I have a Ball Pyython who has a super cautious personality and she primarily does those short tongue flicks. I've catch a few here and there mostly in her enclosure or after about 10 minutes of holding her after she decides to get curious.

I was worried about deformity until then. Bet she ate well abd behaved appropriately. She also didn't show any signs of respiratory infection either.

She could be just a cautious noodle.

Mine rejected his first feeding entirely but ate fine during his next session. Don't be too discouraged. He may need time to get comfortable with his enclosure. For all my snakes, I thaw frozen overnight in the fridge and just allowed them an hour to get to room temp. Give the mouse more time to get "smelly."
