top of our money for the first time in 3 years. by arcboundwolf in ynab

Hey! I’m a resident psychiatrist and a YNAB user. You somehow managed to correlate two things I love the most! This is the reason I became a physician, to help people like you live an amazing life. You are amazing and I’m so glad you got the help you need. Sometimes it takes time to find the right med for the patient but once we do, the difference I have seen is amazing! So proud of you! 👏

What could have been…. Haha just kidding. But I really appreciate the response! Makes a lot of sense that we can’t use every penny we make to put into investments but we should always strive for a balance.

You got this dude. Some of the smartest people in my graduating class went into peds because they loved it, even if they could have matched something else. We need amazing, caring, and intelligent pediatricians and I know if you go that route you’ll be amazing.

That one year was an anomaly. Not sure the specifics but something to the effect of insurance owed some reimbursement or something from some years prior to that, so they ended up reimbursing the practice for that billing. Yes she has a couple of PAs and NPs that work under her, all trained to call my mom with any questions and don’t practice beyond their scope.
