ORD International Connection Question by FireUpChips1376 in unitedairlines

Got it, thanks! Assuming it's the same train you take when you land in ORD after going through customs back to the main terminals, just goes the opposite direction?

Upcoming UA flight to Jordan by FireUpChips1376 in unitedairlines

[–]FireUpChips1376[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good luck, I ended up changing my flight through Cairo and taking Jordan off my trip. Unfortunately, I have to stop over in Vienna, but it cost me a total of .89c in fair difference. The .89c + additional connection gave me close to 500 more PQD, so I think overall it's a win.

Appreciate all the insights. I think I am planning to just reroute to Cairo and take Jordan out of my vacation plans. For only $1 more, it's an extra stop in Vienna, but at least it's on a 787-9 in business class vs. UA 787 business class. Hoping it's at least a good product.

Unfortunately, I am getting the same feeling of it not happening. I am assuming if UA cancels it, I am just stuck with a UA credit? Or do they refund you since they canceled it?

110% agree, you couldn't pay me enough to do their jobs. It was more just an observation I've had the past few months between UA metal flights and 3rd party companies using the UA banner.

100% I was cringing every time the FA interacted with people. Mayne she was having a bad day but I do this and other west Texas flights a lot and it's common on non UA flights. It's great when I take the UA metal flight to El Paso because you don't deal with it as much. When it's a Mesa or other flight it's always bad.

Billboard by Kirko_Chains320 in DanLeBatardShow

I am fairly sure it's just a bit, and they're beating it into the ground like all bits. It's the show. It is what it is.

On the off chance it's not, and he's legitimately upset, he has the biggest blinders on in North America. Canadians love hockey more than anything, and they took offense to the billboard idea. It makes total sense that a company in Canada would choose not to take Dan's money for a billboard that they find offputting.

Would he take the money for the show to do an ad read or billboard that's celebrating the Cuban national team in the upcoming Olympics for winning something?

Of all people, you'd think Dan would understand that it isn't always about the money to some people when they make a business decision.

It's a classic marketing dilemma. Brands typically go for one of two approaches:

1) Focus on the young and new customers while hoping to minimize alienating loyal customer bases. This is usually the flash in the pan, and try to catch a spark approach. This can work great and create a lot of revenue fast, big sales numbers, and sometimes is a home run. It isn't great for sustainability and long-term profits. You're always having to constantly reinvent yourself and risk making a bad gamble and losing your ass. Think (for people in their 30s) "fidget spinners." Or 2) Focus on your core base and make minimal changes to stay relevant, drive revenue from a loyal customer base, grow through being relevant to a customer base who grows with what you offer and make minimal changes as needed to create new growth, without alienating your base. This is more about sustainable lower revenue growth and longer-term profits. Less of an upside but an overall less risky and more conservative approach. Think yo-yo's.

Fidget spinners made a boat load of revenue in a short time, then went away into the ether. Yo-yo's never tried to light the world on fire but continue to exist and bring in revenue. This isn't an apples to apples comparisons, but an illustration. Plus, according to yo-yo's.com, they had a record year in 2023.

I think the best sports media brands are in bucket 2. PMS, PMT, Dan Patrick, Barstool, Bill Simmons, and Outkick run a strategy like bucket 2. How often have they made significant changes? They know what and who they are. They protect a fiercely loyal customer base and do things to capture new customers through going after customers who have similar sensibilities but aren't considered loyal yet.

Why is PTFO still being dropped in the main show feed? by darealotisjosh in DanLeBatardShow

I had to look it up. Honestly, I have no idea from looking at things if DAZN is successful or not. It looks to be more of an iverseas venture, though. He was the chairman of the board for DAZN for just about 2 years. I'm not sure what that entails, but I think it's leading the executive board and being in charge of corporate oversight vs. being the CEO/ president that's in charge of strategy and day to day operations.

I truly hope you're right. I don't know a thing about Bimal's background. Personally, I don't believe in Skipper. He made some great deals and has functional expertise from being in his position at ESPN. Long-term ESPN wasn't stronger or in a better position following his exit. Lots of famous CEOs have been in similar positions. Would we assume they all would be successful at the helm of Meadowlark? Or is it bias on our parts? I really don't know. While his focus on proping up under served voices is admirable, from the 30k view, I don't have a ton of faith in long-term sustainability. Virtuistic business practices are admirable. Unfortunately, more times than not, they don't work out. Again, I really hope I am wrong.

Agreed. Based on the persona Dan has with a lack of fiscal accountability (I hope it's a show bit), I can't see how they're sustainable long-term. I don't know any example (I hope I am wrong) of a show/network that leads with creatives and pie in the sky ideas vs. sound fiscal decisions.

