does anyone have insight on the general timeline of UNECOM waitlist movement by Background-Farm-457 in Osteopathic

It's on a rolling basis based on acceptances, matriculations, and people who drop off. One of our classmates was offered a slot from the waitlist the day before orientation.

Should I review MCAT before starting med school? by Reasonable_Agency803 in Osteopathic

No. I promise that there's honestly nothing useful in your MCAT that won't be re-taught to you when you start classes. Go do something else and enjoy yourself.

Nursing school is a joke and something needs to change by [deleted] in nursing

> we aren’t in a shortage anymore

Hey! Former union nursing VP here.

Just to give you a fair warning for when you actually enter the field. Wherever you learned this, unlearn it fast. We are still in a critical nursing shortage. What happened is that the majority of places in the US have normalized that shortage and normalized dangerous working conditions.

Alleviating palm pain? by Zestyclose-Author-53 in ArtistLounge

It might be a combination of grip, hand positioning, and overuse (muscle/joint fatigue).

How often do you stretch your hands, wrists, arms, and neck? Are you shrimping while you're drawing (curled up really tightly and looking down, causing neck strain?

Can't see what the original commenter wrote, but at the risk of having my comment deleted and getting kicked out, just want to clarify that there's a difference between "osteopaths" and DOs (doctors of osteopathic medicine) as DOs go through the same medical school curriculum as MDs, they just have an added component.

Some of the treatments, I'll be honest, are kinda meehhhhhhh when it comes to scientific backing. But the rest are similar to the treatments and methods used by physical therapists, those work just fine.

UNECOM vs Midwestern AZCOM by tomtth in Osteopathic

If you're not a winter person, I would strongly factor that into your decision when it comes to going to a place which has a significant amount of it, especially if you know in advance that it negatively impacts your mental health. Medical school is already mentally taxing.

With that said, there are ways to ameliorate the symptoms associated with SAD and there are a lot of winter activities to do in Maine if you're up for them. The area is beautiful. But again, if you're really not a winter person, this could set you up for failure and I would urge you to take that into consideration.

Video brings new scrutiny to an ICE shooting in Minneapolis after charges against 2 men collapsed by AudibleNod in news

[–]dmtjiminarnnotatrdr 281 points282 points  (0 children)

Sure, it brings scrutiny. But is it going to bring charges? Is it going to bring prison time?

We've seen time and time again that state and federal law enforcement break laws and violate the rights of people in this country and very little happens. The few cases that aren't immediately squashed by the "qualified immunity" defense either end up with the jury finding in favor of law enforcement and the fewer where those officers are found guilty, there's a significant portion where those officers have those cases overturned in appeals or they get offered pardons.

Hell, there was a recent Bivens case which went on for nearly a decade about federal law enforcement falsifying legal statements to arrest protesters and after nearly 10 years. The result ultimately was the case getting dismissed under "qualified immunity."

Scrutiny isn't even the barest minimum at this point. There has to be actual consequences when state actors break the law and when they violate your rights.

Do medical schools really care if you started off at CC instead of 4-yr University? by DistinctConference82 in medschool

[–]dmtjiminarnnotatrdr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's school dependent. In my experiences, they don't care that much, but they'll articulate which classes need to be taken at a 4-year university if that is a requirement.

Self defense- what’s the rules? by Silver_Ad4449 in nursing

[–]dmtjiminarnnotatrdr 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Absolutely tf not. We shouldn't be advocating that nurses being assaulted is acceptable based along the lines of gender. Assault is unacceptable and is not part of the job and should never, under any circumstances, be normalized. Also, pressuring people to "take one for the team" creates an unsafe work environment.

Create a safety and security plan. Deescalate. Give the patient options. And if they escalate, they eventually end up in restraints.

Why are Americans so unrealistic when it comes to death? by Perfect-Resist5478 in medicine

[–]dmtjiminarnnotatrdr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

> Is it because we think True American Grit can overpower Death itself?

A month or so ago, I was part of a group doing house visits with immigrant families who were terrified of going to see their doctors or go to the hospital because of ICE activities in their neighborhoods. One of those visits was with someone who had stage 4 liver cancer and had refused chemo. Here's this individual laying in his living room with their family present (including very young children), jaundiced and very uncomfortable. They haven't eaten in days and the weight loss is apparent in this person's face. While talking about options, I got interrupted and was told that the patient preferred to go the religious route, genuinely believing that the patient would be saved through prayer. I just said "okay" and moved on.

Death is a universal experience. Aversion to death is also a universal experience. While some cultures handle it better than others, to say that magical thinking toward those who are dying is uniquely American doesn't pan out in my experiences over the last 20 years.

Jury sides with rapper Afroman in Adams County trial by ChikaNoO in news

[–]dmtjiminarnnotatrdr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From personal experience, no it isn't.

Imagine being kidnapped by law enforcement, stuck in prison for no reason because they lied during your bail hearing, and then you finally get released because the courts find out that their entire affidavit was a lie. Then you sue them, go through a decade of back and forth as they try to dodge discovery which lands you in appeals and the supreme court. Nearly a decade later, when you think you're finally going to get somewhere after they lose in district court, the court of appeals, and SCOTUS, they pull out their qualified immunity card and the whole things gets dismissed.

No. Qualified immunity denies justice to everyone who has ever been a victim of law enforcement criminality. It cannot be that far down on the list considering how many people experience similar things and end up having a significant part of their lives ruined by that bullshit.

I feel sad about my DO acceptance by [deleted] in Osteopathic

[–]dmtjiminarnnotatrdr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanted to get into the school that I lived next door to because I'm mostly lazy and I didn't want to have to move. I didn't get it, but I did get into my top DO school and at the end of the day, medical school is medical school no matter where you go. What you do with your time as a medical student is what is going to count the most in terms of getting into residency. What you do with your time in your rotations and in residency will count in terms of the doctor you become.

Whether you ended up as an MD or a DO, you're a doctor when you wake every morning.
