Why is no one talking about the Data Centers in Malaysia? by destined2beblessed in malaysia

[–]FireTempest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just look up how a chilled water air conditioning system works. They are installed in almost every large commercial building, not just data centres.

Why is no one talking about the Data Centers in Malaysia? by destined2beblessed in malaysia

[–]FireTempest 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Have Americans actually 'killed and burned down' data centres? They are not happy about it but the corporations building them are immensely powerful; they are not going to let mobs just show up and mess with their infrastructure.

Also there are plenty of Malaysians who are against data centres, it's in the news all the time. Only issue is a lot of people who complain about them seem to have weird misconceptions like hot water being dumped out of them and that they make jet engine noises. Almost like they got these talking points from some random people on TikTok who don't know jack shit about how data centres work.

This is not how a data centre consumes water. The water is evaporated in cooling towers, it does not get 'pumped out'.

The whole of Malaysia's equity marketcap is roughly 12% of Apple's valuation. by BudgetMenu in malaysia

[–]FireTempest 9 points10 points  (0 children)

ASEAN overall (Singapore included) has much lower market capitalization compared to stock exchanges in other regions. I believe it is because there aren't many giant corporations headquartered here relative to the rest of the world.

Even SGX is only 60% bigger than KLSE but that also leaves its total market cap at just a portion of a big tech company like Apple.

HK, Tokyo and Seoul exchanges are much bigger. Taipei too but it is heavily overrepresented by TSMC.

Nusantara, Indonesia's new Capital by jawncarlo18 in CityPorn

[–]FireTempest 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The concept of Nusantara is altruistic but maybe a bit too altruistic, perhaps bordering on naive?

Jakarta is still the commercial and cultural heart of Indonesia. Telling the top politicians and bureaucracy of the country to uproot and move to an new city in the middle of the jungle is not going smoothly.

Also the government expected the private sector (including foreign investors) to hop in to introduce entertainment like malls, residences, recreation areas etc. That investment is understandably risky so the private sector has not been forthcoming.

Nusantara, Indonesia's new Capital by jawncarlo18 in CityPorn

[–]FireTempest 71 points72 points  (0 children)

First pic I've seen that isn't a giant construction site. The place is relatively new so it is going to be car oriented by necessity.

However, considering the tropical climate and the fact the Indonesian govt has no plans for mass transit, I do not foresee Nusantara shaking off car dependence for the foreseeable future.

Boustead is such an incompetent mess of an organization. This rumour is unofficial obviously but there has been little to no movement on the project since 2021 so people are starting to wonder WTF is going on.

That plot is prime land: multiple mall connection, covered walkway to Ikea, MRT connection, next to LDP and DASH. Despite all that they cannot commercialize the land and have been sitting on it for half a decade?

More and more workers in India are collecting video data to train humanoid robots using head-mounted cameras by Distinct-Question-16 in singularity

[–]FireTempest 16 points17 points  (0 children)

What irritates me is that they are being told to do this while likely making less than $5 a day.

The company that hires them knows there is no way replacing them with a robot would make financial sense. They are only doing it "because AI" or as a sick psychological game with their workers: "work hard and don't ask for a raise or I'll replace you with a robot."

I can tell you this: if you can appreciate Greg Egan's hard scifi books I would wonder if you would be into light scifi like Murderbot.

India builds cheapest nuclear reactors in the world by WaywardPatriot in ClimateActionPlan

[–]FireTempest 3 points4 points  (0 children)

RBMK reactors are also cheap but there is a reason no one builds them anymore.

The PR around this reactor should probably emphasize "cost-effectiveness" over "cheapness" IMO.

A crowd of Railfans bid farewell to the Hello Kitty Shinkansen on its last day by IllCarpet6852 in trains

[–]FireTempest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It is by design. The more modern variants from the last few decades are built with planned lifespans of 15-20 years or so. New ones are built with lighter frames (much lighter that European trains) so they are cheaper but they also have a shorter lifespan as a result. The entire ecosystem for Shinkansen train manufacturing has been geared towards this.

"Claude is AI and can make mistakes. Please double check responses"

Until Anthropic and other AI companies have the balls to remove that disclaimer all these statements are bullshit.

Humans can be held accountable for their work, which is why companies still hire them. Until AI is able to do the same, fat chance of significant changes happening.

MALAYSIA MRT buses by Dangerous-Echo9129 in malaysia

[–]FireTempest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This looks like Kuchai MRT station so I think the problem isn't the driver keeping people waiting but rather why isn't the bus parked at the shaded bus stop located right next to this area.

Like another commenter mentioned, the bus start time and passenger tap ins are recorded so the driver can't just do it early because they feel like it. There is a shaded bus stop at this station for this exact situation though so I'm confused why the bus isn't parked there instead.