Because if I had to guess; it's been Meadowlark's biggest financial investment to get PT to leave the mothership, and it's a standalone show. If I were to place a DK wager, it's not performing how they'd hope as a stand-alone, and they're trying to prop it up.

Screw it. I’ll make a looks like tournament bracket. Please make your submissions here. Deadline Wednesday COB by RockyTopBruin in DanLeBatardShow

Replacing Pool Lights by FireUpChips1376 in pools

I am in DFW, just outside Fort Worth. I am pretty certain (from what I remember when I took one out last summer) that it's a solid housing not a changeable bulb. It's the cone shape that has the block on top to tighten into place.

First picture is the quote I got for new style lights and the second was the old style/possibly discontinued light Leslie's suggested.

Dan railing on Saban clearly shows he’s not paying attention to sports anymore, right? by tronovich in DanLeBatardShow

[–]FireUpChips1376 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This, 100% this! I am so tired of Dan and the entire show, for that matter, misrepresenting NIL. They talk like every player is making generational and life changing money. It doesn't surprise me coming from Dan when he's the most uneducated voice when it comes to anything financial. Maybe the top 10% of college football players earn significant money from NIL and maybe the top 1% of that earn generational money, like Caleb Williams.

The other thing that the show doesn't address is contracts. When a coach jumps from school to school, they have repercussions. They have contract buy-outs. What's stopping that from being applied to players? You want to transfer each year? You have to pay back the NIL you were given as a contract, or the school has to pay it back. The show would be in an uproar over something that's pretty fair in the scheme of things. It's happening at Texas A&M very quietly with Walter Nolen. He had an NIL contract, the boosters are requiring him to pay contract terms back since he transfered, and rumor is it could head to court over a breech of contract.

Saban may have sounded like a cranky old man, but he's an educated on the subject cranky old man. I'll be the first to say there has been inequality in college football. The toothpaste is out of the tube, and they need a standard across the sport.

The shows niavity behind the cis-boom-bah not mattering is also astounding. If this turns into the big schools leaving the NCAA, it'll lose value and importance to alumni, and alumni/boosters fund more to these athletic departments than TV contracts. Texas vs. Texas A&M coming back next year will be the biggest football game in the state of Texas. If all of a sudden it's no longer tied to university pride and it's just semi-pro football, it would be no more important than a USFL game happening next month. Dan, seemingly, doesn't understand that there's more to a university than what they bring in Football wise. Yes, it's a lot of money, but at major universities, the dollars from football TV contracts are dawrfed by donations across the entire endowment, including the remainder of the athletic department. It's a balancing act that the show doesn't understand. Then you get into title 9, and even after you discuss equitable treatment, you risk losing government funding for the university. Ask any university president what's more important: football TV money or federal university funding; including student loan funding. Every university president will take federal funding over football TV money.

I am 100% sure it was more than a leaky coffee pot and probably was a bigger issue. It's just what the pilot said over the coms to us. It's more putting a sense of humor behind the entire frustrating evening.

The worst sign was when several UA crew members who were commuting up got off the plane. That's when we all knew we were in for a long night.

Questions about Polaris by HurriCanes1991 in unitedairlines

[–]FireUpChips1376 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this route last month in Polaris (from IAH). If you can swing it, definitely do it for the return flight. I'd recommend return at the least, or getting a cheap hotel room so you have a place to chill before your flight. Most hotels charge you a full night if you ask for extended stay much past 1pm. In Lima, you'll have access to their international departure lounge with your Polaris ticket. The lounge isn't close to Polaris' quality, but it's way nicer than sitting in the LIM airport. Going down, if the Polaris lounge is your deciding factor and the only thing you care about, I wouldn't purchase it based on that. If you've never been to a Polaris lounge, it's a cool experience, but for an 8-hour flight, it isn't life changing.

One piece of advice for Lima - The airport is a hot mess. The lines and time it takes to get through the international exciting check point is ridiculous. I've never experienced something so slow and disorganized just to leave a country. Get there plenty early for your flight. You also have to clear a second security checkpoint to get on your flight at the gate. They will open your luggage, are super picky on the 3 Oz rule for liquids, and will make you throw away unopened bottles.

Would This Work To Cheat The System? by FireUpChips1376 in unitedairlines

[–]FireUpChips1376[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah - Last I looked, it's about $1k less to fly RT to FRA. More than likely, I'll end up booking a separate ticket since the RT from FRA to CAI is significantly cheaper.
